Our last day in Oslo was interesting. The three of us strolled down to the Cemetry (which is in the centre of town) to pay homage to the graves of Munch and Ibsen. Then Bri-Bri packed her stuff and headed to Haugesund to partake in some crazy metallic times (aka: the Karmaggedon Metal Festival)...
Alyce and Mich wandered the streets of Oslo for a little while, before heading on down to the Nobel Peace Museum. It was really well designed, interesting and inspiring - the temporary exhibition (celebrating the 2008 winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, Martti Ahtisaari) featured some great quotes;
"Do you want to win, or do you want peace?" The permanent exhibition was highly interactive, and we learnt alot about Nobel's life (he invented dynamite...ironic, huh?), the past recipients of the prize, and were encouraged to reflect on the role each individual plays in bringing peace into the world. Then we bought some awesome fair-trade stuff from the friendly shop assistant who was completely in awe of us on account of our HUGE backpacks - we seriously more closely resemble turtles than humans when we wear them!
We boarded the "ferry" - which in Australia would
"War on Terror - The Board Game"
Something Michy would have bought if only she didn't have weight/space restrictions. It comes with an Axis of Evil spinner! Hahahaha... Brilliant. (For sale in the Nobel Peace Museum) be called a cruise ship - and decided to take in a film onboard, Monsters vs Aliens, which was advertised as being in English. We were about 5 minutes late to the cinema, and it took us a further to figure out that the gobble-de-gook being spoken by the characters was not going to morph into English any time soon. We watched just the same, and laughed an incredible amount - we think we actually picked up a lot more of the physical humour/filmic references by not being able to understand the dialogue! (If anybody is interested, we really want to watch this in English when we arrive home.) The man who had sold us our tickets found us afterwards and apologised profusely for the film accidently screening in Swedish, and gave us our money back. We decided that the most appropriate corse of action when two Aussie girls are stuck on an overnight boat, on a freezing ocean on the way to Denmark is to drink a large amount of cocktails and go dancing (they had live music and a discoteque ). We had fun, but awoke somewhat hungover....
FINALLY we
touched down in Denmark - the home of Hamlet and the humble danish (which we intend to eat many of) - we checked into our hotel, wondered Stroget (the main pedestrian shopping mall), had a delicious lunch, Michele discovered that the Danes have soy milk (something she couldn't get in Norway) and did a little victory jig, then they headed back to the hotel so Alyce could sleep off her hangover and Michele could get in touch with the virtual world. Our plans are as follows:
-Tonight we want to go see a drag show.
-Tomorrow we are hoping to go on a kayaking tour through the canals, watch the royal guards march through the city centre, head to Tivoli (amusement park and gardens) and finish off at "Ice Bar"where we will freeze to death whilst drinking from glasses made of... you guessed it... ice!
Copenhagen absolutely reeks of cool-ness, everything is sort of hip, but cozy. We like it alot. So far.
Hope everything is going well back home! Love to one and all...
-Mich & Alyce
