Izakaya kiyakusama Summer Fishing Trip. Izakaya is the name given to small Japanese eateries and bars. Japan is full of them. Normally frequented by grandmas and grandpas. They come here to enjoy each others company, eat and drink cheap nosh and sing old Japnese songs...Enka. Karoke. Although students, young folk and salary men visit them too as they are affordable . Its lovely actually. I was fortunate enough to find a nice little Izakaya place about 30mins by bike from Chubu. Truth be told I was bored one day, went out to buy a bicycle and after finding a real el cheapo 2nd hand bicycle went searching for a place to eat. I was starving! I needed some beef, hadnt had beef for so long. In mid May, still adjusting to Japanese lifestyle , for the first ... read more

On 30th July every year eel is eaten. Its the height of Summer, humid and hot. Averaging 35-38 degrees. Everybody as usual works hard from the early hours until the late evenings. They walk around with towels around their necks to wipe the perspiration dripping from their faces, arms and neck. Its a time to take care as its easy to become sick walking in and out of air conditioned super markets, department stores and office buildings and working hard. Eel is eaten because its nutrious and provides stamina during the months of summer. I took a liking to it. In fact when I visited Tokyo again I found the best restuarant where they serve it all year round. In Asakusa!, right near the Sensoji Temple area. Here I meet with my Hong Kong friends in ... read more

Sumo dates back some 1500 years ago and it was more like a religion in the sense that it was performed as a ritual dedicated to the gods with dancing and prayer. Sumo has always been popular and even more so now because of its origins and history. There are even foriegn wrestlers competing, infact the grand sumo champion (YOKOZUNO) is Mongolian , ASASHYORYU and in 2nd place (OZEKI) is a Bulgarian. My favourite...KOTOSHUU! The foreign exchange program allowed all the students to go and see one of the matches. Nagoya Basho is a very famous known for its high level of competitveness, it runs through the summer season at its peak for 14 days. We got to see some of the best of the best wrestlers. It was definetly one of the most thrilling live ... read more

As a foreign student, the University which I am attending here in Nagoya, Chubu, invariably ask students to volunteer their time by visiting local primary schools and exchange culture, local games and everyday expressions with the school kids. I really enjoyed this part of the program, the kids were so excited and glad to meet a foreigner and especially from Australia, I am the only Australian student volunteer at the moment, whilst there are many Koreans, Chinese, Phillipinos and Indians, Australia is a popluar place to hear and know about. Everything is the opposite and eveything is unique and unheard of. The kids were so charming, I was surprised to see they all wore a T-shirt with either The Gold Coast, Sydney or Cairns printed on it, and least we forget the famous Koala and Kangaroo ... read more

http://www.travelblog.org/Asia/Japan/nagoya/blog-152837.html のキャッシュです。 Traditional Japanese food is quite healthy, sashimi, and sushi which is raw fish with rice and soy sauce or wasabi (green paste - hot chilli-like flavour). The other type of Japanese food is always fried food, quick to cook and cheap and not necessarily healthy. The latter is the type of food provided by the university cafeteria. Fried pork, yakitori, sukiyaki, tempura udon noodles and rice. I went to a sushi restuarant with my new Japanese friends, Hiro and Aki, they took me to a place in Nishi, a local sushi bar, very good, cheap and healthy. 500yen each. I ate sashimi which was delicious, aji and katsudo it was called, I had Nagoya sushi roll which is fried pork pieces wrapped in rice and seaweed paper (sushi). I ate udon noodles, steamed ... read more

http://www.travelblog.org/Asia/Japan/nagoya/Sakae/blog-152829.html のキャッシュです。 Nagoya is a castle city and the 4th biggest after Tokyo, Yokohamma and Osaka. It is the centre of Japan. My university is about 30mins by train. It is a big city, 2.2 millipn people almost. Doesnt seem to look overcrowded compared to Sydney, but definetly compared to Pocatky. There are so many shops, big departments stores, resturants , bars and pachinko outlets. Pachinko is a gambling house, mostly frequented by Japanese men, they play the machines for hours winning, loosing, smoking cigarette after cigarette. Its very colourful and noisy inside. They gather sivler balls which are money tokens to play with. I didnt play it, wouldnt know how to be honest, I think I prefer the good old pokies at the Newtown RSL. There are vending machines everywhere here, everywhere and anywhere, ... read more

As part of the exchange program all the students participate and learn about Japanese culture. Tea ceremony or Sado as it is called in Japan. Our teacher or sensei is a master in the arts of Japanese. The Teahouse or chashitsu is a quiet place, surrounded by an wonderfully maintained garden, a little bridge and pond. Before entering the chaishitsu you have to rinse your hands and mouth, this is also typical before entering a shrine. The feeling is similiar to a temple or church. People come here to relax, the atmosphere is calming and to practice tea ceremony. It demands alot of patience as it takes time to complete all the necessary steps of making tea. Also typical Japanese sit on their legs for about 1hour, we were spared the pain and permitted to sit ... read more
