All good things are coming to an end. So was this terrific trip to Europe. The last few days we spent visiting family and friends. Not that many left. We made a quick trip to Wormer and Jisp, not far away from Amsterdam. Jisp is a tiny, but beautiful little place, ringed by lots of water. It makes a fantastic place to take photos. In Wormer close to Jisp we visited friends. We had not seen them for a long time, that makes it nice to talk about old times over a nice cup of coffee. Pity, some nice people were not there anymore. In Holland places are so close together, we could combine this trip with a visit to Haarlem, where we spent our younger years. Memories came back to you while walking through this ... read more

It is always hard to say Good Bye, special to Family. But it was time to say goodbye to Etten Leur and Jola and Hugo. Even the weather was crying. Showers were obstructing the view over the pretty Dutch landscape. As always we were so nicely received by the Family Weema. Just inside the door and the coffee and apple cake was served. So much to tell it filled the whole afternoon. That night the Weema's took us to a Chinese restaurant, where a very nice meal topped of this exciting day. The weather did not help so the following day was mostly spent inside, except for the evening. With the four of us we went to this small restaurant, called; "De vierde Baarsjes". A lovely place, very romantic that has those special dishes, like Chateau ... read more

We were so lucky to be in Holland to see the agriculture show that is held every ten years. It was held this time in Venlo, that is about 160 kilometres away. Not really that far over the excellent freeways here. It took just over an hour to get there. We saw soon that it was very well organised. An enormous parking field for thousands of cars was placed a fair bit away from the entrance, but shuttle busses took the many visitors to the entrance. There was no difference in price for Seniors ore Adults, but it included the parking and a single gondola trip, which was good for it gave a good overside of what there was to see. That was of course gardens, plants, and flowers with here and there a different stand ... read more

This is the second year we are celebrating our birthdays away from Home. Nevertheless it turned out very nice. Arranging a cake and a birthday card was not as difficult as it was for Liz when it was mine, but that is just being lucky when you are staying by Family. Up till now we had nice warm summer weather, very warm actually and to feel cooler we visited a skie hall close to Etten Leur. Something that reminded us on earlier days when we were doing this sport in Australia. To have this real Dutch feeling, you have to visit a store like Albert Hein and close to that a Market. You hear the loud voices everywhere that praise on their wares, be it vegetables, meat or fish, people always look at the loudest. When ... read more

We had a beautiful dinner the night before we left with a enormous ice dessert. For the next week or so we be the guest of Jola & Hugo in Etten Leur. We told them we take the warm weather with us and we did. It was only 210 kilometres to go, not that long.Deciding again to take the small country roads, but that became a fiasco. In Holland those small roads are not really that easy, tractors, bike tracks on each side take a lot of time. We tried but not for long we soon went to the autobahn and that was easier and quicker. Just the one stop to buy some flowers. We arrived early afternoon. Emptied the car, the rest of the day was spent on talking. It was indeed very warm and ... read more

The first things we noticed were a pair of wooden shoes standing in our room. Was this for sale or did we had to do something with it. Yes, if we did not want any cleaning done the wooden shoes stay outside the room, cleaning the room you put them inside. Very clever. Today after having a good breakfast we set of to enjoy the beautifull area of Twente. Forrests, fields of corn or granes, a feast for your eyes. The GPR sent us again over the little lanes that runs between the farms and gives you those excellent views on the meadows where the cows are grazing in the warm summer sun. Farmers are everywhere busy and obstruct you on the road by the giant tractors pulling all sorts of machinery. We made a visit ... read more

We spent one more day in Ahrweiler and Bad Neuenahr. We visited a foodfair in Bad Neuenahr but only mastered a piece of plum cake, not feeling for any fatty food.Next day we took leave from the nice people in Ahrweiler. We had a glorious stay there. After a good breakfast we left Ahrweiler and went further north direction Holland We landed in a little place called Tubbergen. It is in Twente, close to Hengelo, where I spent the first twelve of so years of my live. Up to a certain point the GPR worked well and we enjoyed the route it had set out for us. We had a mixture of Autobahn and country roads that gave us a good variety of scenery and traffic. Roadworks sent us twice to dead ends but it will ... read more

We said Good Bye to the Kolchens Family after a very nice stay at their place in Kues. We fiiled a new adress into GPR and that took us for a while along the Mosel. When we saw we were leaving the river, we had a coffee and said Good Bye to a very nice area. We now went inland and were sent over small roads and through little villages where you only go 30 k.m. per hour. But there were amazing views. Really unforgettable. The distance to where we had to go was only 89 k.m but it took a few hours to get there. Going very slow through the many hairpins, not to get entangled with oncoming trucks, tractors and not to forget, idiots that just think the road belongs to them. Anyway, we ... read more

We are really sticking out with our French numberplate. All what you see here is German & Dutch ones. Unbelievable busy with holiday makers and we must say, it is like walking in Holland. Also lots of Belgiums, but they sound like they come from Limburg. We went the next day again to Bernkastel just looking at the masses of people, that walk around aimlessly. Carrying backpacks, holding kids and have dogs on the line. The kids do not really want to be there but are bought by ice creams, or lollies. Very amusing to see how they go about it. We also walked around, looking at all the shops that have their wares stalled out in the already very small streets. You even see so now and than a car wurming it's way through there ... read more

It is such a pity to leave our nice place at the Rhine, but the time keeps ticking, so we can only hope the next place is just as nice. We had to take the ferry to the other side of the Rhine to visit Braubach that has this magnificent castle that is completely intact. The name of it is the Marktsburg. We were there early so we had a park for the car but not early enough to go up to the castle for the round trip took three hours and that much time we did not have. We took some nice pictures of Braubach so the visit was well worth it. The GPR sent us to the autobahn but we ignored it and did our own thing. That of course did not work but ... read more
