And we love it here. We are thinking now we may just cut out Croatia and stay here. We are in a beautiful little Pension with climbing roses and sunshine and a little garden terrace overlooking the painted church tower. The food here is good and cheap, and although the weather may be getting a little stormy, it is warm enough to float down the river on intertubes. It is just the kind of lazy, warm, relaxed atmosphere we needed after all those cities. Not to mention it is an outdoor lover's paradise. There are bike rides we can take all over lower Bohemia, there is a medieval castle in town, which the river makes a U around and we may even go horseback riding tomorrow! Here are a few pictures. ... read more

Česky Krumlov is definitely one of the most picturesque sites we have ever visited. Česky Krumlov is a charming medieval town located in southern Czech Republic near the Austrian border. Sitting amidst the Vltava River, this quaint town boasts an abundance of culture, history, and adventure, and good food and beer. You can wander aimlessly through the cobblestone, traffic free streets and enjoy the colorful houses that line them. Eating or just enjoying a drink at one of its many restaurants is truly a treat as many of them have outdoor patios, which overlook postcard views of the town and castle. Česky Krumlov means Czech or Bohemian (Česky) and crooked meadow (Krumlov). The town was first mentioned in documents about 1253, although the oldest proof of existence dates back to around 4000 B.C.. Like most of ... read more

Well I can see why this place is a big stop for backpackers. Its a break stop. Somewhere to slow down an listen to the birds for a while an appreciate being in a little town miles away from anywhere. Only took about 3hrs to get here from Prague an stopped outside the village as the bus wouldnt fit through all its little cobbled streets. Saw a bunch of frinds that i was talking about last blog, kind of wished i had travelled here with them. There was only about 10 of us this time that got off here so will be less of a party atmosphere which kind of suits the town. Was a dreadful day when we arrived from 27 to 15 maximums in two days ? so just just chilled out at ... read more

Cesky Krumlov is so beautiful and romantic its impossible to try to describe. One of the prettiest towns we've even been to. Would recommed anybody to visit. I'm sure it can be overrun with tourists in the summer, we did see a few groups of japanese clicking their way along the streets, but generaly the town had a lovely laid back atmosphere. We can see why its a popular hangout spot for backpackers. Would love to return.... read more

This past weekend many of us went south to Bohemia and visited a UNESCO heritage site, the town of Cesky Krumlov. On the way we stopped in a town called, I think, Pilzn, where Pilsner Urquell is headquartered. We actually spent a night in Pilzen, which has nothing really going on except the brewery. We stayed in the "Hotel Continental" which I have learned is code for "Commie hotel trying to pose as classy Western Hotel" in Eastern Europe. It was as bizarre as most of them are--it does have this air of regalty to it, sort of, except inside it's a mess of socialist coldness, gaudy chandeliers, red carpet on the steps....my girlfriend commented the moment we went down the hallway where the rooms are, "It reminds me of a concentation camp here". The ... read more

Today we went on a day trip from Prague to Cesky Krumlov, a city that has not changed much since the Renaissance. You enter the town through, or under rather, the castle gate and immediatly in front of you is a small medieval town. The Vltava, the same river that runs through Prague, also passes through Cesky Krumlov, only its much smaller and calmer. There are a ton of little cafes and restuarants, the whole town is really enchanting. The buildings are all pretty much original and it made it much easier to picture exactly what the Renaissance town would look like, but still difficult to picture the people bustling about the town. I tried to imagine the stereotypical "barmaid wench" fetching water from the well and the peddlers in the main square trying to hawk ... read more

In just a short time this little town in South Bohemia has been visited by 2 Aussies and an American and an Englishman who happens to live in the same building as we do. Hows that for being a little peculiar...The town has a small population of Czechs ( 2000 ),2 Mongolians and a handful of Veitnamese which makes it quite an interesting mix. Roberto came over fromSydney to visit for 10days, he saw quite a bit in 10days, Prague, Pocatky, Cesky Krumlov, Telc, a Hockey match , Tabor. We walked around Prague making frequent pitstops at local Czech bars drinking hot wine or hot rum...grog and svarak, Roberto came to love these drinks. We were on the end of Winter, although it didnt snow whilst he was here, it was still around 5-12Degrees. Prague Council are ... read more

From Dresden we planned to travel to the Czech Republic, stopping en route for a day in Saxon Switzerland National Park. We left Dresden early and caught the trian to Rathen, a small village right in the middle of the national park. We had hoped to dump our bags somewhere in the village so that we could explore the hills behind the village, but when we got off the train the station was deserted and all the shops, restaurants and hotels were closed (grrrr to closing out of season). We headed to the small chain ferry to take us to the far side of the river Elbe where there seemed to be more signs of life. We attempted to ask the ferry driver if there was a left-luggage anywhere nearby, but he just grunted and repeatedly ... read more

Southern Bohemia is its location and we went for a short trip with my mate Jason who is 5th generation Floridian! From USA. Traditional Czech food at Xmas time is fried carp and potato salad, it is very tasty and after learning about how they harvest the fish in South Bohemia, you begin to appreciate the carp, although in Australia carp is a pest, in Czech Republic it is the only fish, the Xmas lunch which every Czech looks forward to. Xmas cake is also an essential food item to indulge in over the festive season. A sweet cake which is plated and then baked. similair to a scone, it has raisons and almonds too.
