It's our latest night yet (bar our night of heavy drinking on the ferry, but we don't want to talk about that) and given how full-on our day was, it's actually a remarkable feat we are still awake! We had a rather delightful breakfast at our hotel, followed by a canal tour. We saw The Little Mermaid, the Royal Palace, the "Black Diamond", the Opera House, the National Museum, some churches and the old Fisherman's Village. Then we headed to Tivoli - the Danish amusement park. We had an absolutely fantastic time - we rode every adult ride ( and many of the children's ones), including a swing that is 85 metres in the air, an assortment of rollercoasters, and a "sheer drop" ride that left our stomachs in our mouths. It was brilliant! SO much ... read more

Just an update on my living situation! On Monday, I moved to my second host family, the Valbjorns. They live only 1km or so from my last hosties, which is really convenient. My new family owns a company selling bottled water and fruit to companies. They have a 15 year old daughter named Helene, who is (hopefully) going to Ordrup Gymnasium in August. The family are incredibly welcoming and include me in everything. I feel really at home here. Helene is very talkative and we get along great. Gretha is probably one of the sweetest women I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. She is so interested in everything about me and eager to help me with anything! Lars was a bit scary at first (sorry Lars, if you're reading this haha!), but he is ... read more

Our last day in Oslo was interesting. The three of us strolled down to the Cemetry (which is in the centre of town) to pay homage to the graves of Munch and Ibsen. Then Bri-Bri packed her stuff and headed to Haugesund to partake in some crazy metallic times (aka: the Karmaggedon Metal Festival)... Alyce and Mich wandered the streets of Oslo for a little while, before heading on down to the Nobel Peace Museum. It was really well designed, interesting and inspiring - the temporary exhibition (celebrating the 2008 winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, Martti Ahtisaari) featured some great quotes; "Do you want to win, or do you want peace?" The permanent exhibition was highly interactive, and we learnt alot about Nobel's life (he invented dynamite...ironic, huh?), the past recipients of the prize, and ... read more

SORRY! No blog entry for so so looong! My excuse is that I had to write out a report for rotary about my stay so far and I... Couldn't be bothered doing this as well :) Some of the stuff I write in here will probably be copied and pasted from that report, too. Hooray for being lazy! SO! At the end of March I went to my school Gala (like the ball). It was ok, not fantastic, but not bad. I stayed with Matilde and Sarah almost all night. The Gala was held in the school, which I found a bit strange, and they had a live band, and no dj. I think, though, that the weirdest thing about it was that there was a bar where the students could buy beer, wine or shots. ... read more

Ribe, Denmark Part 2 Since we are a budget travelers, we bought some food, alcohols from Germany. There are two grocery stores just outside of the city center. I must say that the goods are VERY expensive. We bought 2 frozen pizzas, bread rolls, bananas, honey, chips, and tea. It came up to be over $100.00. We went to check out local food as well. One evening we wne this tiny little restaurant near the church. Everything in this restaurant was not straight. The building was built in during midevil time. I guess people were shorter/smaller back than. The doors were shorter than me ( I am 175 cm tall). I had a wild duck with shot gun pallets still in it. The meat was very gamey and I would not try it again. On the ... read more

Back in Feb, 2009, my wife and I visited Ribe, Denmark. We drove from Soest, Germany (near Dortmond). We got on highway 2 and when we got to Hanover we got on highway 7 all the way to Demark. It was about 5 hour journey from Soest to Ribe. The weather was not too kind to us during the entire journey. There were times that the speed limit went from 120, 100, and all the way to 80 km. Since, it was my first road trip in Europe, it was a definitely from driving in the States. Frist, there was no toll booth, which means no stop on the highway. It made a lot of sense because you do not need to slow down or stop to pay the tolls. Once, we got off the highway ... read more

Well, I sure saw a lot of Copenhagen in 5 days! While Sandy was talking and listening,I ran around the city and even got as far afield as Roskilde. The Museums are great and thanks Greg and Annie for the Denmark guide book, which I almost wore out. The idea of the 2 ½ hour bus trip on the first day was great as it helped us know what was where and gave me a list of places to visit. The first was the round tower, a19th century observatory which you walk up to view the city. Then the National Museum and the Carlsberg Glyptotek, a museum established by the founder of Carlsberg beer! I also fitted in a visit to the Carlsberg Brewery! The Glyptotek is an eclectic mix of Egyptian relics, Greek and Roman marble ... read more

My gosh things have been crazy. Tomorrow is Easter so we've been on easter holiday all week (Påske Ferie). Catherine og Josephine, my host mum and eldest host sister, went to Rome on a trip and I went to Odense, on Fyn, to visit friends. In Odense, I stayed with Caity, one of my best friends here. She's from Sydney and an absolutely gorgeous girl. Naomi, another Sydney-sider who is staying in West Jylland also came over for the week. We partied a lot at James Dean, a pub in Odense, with the Americans Scott and Marshall. Ryan L from Canada also came over to Odense for a couple of days. It was a very emotional week. There were a lot of laughs and we had a great time mostly, but towards the end there were ... read more
