Becca and I have arrived in Prague after traveling through Dresden and Frankfurt.  There is definatly a certain magic to the city... also a certain fakeness to it.  You get the feel that no-one actually lives in the city center..it's all tourists.  Despite this Prague is really easy to enjoy.  And the beer is so cheap in the czech republic..  I have never found a half liter of beer over a US dollar and this in in bars and restaraunts. The food is also plentlyful and cheap.  Just don't go see black light theature because it's horribly bad.  ... read more

Hello again, Where did we leave off last time? Oh yes, 6:00 am, in the park with a reformed heroine addict, thinking about breakfast. After breakfast Anni decided she had to leave. Not really sure where she was going, but she went none the less. We decided that it was about time to see the city, so we walked around. A lot. Between the five of us we spent over 250 man hours walking around Prague, which was great. Some cities have many interesting things, but it is boring trying to get from one place to another. Not Prague. Every where we went we saw something interesting. And everywhere we went Sal(and everyone else, but especially Sal) feel asleep at random times and in random places. At this point, we had endured a solid week of ... read more

So, having finished school at University College Utrecht(passed with flying colors by the way), it was time to head out into the world and see what their was to see. And where better for an American to begin his journey than Prague, home to more ridiculously drunken Americans and Brits than anywhere else in the world, outside of America and Britain of course. Here is how it went down(NOTE: I wrote these as emails while doing the traveling, so outside of the intro these are basically copied and pasted, with some ever so slight proofreading, mainly to protect the innocent who will be reading this and guilty who lived it. Proceed.) Our story begins on a beautiful Sunday morning in Utrecht, the Netherlands. I arise at 9:00 in the morning to prepare for the previously discussed ... read more

A fourty minute train ride from Prague is Castle Karlstejn. The lonely planet guide mentioned fairy tale, and it lived up to the description. Perching on the top of a hill, looming over a village, with flags rustling in the wind. I've never seen a castle as picturesque, though Warwick Castle England was very impressive. The castle was built in the 14th century, and was home to Charles IV, and his 4 wives. For 200Kc (£4) a tour takes you around most of the castle, unfortunately for us, the Chapel of the Holy Rood is closed to visitors except in July - September. The guided tour around the inhabited part was impressive enough. So things I remember: Being a princess/queen was not all it that it is cut out to be. Lots of child bearing and ... read more

A short trip away with my sister has taken us to Prague. 12 hours train ride from Pecs, changing at Budapest. The city of Prague is truely beautiful. The central square, Old Town Square, is full of restaurants, and cafes, and surrounded by magnificently lit churches. These aren't the cheapest place to eat - most of the prices are double what you can pay a kilometer further away, but the square is the place to be as a tourist. Talking of tourists, I've not seen as greater concentration of tourists in one place since I was in London. The streets are heaving with tourists and the street vendors, cafes, pavement tables that go hand in hand with them. On the negative side, groups of drunken twenty something British guys wander the streets like packs of hyeanas, ... read more

During my time in university, I spent four months studying at Charles University in the Czech Republic. Unfortunately, I didn’t get into digital photography or blogging until after my time there. So, while I can’t share my favorite pictures or remember ever detail of this city, I would like to share my experiences and thoughts on how a backpacker could do Prague justice. The first part can be found in any old guide book, with my twist on it, but the latter part is where you can escape the crowds. I hope this can help guide travelers as they see this city I loved! Prague has plenty of tourist sites, which are definitely worth visiting. One of the most famous is the Old Town Square, with the beautiful cathedrals and astronomical clock. However, the majesty of ... read more

It was my 21st birthday and I wanted to celebrate, I had heard about Prague and the cheap alcohol and good night life and thought “Why not”, I knew it would be cold when we were going but had no idea how cold, on average it was around minus 30C every day, MINUS 30C! That is beyond cold. When we landed a guy asked us if we wanted a taxi, he seemed nice enough (‘seemed’ being the key word) so we got into his cab, on the way to his taxi we were talking and he was joking around with us, once we were all in he said “You are nice guys I will not put the meter on and only charge you 450 Koruny (around £15) to your hotel” what a nice guy that works ... read more

One can tell whether he’s in an Eastern European country by riding the train. In contrast to its western counterpart, trains from Nürnberg in Germany to Prague is an older train with no air conditioner; although there was no delay or major problems, you can tell that they could replace the rails so that the ride would be a smoother, efficient, and faster one. At least this is what I think. The six hour Czech train ride turned out to be an interesting one. Immigration takes place on the train, with two sets of immigration officers screening through the train completely. The first set was two burly and intimidated German officers in their uniform that reminds me of Nazi officers, stamping out everybody’s passports with the EU-Germany exit stamp. Behind them were two Czech Immigration officers ... read more
