Today we spent a wonderful day walking the cobbled streets of Strasbourg, after entering the town by tram, we walked along the canal and caught the next tourist boat (Batorama) which gave us a unique perspective of the buildings and mixed German/France rule over the last 200 years. After we hoped off the boat we walked through the streets until we found the Cathedral of Notre Dame which had no queue or no charge to enter. This building is one of the most ornately decorated cathedral I think we have seen to date. Walking further through town we found some lovely Christmas decorations shops and purchased a couple of items that will feature in our place next Christmas. We finally found one of the locks that the Batorama boats went through and watched the lock system ... read more

Today we had to say goodbye to Epernay and drive 370km to the eastern part of France, and the Strasbourg area in Alsace. The drive was not tiring as we were on the A roads at 130km most of the time. Half way we stopped at Verdun where there is a WW1 memorial and museum depicting the struggles of both the French and German Army's in the 300 day war during 1914. While I an not a war enthusiast, you have to admire the resilience and sacrifices that so many made for their country. I always think that there has to be a better way to resolve disputes! Sorry there is no photos, we took about 150 and they have been lost, we think the spirits of the solders didn't want us taking photos. On to ... read more

Strasbourg, also known as Capitale De Noel (Christmas Capital) is a must visit around the winter festive period. We visited during the Xmas break of 2017. The timing could have been better, as we were bang in the middle of the holiday period from Xmas eve to St. Stephen's day (celebrated on 26th of December in Alsace region). The shops were closed and many were resting at home spending time with their families. Yet, we found our own ways to walk around and explore. From Paris, we took the rather long and tiring bus route to Strasbourg on the 24th of December. If we are to go there again, we would either drive or take a train. On reaching Strasbourg around 5 PM, we rushed to the famous Christmas Market to explore it as much as ... read more

Fri 1stDecember There was snow overnight on the lower slopes of the Pyrenees, and we saw a few snow ploughs about…..didn’t think too much about it! The very strong Northerly winds from yesterday continued. Trundled along the D6009 road past Perpignon (got lost for a while! – poor roadworks signage), Narbonne and into Beziers where the A75 to Millau is signed. Always blue sky ahead of us, even though it was still cloudy, but when we stopped for lunch at the first aire at Paulan the sun was out, even though it was bitterly cold. Things got decidedly worse from then!! Saw a few lorries and cars with snow and ice on them and wondered where they had come from! Oh silly us!! The A75 of course! As we drove up there was a lot of ... read more

Monday was my last day in Alsace and I decided to check out somewhere that hadn’t originally been on my list of places to visit. The town of Neuf-Brisach was the last fortification designed by Louis XIV’s famed architect Sebastien Le Prestre de Vauban and is one of the best preserved. The town is just past Colmar, so I thought it would make for an easier day than driving all the way up to the Maginot Line fortress of Fort du Hackenberg, which would be about as far as Verdun was. The drive to Neuf-Brisach was about 45 minutes, but very pretty and not a lot of traffic, which was nice. On the way, I saw a sign for a Maginot Line memorial museum which I decided to check out on the way back, just to ... read more

With the weather changing, and it still being a weekend, I decided to spend Sunday driving down the Route des Cretes (route of crests) through the Parc Naturel Ballons des Vosges. In the next few months this will be home to a number of ski fields, but for now it is still open to cars. I asked at my hotel for a map, but language difficulties resulted on me being given a print-out of directions to the tourist information centre. So I put my first destination, Col du Bonhomme, into the GPS and fortunately it took me the way I wanted to go, via Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines. The drive up the hill was nice, but very windy and the road is good, but there’s nowhere to stop on the side of the road to take photos. I had ... read more

Friday morning I spent finishing up the last blog and then had a nap. So I didn’t head out to Colmar until the early afternoon. I managed to figure out how to stop the gps from taking me onto the motorway all the time, which was nice, but it still wasn’t happy when I drove to Colmar following the Route des Vins. I’m sure if somebody else was driving, the Route des Vins would be a very different experience, but as I could not drink my way down the road, I had to be satisfied with an enjoyable drive through lots and lots of vineyards. It’s tough, I know, but somebody has to do it. I arrived in Colmar with little plan about seeing anything in particular. I only really knew that it was a picturesque ... read more
