Strasbourg, the capital of Christmas
Published: December 22nd 2009Europe » France » Alsace » StrasbourgPlease be patient, we're having some technical difficulties... The last month has presented me with a series of technological and administrative difficulties. One December afternoon, I was singing along to cheery Mariah Carey Christmas carol covers, when my itunes keep stopping and my computer began lagging. None of the programs on my computer would respond so I tried restarting it. This is when, what I came to know as the "folder of doom," appeared alone on a blank grey screen. I tried multiple times to restart it with no luck. I looked up what this mysterious symbol of a folder with a question mark meant on Taryn's computer and the news was not pleasant. My hard drive had crashed! Maybe the world was trying to tell me not to listen to Mariah Carey? Straight away Monday ... read more
I have been in France for almost 2 months! I can't believe how quickly the time is going now that I’m pretty much finished with all the administrative paper work, and am getting into a routine with school. I absolutely love the classes I’m taking. From Gender and Politics to Sociologoy of International Relations, my classes are a lot more specific and I find them mre interesting than what I was taking at SFU. Although, I must admit, I am now grateful for the million french grammar courses I took, and my professors that drilled the proper technique for writing a french dissertaion into my head! Most of my courses here don’t require reading or have assignments, they are 100% based on the final exam. This is a bit scary, but in the mean time before ... read more
Day 3……On the way to Colmar, France….after a fantastic breakfast with fantastic views we were on our way to Colmar, France. We had a little bit of a difficult road change which forced me into a power U-Turn, which brought me to an intersection which I found out was a no left turn intersection. This of course was a mere moment of excitement for Gail (she will kill me this year) after I made an illegal left turn and ran over some little bitty rubber things with reflectors on them that separated lanes (Alana tell Loraine she would be proud). Gail is now taking over…They were not little bitty, but tall, at least two feet maybe be bigger, reflectors…I could not believe that Larry ran over three of them… Thank goodness it did not hurt ... read more
Thursday Attempt #2 at finding a pool to go swimming at! This time I was going with a friend and I knew where the pool was, so you would think there wouldn’t be a problem right? Guess again! The pool was so full there were probably 15-20 people in each 25m lane! I did about 3 laps and then decided to leave because swimming in such a crowded pool was pointless; I had to stop every 2 minutes. So exactly one week after getting lost trying to find the other pool, I found myself once again lost for a place to practice! Maybe next Thursday I will try somewhere else, third time’s a charm right? I did ending up having a great sandwich that day from a place called “Made in France.” There were a bunch ... read more
On Thursday I had class until 12 and then I wanted to go to a swim class for triathletes at 12:30. I looked up the pool address in a trip planner type thing on the transit website and followed those directions. Two trams and a bus later, I could not see a pool anywhere around. I stopped and asked a man on the street where the pool was and he told me that it was on the exact opposite side of town. By this time I was already late, so I decided just to go back to the school (which wasn’t easy to find either now that I was in the middle of nowhere!) When I got back to the school I stopped by the sports office to ask the students who run it if ... read more

Alsace: the land of half-timbered cuteness overload (Colmar, Strasbourg, Eguisheim, Kaysersberg, Riquewihr, Hunawihr, & Ribeauville)
Published: December 1st 2009Europe » France » Alsace » ColmarDay 27 (Wednesday, September 23, 2009) We left sunny Beaune, and began the two and a half hour drive towards Alsace, where we would stay for two nights in the town of Colmar. I slept for most of the journey, but did wake up at one point to see that the sun was being covered by a very thick layer of fog. Considering it was nearly 12:00 in the afternoon, I found it very strange to see the fog. Luckily, the sun finally won the battle and burned through all of the gray fog because by the time we reached Colmar, there were no clouds in the sky. Prior to going out and exploring the city, we wanted to stop by the hotel to park the car and check into our room at Hotel Turenne. ... read more
Class has begun! The boat tour was a pretty interesting way to see the city. It took about an hour, and there were headphones so you could listen to a commentary about Strasbourg. Fun fact: the city has 27 bridges! I have officially started classes! We got a list of courses we could pick from on Friday, and this week we went to any classes we were interested in, we just have to hand in our course selection by the end of the week. Monday I went to a class about the history of the European concept. The prof seems nice but he has a southern France accent that I’ve been told is really hard to understand. He speaks very very slowly though so I didn’t have any troubles. My evening class is about culture and ... read more
La Fin de Semaine Saturday Taryn, Katherine and I met at a street market to shop for fruit and stuff. I bought a loaf of bread and a bagel for less than 2 euros. I also bought a few oranges, apples and a kiwi, a pear for under 2 euros! We’re going to try and shop there every weekend if it runs throughout the year. Next we headed to Ikea (round 2) to get a few things we hadn’t picked up the week before. On the way back we also stopped at a grocery store called “Simply”. We carried 2 (almost) full-length mirrors and 3 huge bags of Ikea stuff around the grocery store and FINALLY found toilet paper (we had all been using pocket sized Kleenex). Toilet paper seems to be a difficult commodity to ... read more
Saturday My hands are raw and sore from lugging around over 100lbs of suitcases. My shoulders ache from carrying my huge back pack and sitting uncomfortably on the plane. I’ve now been awake for 32 hours. The departure from YVR went smoothly and tearlessly. After gathering our luggage at the strasbourg airport, we hailed a taxi (the driver laughed at home much luggage we had) and headed off to our first stop : le cité universitaire Robertsau, soon to be home to Taryn and me. I went into the residence office to find out what we need to do to get our keys while Taryn and Katherine watched our bags outside. The office was busy and the woman who helped me get my keys also taught me cultural difference #1 : where Canadians are polite and ... read more
We woke up, got ready and checked out of the hotel. We headed back to the downtown area. Lori was hoping shops might be open. We found a café and had a light breakfast because we were still stuffed from last night. Most shops were not open so Lori and I walked around just window shopping. When we went by the cathedral, mass was going. We went in and I sat down and enjoyed listening to the service and the choir. Their singing was unbelievable angelic. After the service we walked back to the car and took off for Riquewihr. This is a little town close to Colmar that Kirsten and I visited. Kirsten recommended I take Lori here. Well Kirsten was correct, Lori loved it. All the cute little shops were open so after walking ... read more
