So much to say. So little space. This will be my place where I try to consolidate my experiences into words. This is very challenging, so I will also provide pictures to try to give you a glimpse of what my life is like here. First off, I live with a host family named the Larsens (Finn and Berit are my parents, Maria (14) and Stefen (12) are the children) They live in a tiny town called Om which does not even exist on most maps, and only has a couple hundred people living in it. My house is incredibly modern, almost looking like it is from Florida, and was built only 3 years ago. There is actually a fingerprinting system to get into the house! SO COOL! I love living with a host family. They ... read more

I've now been in Denmark for a week. I woke up this morning, looked out the window and - what do you know! - it's snowing. It's not much, but it's more than I've ever seen before. It's almost covered the ground. Also, yesterday, I went with my host brothers and their big brother (Brien) and his girlfriend (Lene) to Copenhagen for the first time. We went bowling (I lost, agghh) then walked down the longest shopping mall in the world. Brien kept saying how boring it all is, but I thought it was amazing. I'm in love with the buildings here. Not to mention there's like every shop I could want o that street. There was even Top Shop! We went past the main night clubbing area and it looks pretty cool, and tha was ... read more

Since I've been in Denmark, there have been several things which make me laugh every time I see them. 1. The word "SLUT" written in every second shop window. No- I'm not living in the red light district- in danish, "slut" means "finish", and it refers to the finishing of the sales, or "udsalg". doesn't stop me laughing at it everytime though haha! 2. The legal age for drinking is 16, yet the legal age for smoking is 18! Weird? i think so. 3. You'd think that being like -81720198012801 degrees, noone would ever eat or drink anything that isnt hot as. well, no. i dont think ive ever been anywhere that eats as much as icecream as they do here! 4. this isnt something funny about denmark, but more about my lack of being able ... read more

Hello. This is my first entry for a blog on TravelBlog. I'll quickly tell a bit' about myself: I'm a 16 years old girl - ½ dane ½ italian. I speak danish, italian, english, and a bit' of spanish, french and german. I simply love to travel - but as a student, I don't have the money. So my first trip will be in the woods 5 km from where I live. I live in Denmark - nearby Silkeborg. They have the greatest woods and rivers. Travelling means a lot to me, it helps me to move on. I've had some personal issues, that I wanna solve asap! So I'm planning to go on a 3 days long trip alone in the woods. I'm planning a survivor camp - which will consist on walking, enjoying nature. ... read more

Now that the basement in Svanholm is almost finished Im finally starting to get some alternative types of work. I spent my Monday working behind a tractor in a field in a giant machine with a few other Svanholmers as we sorted between vegetables and rocks. It sounds bad but it was actually fairly enjoyable. We had a radio hooked up inside the machine and the two folks I was working with spoke great English and asked me almost everything you could want to know about Canada. Time went by fast. For the past 3 days Ive been working in a room that is covered almost top to bottom in dust. Anybody who tries to light a cigarette in this place would likely have their body picked up somewhere in Sweden. The room has an ogger ... read more

DENMARK 2009 Thursday 29/01/09 I arrived in Denmark on Sunday. Since arriving, I have travelled across the country to Jutland, been to school, attended a Rotary meeting, tasted traditional Danish food such as Ponzi (a sausage bought from a street stall which is eaten with toasted bread- note the sausage doesn’t go inside the bread), and been shopping among other things. The school I am attending is Ordrup Gymnasium and is an old but pretty school. The students are friendly but it is an effort for them to speak English and because I can’t speak Danish yet, I don’t participate in most conversations at school. Subsequently, school is really boring and I still haven’t lasted a whole day, instead leaving at lunchtime and other breaks to go home and sleep (I’m still a bit jetlagged). The ... read more

Today I'm not really doing anything, so I thought I'd update my blog. I slept in pretty late today. Well, I got up at like 10, which is not late for me, but which I think is late for a baker and his wife. There was no one at home (there was a note saying they were at the bakery) so I sorted my own breakfast out :D How special am I? Yesterday, I went to my first Danish Rotary meeting. It was basiclly the same as in Australia. People talked, we ate dinner, we sung a song, and it was over. Afterwards Lens, who is my councillor over here, took me to a handball game. I didn't even really know what it was until then, but it's like the most popular sport in Denmark. They ... read more

Hi everybody! Things in Denmark are still going well. I just recieved my new computer and Ive been spending the last few days playing new computer games and downloading some Danish movies. The days are slowly getting longer and everyone around the farm is talking about the summer. Sunshine and swimming. In the winter it is mostly gray and partly rainy with a constant breeze. I dont mind it though. As longas the bakeries stay open and I get to have frekedilla every few days, the gray weather wont bother me. Learning Danish is still going slowly as peoples English in Denmark is just unbelievalble and people really love to speak English whenever they get the chance. Most of their TV programs are from the US or Britain with Danish subtitles, the same with their movies. ... read more

So I’ve finally left!! I’m writing this on the plane on the way to Bankok, on my brand new laptop. I don’t expect I’ll be posting this until I actually get to Denmark. Saying goodbye was not as traumatic as I thought it would be. I’m so so sad at having to leave, but there wasn’t much time to cry or whatever at the airport - I had to board the plane. There is no in-flight entertainment so I’ve been entertaining myself by playing ds (YAY thank you Linley, Noelle, Laura and Channe), reading the letter that Austen gave me before I left (thank you, it was lovely) and drawing a picture on Paint. Austen suggested drawing zombies if I get bored, since that’s what he does. And it was actually pretty fun :P It turns ... read more
