We came to Alsace yesterday after a few days in Paris. Our stay there coincided with the full flowering of a cold I caught in Norway, so I was rather inactive, although I did manage to see Monet's huge, magnificent paintings of the lily ponds in his gardens at Giverny, which are hung in specially-designed rooms at the Orangerie. The building was being renovated for decades and, of the many times I've visited Paris, this is the first chance I had to see them. They probably helped me banish the cold! Today we started our hike into the Vosges. It was a comparatively easy day: about 11 km, through vineyards and then up one side of a forested hill and down the other. Tomorrow the real fun starts: the guide book says we'll be ascending 1250 ... read more

Where to begin. The day seemed like we covered much ground, but really was just in Strasbourg. Strasbourg is a unique town. Some of the people living there have had to change their nationality 4 times in their lives. These are old people. Strasbourg has been a French town now since the end of WWII. It was French, then German, then French, then German, now French. They have a river that runs around the town, not so much in the mode of San Antonio, with shops for food places. These are buildings and places that are older than the US. The Alsace region is known for its wine and grape production. Some grain was raised by the farmers before they started making wine. The Romans had a tax office there, and the town was critical in ... read more

Getting there is half the fun. Actually the title is not totally accurate, since we aren’t really on a raft like Huck was. This is a very nice boat, river barge, tourist magnet, and allows you to float (with motors) down the Rhine River, and see the beautiful country sides of Switzerland, France, Germany, and Holland. We met our travel partners in the parking lot, and were glad we got there early so as to miss some of the TSA wait time that we factored into our journey. We left Houston as the rain was coming in. (Oh, did you know we have gotten a lot of rain lately?) We left as it was starting to rain. The day started with a very pleasant surprise at the airport. When we got in line for the TSA ... read more

Europe » France » Alsace » Riquewihr September 19th 2015

Geo: 48.1669, 7.29728Saturday we traveled to the Alsace region of France along the Route des Vins (wine route) to meet up with Deb and Guenther in the 16th century walled city of Riquewihr. Over the weekend, we visited several of the local villages, including Ribeauville and Kayserberg, in addition to the old town of Colmar with its canals and centuries-old buildings. We also made it a point to sample as much of the local Alsatian cuisine as we could in the few days we had left. Monday we headed back to Heidelberg, Germany to return the bikes and prepare them for storage at Knopf Tours - until our next visit. While hanging out at Knopf's B&B we had the opportunity to meet several other motorcyclists, one of whom had been on the road for five years, ... read more

I had been to Alsace with my family 2 yeas back. I have tried to describe my holiday here . Hope you find my post purposive. Alsace . Reminiscence of my holidays give me a sense of gratification . I often sit back to recollect about my past vacations . France is very much like the Indian subcontinent . Each region has its own history / architecture / language / culture / features/ cuisine and uniqueness . You can blindly take a trip to any near by place and notice the diversity immediately . One such vacation which left a lasting mark is my family trip to the region of Alsace , France . Though in those days , I didn’t blog much , the recess is so indelible that every tiny bit is etched in ... read more

Neuf-Briesach, France July 31st After spending another day in Lauterbourg, we cycled to Gambshein and spent two days there. We are trying to slow up a bit because we have extra time. Our next stop was Strausbourg, where we have been before. They have just finished remodeling the whole campground and it was super nice. However, the camping was 26,50 euros which did include internet. Chuck's crank on his bike was making a clicking noise and when we skyped with Dan he said not to ride it. The next day we were due a friends of friends in Wolfischeim just 10k out of Stausbourg. We decided to ride there since it was a short distance. We arrived safely and the next day Sonia took us to a bike shop for repair. The bike was ready that ... read more

We lucky with the weather. Today again we left with a beautiful blue sky. Also a Saturday and not that much traffic on the road. A very nice area we drive through. Lots of grapes everywhere. We are in the wine route what they call here Alsace. It is a romantic wine route. Stopping at a road restaurant we tried for an ice coffee, This is still France so to explain what we wanted was already a big job. But the girl said she understood and went of. After a while she came back with two black coffees with a block of ice dumped in it. That is their ice coffee. We stayed in a sort of farm, wine farm and were received by the owners with a glass of wine. A very nice welcome. A ... read more

One thing that makes traveling in foreign countries easier these days is Google Maps on your cell phone. I’m sure no one remembers how I wrote years ago about staring at the big bus map in Nice, France, trying to figure out how to get from here to there, and not figuring out anything, finally realizing I was looking at the wrong map. Now, with a GPS and internet connection on your phone, all you have to do is type in your destination at the top, then press the route icon. You can choose walking, driving or mass transit. I discovered today that Strasbourg is just west of the Rhine River, so I decided to head out of town and go to the Rhine Promenade on the other side of the Rhine. I entered Rhine Promenade ... read more

I moved into my small apartment yesterday, Wednesday, just in time for another heat wave. The sun hit the front windows early this morning, and heated the place up pretty early, so I'm back at my hotel where there is air conditioning. Timing is everything, right? Sometimes you lose and sometimes you win. I'm keeping my stuff at the apartment, and will have dinner and breakfast there.... read more
