I have dated this Wed.22 Sept. and hope to keep it short as there is simply not enough time to do all of these in huge detail. The arrival in Strasbourg from Colmar was relatively efficient as the train trip is only about 35 minutes. However finding a hotel here was impossible as I asked all the hotels within reasonable walking distance of the station -- I later found out, after seeing "complet" (full) on most hotel desks, so you did not even have to ask, that it was a European Parliament sitting week -- one week a month in which you can guarantee that the hotels are virtually booked up a year ahead. I had to resort to going right down to the bottom of the Old Town near the cathedral on spec and found ... read more

So I have now been in Strasbourg for more than a week! I have already had too many adventures to share, so I'll just share a few of the most recent ones. Yesterday I took a trip to the Vosges Mountains and hiked 15 kilometers of so up to Mont St. Odile. This "mountain" was pretty sad by Colorado standards, only 700 or so meters, but the French apparently don't use switchbacks for trails. We covered most of that elevation as directly as possible, which made it equally difficult to keep up with Hannah on the way up, and not respraining my ankle/ falling off the trail on the way down. In a showing of excellent planning, I wore jeans, a long-sleeve base layer, and brought a jacket and umbrella. I was extremely prepared for rain, ... read more

Just finished day two of Strasbourg and still going strong! I stumbled upon a European fair today and saw, among other things, an immense Alsacian cow, a footvolley competition, the Tesla Roadster, as well as possibly the worst car in existence. With that, back to Poland! After we left Berlin for Poland, I quickly came to realize that the Polish countryside rivals Nebraska and Wyoming for most boring drive. At one point I fell asleep looking at a stand of trees, and when I woke up a few hours later, I thought we were still passing the same stands of trees! We arrived at the Barcyz Valley, though, and the scenery became much nicer. The Barycz Valley has the largest number of freshwater ponds in Europe, and consequently also hosts an amazing array of birds and ... read more

Finally I've arrived in France and have the time and the access to internet to write my very first of many blog posts, which should be quite a bear, to say the least. In general, I hope to update you all at least once a week, on a to-be-determined day of the week; If you so choose, you can just automate the responsibility of checking my blog here by choosing to subscribe to the blog and letting the internet inform you when I have posted any new content. Thanks for your collective interest, I'll try to keep these relatively short (excluding this one) and entertaining! Some background on the trip: I arrived in Berlin 13 days early to join all the other study abroad students on a journey through Central Europe. We stopped at Berlin, Wroclaw ... read more

Strasbourg is beautiful and looks like a little gingerbread town. It’s surrounded by the River Ill and is made up of some many pretty little, half wooded houses. Unfortunately the weekend we arrived was a long weekend in France so the place was packed. After much pushing and shoving we went on a boat tour around the city which was a great introduction. Like many other cities in France, Strasbourg was constructed in such a way to prevent invasion. So much so that they were able to manage the water levels of the river to prevent enemy boats from sailing in (see the picture of the gated bridge) and created locks to move up and down different levels of the river. While on the cruise you go through two locks. The boat squeezes into this tiny ... read more

Geo: 48.5829, 7.74375After all three kids did a repeat performance to buy bread and croissants, we headed off to Strasbourg, which was about 50 mins away. It is quite a large city, and one of the European Parliament seats, and after a bit of a false start to find the tourism office or a tourist map, we were thrilled to find the tourist centre is all very close to each other, and easy to navigate on foot. (Boo and hiss to the hotel concierge who wouldn't give us a free map of the city, because we were not guests! And thanks to the helpful girls at the Best Western Hotel, who not only gave us the free map but showed us what things to see!) We walked along the River Ile, watching boats navigate the locks, ... read more

Day 14 - We began the day with a very poor breakfast - they brought it up to our room, which sounded like it would be great, but they failed to bring any milk for the tea.... All I wanted was some tea! We ended up going and having a second breakfast after tipping the milk-less tea and coffee down the smelly drain, and only eating one of the hard-looking croissants. From here we attempted to go to the Palais Rohan, but discovered upon arriving that it didn't open until 12. Luckily it had only been a two minute walk from our second-breakfast, so we headed to the Alsatian Museum instead. Fifteen minutes later, we arrived there to find that it also did not open until 12pm. So we continued on, heading to Petit France to ... read more

Ellie and I planned a weekend trip to Strasbourg ages ago, but it somehow managed to creep up on it. Time is passing more quickly here in Douai, thankfully, and I ended up throwing things in my bag in the twenty minute window between my bus home from school and our train to Paris. Fortunately I've had a lot of practice with packing these last six months. Strasbourg is located right on the border with Germany, and it's been passed past back and forth between France and Germany several times. It's been part of France since WWII, but the German influence is everywhere. The streets are all named twice: once in French and once in German. The food is different from the typical French cuisine, and the architecture is much different. It was a nice change ... read more

This was one of my favorite day trips that we took. A quick drive west maybe an hour or so and we found ourselves in france. Once we crossed the bridge we were met with unfamiliar signs and language. This is a beautiful area. I loved all the old winding narrow streets. We walked near the water. Unfortunately due to the crazy amount of rain and snow melting, the river was too high so we couldnt take the boat tour. She told Nick as friendly as the French do. With luck we stumbled upon the fleamarket I was hoping to find, but everything was too expensive for my wallet. The best part of our afternoon was pizza, pasta, and beer at an outdoor cafe. It was great! There are some really great photos of the Strasbourg ... read more
