Hello everyone! First up we just wanted to say thank you again to all our friends and family who made our wedding celebrations so special. Now we are off on our honeymoon trip to Eastern Europe and we hope you enjoy reading all the fun details! Well it has been quite a first week of our eastern European adventure. As we board our train for Vienna let us share some highlights of our time in the Czech Republic. Firstly some initial impressions: (1) Czechs love flowers. It is not a passing thing. Every cottage was a riot of spring colour and even the grimmest of soviet era concrete apartment blocks had window boxes of pansies and petunias and every village however tiny had a nursery. It was quite a powerful sign of optimism. (2) Czechs love ... read more

Teplice (Day 10-11) May 28-29 Another series of train journeys but in reverse this time with increasing smaller trains, This journey took us to Teplice in the north of the Czech republic. Our final two trains were shared with two school groups heading off for a few days camping, which made for a rather packed train. When we arrived we headed off to our guesthouse, following one group for a while but they headed in a different direction luckily for us. Our ten minute walk took us to a lovely guest house set in a valley in this small country area. We headed up the hill for lunch before walking through the national parks which were home to some unusual rock formations. The weather had turned and the rain gradually became heavier, but we decided to ... read more

As you can see, I've given up on trying to come up with different tags to go along with the city names. Anyway, got there in the evening and my hosts picked me up. the don't live in Hradec Kralove but in a little village outside called Bukovina - about 15 mins away maybe? The were really nice and got me thinking about hitch hiking although I'd be more tmepted to do it in better weather conditions. The also took me to their local pub which was nice. I had some local smoked meat and cheese which was really good. The also introduced me to more types of cheese the next morning before droppin gme off at the city center. I only spent a very short time with them but it was nice :) I got ... read more

hello everyone today is a sad day. we are beginning to come to the realisation that we may have been duped into buying our rail passes from a phoney website. basically, the tickets, which we should have received by yesterday still are to arrive and we are quickly losing travel time. it is pretty upsetting to think that we are not going to make it to turkey, which was supposed to be the point of the trip. however, we both had a discussion about the situation and have decided to get on with the trip regardless. therefore we have reverted to the aforementioned plan b; germany and poland, which hopefully should prove just as exciting and interesting. the format is to leave the czech republic today and take a train into germany to dresden. at dresden ... read more

This morning ladies and gentlemen, I passed my driving theory exam and then, rather unexpectedly, also completed my driving test due to my lack of knowledge of the Czech language. The day began very early, at about 0530, and I moved from my room to the living room to have a read through and understand more traffic situations especially the diamond shaped sign with a yellow square which still had the power to bewilder me. My study had been half hearted but I had remembered stuff from the translation and I reasoned that a lot of stuff was simple common sense. With that I had a shower and went off to meet my translator, Eva. As she was late I ended up meeting her at the driving place itself where my instructor had turned up with ... read more

this is our last night in hradec, inshallah. yusuf has his theory test at 0730 tomorrow morning (czechs start early) and we are hoping to be out of the city by 11am-ish. he is currently revising elsewhere in the faculty. the current problem we have is that our inter rail tickets have not arrived yet. they were supposed to arrive today or tomorrow morning; by secure delivery and obviously without them we cannot start the trip. therefore we have decided to figure an alternative route through poland and germany if we cannot get the tickets in time. however ideally, we want to make it to istanbul. another reason i really want to get there is to cross the bosphorus strait. if you dont know, this is the strip of water that divides istanbul into thrace (West) ... read more

You might be wondering where im blogging from at the moment, so i'll tell you. im in fair sized computer room of the campus at the medical faculty. there is a bust of Purkinje, the man behind the eponymous Purkinje fibres of the heart. he was czech apparently yusuf informs. currently behind me there are 2, perhaps 1st or 2nd year indian students who should be reading their anatomy books which are open in front of them, but both are watching bollywood films from use of their headphones. there is thunder and lightning outside. we dont have far to walk but im beginning to regret the basic travel insurance i bought. if i die (inshallah i wont) but if i do, im worth 5 grand. youre all welcome to at least half a grand each. peace ... read more

After being pampered and coddled for 19 days with my parents and a subsequent 3 days with Jon, I got on a train and rode east for Hradec Kralove where I got to be pampered and coddled some more by Matt who is on a business contract out in this part of Czech. Why is everyone here? Because it really is that good. Admittedly, of the week I was out there, I only spent one afternoon in Hradec Kralove itself and another visiting nearby Kuneticka Hora Castle and driving through the countryside. A couple days were spent in R&R at the swank golf resort where Matt is staying, while over the weekend we took the plunge and drove to Krakow for a solid dose of WWII history (see next entry). That said, Hradec Kralove is a ... read more
