Mollsheim is on of those pretty little Alsation villages and towns dotted around every corner of the Alsace region of France. More German than French they have a different feel to them. Vines grow everywhere and each village has its fair share of wine producers who make the most wonderful of wine. Our stop for the next two nights was going to be Camping Municipal Mollsheim. 12 euros a night WiFi for 1 euro for 90 minutes , clean and agreeable toilet blocks, fresh bread every day if ordered and close enough to the gare to get into Strasburg. This was going to be another one of those make do and mend sort of days. Not planned we just ended up here. We had never been to Strasburg and there had to be enough to do ... read more

"Tr avel makes you modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world" - Cameron Scott How true is that? When we always notice it when we arrive on French soil. Borderless Europe stretching ahead of us. Old border controls look sad and neglected these days. Having no use they have fallen into disrepair. The areas that once housed lines and lines of cars with their passengers waiting for their passports to be stamped are now makeshift and somewhat scruffy parking spots. We are now in our last week of travel. Always a difficult one where do we go? Italy is behind us and ahead Switzerland. What a contrast between two countries. Italy where life is lived in the fast lane. Where it is obligatory to wave your arms around when you speak ... read more

Travelling day today, South East to Alsace. A very pleasant drive from Verdun, mainly quite flat and very agricultural. We decided as we drove that it would be a good idea to do a few more miles today leaving less for next driving day from Alsace to Geneva. When we stopped for a break we changed our planned campsite at Ste-Marie-des-Mines to one at Eigenstein as this is a few more miles further on and also in the heart of Alsace proper. No pool, but having been lucky enough to have swum first 3 days of trip, I decided location of next stop was more important. Bob gave Clarissa Tomtom her new instructions as we ate lunch and we took a slightly different route than planned. Clarissa did argue for a while and I had to ... read more

Elsass, 24. - 26.

Strasbourg has lots of interesting things going on. The city is in France, but central in Europe and close to the borders of Germany, and Switzerland. It is the host city to the European Parliament. Many of the street signs and buildings are labelled in different languages because of the city's changing ownership between countries. Our day in Strasbourg started with a climb of the 332 steps of the Strasbourg Cathedral. It was tiring, but the view atop the heavily buttressed roof, was lovely - and worth it. We experienced the rest of the city in a new way, via a tour boat. It started in the canal in the centre of town and bought us by many buildings where historical events had happened to shape the city. The canal continued in a circle around the ... read more

The Alsace- Lorraine region is one that has changed hands between Germany and France on multiple occasions over the centuries. Many of the schools in this area are bilingual, teaching German and French as the two main languages. After seeing the beauty and character of Strasbourg and it's surroundings, it is easy to see why both countries have had such an affinity for the locale. Our day began quite early, meeting at the train station in nearby Horb am Neckar at 6:30. It was a clear blue morning with the feel of summer time heat building quickly. Our group made it on time, and so did the train. We were off on a journey that seemed would span more train switches than kilometers. Off the first train, and quickly the next arrived. As it rolled into ... read more

Orleans to Basel We had started our cycle up the Loire at Nantes with the idea of getting to Orleans and then deciding where to go next. It had been so good, we decided to go ‘ just a bit further, and then we will see’. Well, as you can see from the title, we made it to Switzerland! The Loire cycle route is part of the Eurovelo 6 cycle route, from the Atlantic to the Black Sea and from the Loire valley it follows various canals, the Canal Lateral a Loire, the Central Canal, then a number of rivers (Doubs, Saone) and finally the Rhine/Rhone Canal to Mulhouse. Mulhouse was where we started our first cycle tour, from the Swiss border down the Rhine to Amsterdam, so if we made it to Mulhouse, we would ... read more

Kehl - Strassburg, 08. - 10. ... read more

When one arrives like myself in the 3 Borders Country and one speaks about Christmas Markets, one name comes back on everyones lips, Strasbourg ! The largest, the most beautiful and famous Christmas Market of all and as I discovered while researching prior to my visit, the Capital of Christmas, nothing less ! And as I boarded a comfortable double decker grand tourism bus for the very reasonable price of only 19.00 Euros return filled with a joyous crowd of people coming from all parts of the country, I wondered if the city of Strasbourg which I was about to discover, with such a fame and reputation would live up to my expectations, and I must say it even exceeded them ! To say that I arrived on this December 05th in a city dressed up ... read more

Geo: 48.1668, 7.29891We slept late (8am), and after the best breakfast of fantastic croissants, bread and coffee, we headed off to Colmar, which is 15 minutes away. We didn't visit Colmar last time - I think we just ran out of time! I was nervous that the Christmas markets would mean huge crowds, but we quickly found a parking place near to the markets, and immersed ourselves! There were 5 or 6 different market locations, so we wandered from one to another. The products were very similar to those in Riquewihr, but it was very enjoyable. We had lunch in a cafe, where Tom and Steven had deer steak with gravy and dumplings, and I had choucroute (sauerkraut) with 5 different meats (G and M had sausages and chips!). Very good! We had hoped to catch ... read more
