Our last day in Europe :( We started out the morning by going to a place to eat goose and duck liver. I wasn't a huge fan of the liver, but I did atleast try it. It reminded me of what I think cat food would taste like. But, I did like the wine! We got to tour around the factory and watch a video of how the business runs and came to be. The man who showed us around was very nice and informative. As much as I didn't like the foie gras, I enjoyed our visit. When then got to spend a couple of hours of free time in Strasbourg for lunch. Vanessa and I ate ham and cheese sandwiches on bagets at a little cafe outside. Then a group of us headed to ... read more

It seems as though some of the best things in life present themselves when you are not looking for it. In my case, is rings true. I have never really been a beer guru, hand me a cold Coors and I am good to go! However, when we went to the brewry in France, it seems as though that changed with the blink of an eye. My favorite beer was there, just waiting for me to find it. :) We began the day with a visit to the Fois Gras place. I am not the kind that has a stomach of steel when it comes to unusual food, so the thought of it kinda gave me a funny feeling to being with. I had tried Fois Gras once before at work, and with the goose fat ... read more

Today our first stop was at the foie gras factory which was very interesting because they explained to us how they process and package geese and duck livers. I was amazed how they did everything by hand and had no machines that packages and labeled everything. The gentleman that gave us the tour was very different from some of the other people that gave us tours such as Christian. This man worked in retail and realized that retail wasn't his passion and he loved foie gras and there just happened to be a opportunity that opened up for him to take over a company that made it and he did. He did it because it was his passion much like Christian but this man didn't grow up making it he just started because he loved it. ... read more

This is our last day in Strasbourg. We left around 8:15am and we went to a place that sells duck and goose, also known as Foie Gras. We saw a power point on how everything is prepared. The meat is brought in by the person they purchase the food from. They clean the meat and then they slice it and put it into jars. They fill them up and then they put them in a machine which cooks it as well. They food last for up to 2 years. We tried a sample of goose and duck. The goose liver was smooth/creamy like. It tasted like liver to me. We had some Pinot Gris wine to go with it. As far as texture, it is better to start with the goose liver and sip the wine. ... read more

Today we visited a foie gras factory! The goose and duck foie gras was an experience. I enjoyed the goose much more than the duck. The wine that accompained it went perfect with it. In New York foie gras can not be served because the geese are force fed to make their livers bigger. The owner of the Foie Gras du Ried mentioned that the farmers he gets his geese from have a very good relationship with them. They feed the geese, then wait 30mins to an hour and feed them again and this continues throughout the day. While some of the group toured a brewery, the rest of us stayed in Strasbourg to do some shopping. First we sat at a little cafe and had coffee because it was too early to have lunch. After, ... read more

Today was awesome!!!!!! We started out at a foie gras factory. Though I did not get to see the geese and what not like i was hoping we did get to see all of the manufactoring and spicing, and molding of the livers, as well as a video that explained all this and the cooking method. Now foie gras is very controversial, because basically geese are force fed to fatten up their livers, and some places that try to be eco-friendly like New York refuse to serve it. The protests against foie gras and the strict regulations that manufactures have to follow are found all over the world, but goose and duck liver, and a glass or 2 of wine all before 10 am...Who can complain. That is a life style i could get used to! ... read more

PROMPT: What issues surround foie gras? Are these American only issues? Have you found the beer in Europe to be different that what we normally drink in America? Some of the issues that surround foie gras are the humane treatment of the animals being used for the product. In order to get the goose or duck’s liver large enough for a good pate the handlers must force feed them ensuring an enlarged liver. Many people would claim that this is animal abuse and is wrong. Also, the living conditions of the animals must be taken into consideration. If the animals are being both force fed and then living in bad conditions it makes the whole process seem very cruel. I think this is only an issue in America because in Europe foie gras is seen as ... read more

Today was our final full day in Europe. We started the day off right by eating goose liver and drinking wine. This was not nearly as bad as it sounds as the liver tasted much like dark meat poultry with a texture comparable to playdoh. Foie Gras is very hard to get in America, and is even banned in New York due to animal cruelty issues. After trying the Foie Gras, we were given the choice to either go to a brewery or shop in Strasbourg. I didn’t really care either way, however, I chose to got to Strasbourg with Janet, Ashley and Jamie, as they were the three people on this trip I had grown the closest to, and I would rather spend my last day with them. In the town, we finished up our ... read more

Tuesday, June 2 is the day I tried foie gras and to be real honest it was not my cup of tea. I think it got to me mentaly knowing that it is duck and goose liver and so automatically I just did not want to eat it. I'd have to so say out of all the tours we got this was my least favorite. I thought the guy compared to Hauns the 4 and Christoff was absolutely a drag but Mrs.Runnels did say he told her that foie gras was his passion even though it did not come across that way. I was happy to leave there and move on the next adventure. We had a choice after eating lunch and that was to either go to a brewery or to stay in Strasbourg to ... read more

We started off our day by going to the Haut Koenigsbourg Castle. It was my first time to ever tour a castle and there were some very interesting things we learned, such as they don’t sleep laying down because it resembles being dead. Although we had a tour guide that was explaining every little detail of history to us, which some of it was interesting, I think the experience would have been better if we had toured it on our own. Our next stop was the Maison Zimmer winery. I was very excited about touring the winery because I love wine and have always wanted to tour a winery and do taste testing. The lady informed us that they only made white wine and one red wine. They had 6 different types of grapes for the ... read more
