Where am I????? Do you remember me telling you about the guy who walked with us to our apartment last night? Well, I ran into him on my way to the bus stop this morning. We started chatting and he ensured me that the #27 bus went to the terminal HD (which is where I needed to go). #27 just happened to be the bus that he was taking as well (no small coincidence). So, we got on the bus together and chatted until it his stop. It was only after this that I really studied the map and learned that this bus did NOT go to the terminal HD! Great!!! L I got off at the last stop because I had to get off there. I was in the middle of nowhere and it was ... read more

This morning was a lot smoother than yesterday! I was able to make breakfast without any major hassles and then took a hot bath. Ava and I went to the shopping center to pick up more hangers and a few convenience items. Of course, she wanted to ride the animals and the train and have ice cream. Since they are all so cheap, I let her have her way. While we were shopping, mom cleaned the apartment and it looks much better now. She really did a great job! I still have to figure out where to put little items, as there are no little drawers in the desks or “dressers”. Olga stopped by today and brought pots, pans, cups, saucers, and a few other items. I’m glad because now we don’t have to use the ... read more

I woke up this morning with aching feet (darn heels) and sore shoulders from the flight over. Although I felt rested, it was very clear that I hadn’t eaten since lunch and was very hungry. I knew there was a supermarket next to the apartment, and hoped I could piece together some sort of breakfast quickly. I bought some bananas, yoghurt, pancake mix, mixed berry jelly, bread, eggs, and a painting book for Ava that contained paints. At the counter, the cashier picked up the bananas and started asking me a question. I pointed to where I got the bananas from, but that was apparently not her question because she kept talking. I told her that I only speak English and she just kept talking with the bananas in her hand. I made a hand signals ... read more

“Mom, I want to go to the Czech!” “Ava, we’re IN the Czech.” I tried to explain to Ava, who had thrown herself down in the middle of the apartment floor. My little girl was exhausted, and had every right to have a breakdown. She slept for 5 hours on the flight from Detroit to Amsterdam. It was only a 7 1/2 hour flight, so I thought this was pretty good. My mom slept almost an hour at the end of the flight and I slept a whopping…. Not at all. The flight went by quickly, and I tried everything to sleep, but I couldn’t sleep. We arrived in Amsterdam and realized we had to make it through their aggressive security and all the way across the airport in approximately 45 minutes. If you’ve ever been ... read more

It’s Friday morning and we’re on our way to Prague. I haven’t had time to blog this week, but I’m ok with that. Unfortunately, Hradec was hit with snow that started on Monday morning and continued through Tuesday night. This week, I felt blissfully lost for most of the week. I took the wrong bus on Tuesday morning and was late for my meeting with Pavla. To make matters worse, I walked out of the apartment without my phone, so I couldn’t text her to let her know I would be late. I also forgot about a few things I was supposed to have done this week (lesson preparation) and felt pretty “loserish” about it. I feel like I made up for it with a few great lessons. Jayna and Katka were really supportive this week ... read more

Ahhh… that smell is the same worldwide. Middle schoolers. It hits me like a wall when I walk into the building with Pavla. After meeting the Dean of Univerzita Hradec Králové and receiving my student ID, Pavla brought me here. It has all the makings of a typical American middle school; student paintings on the wall, hallways with lots of doors, and lots of awkward students roaming the halls on their way to class. We walked into the teachers’ lounge, which is very nice, and met Jane. She is a lovely 40something with blonde hair, blue eyes, and a warm smile. Jane’s ninth grade class is rumored to be exceptional and I have been given the honor of working with them for my practicum. We chat a bit about the students and I am given a ... read more

As my train pulls into Prague, I watch the thick, overhanging clouds looming above the historic Bohemian city with concern. They obstruct the sun, bring rain, potentially spoiling the mood for everybody. Not the best conditions for a three-day music festival. Music? Indeed. I'm on my way to the 14th annual Obscene Extreme Festival. As the name suggests, this is not gonna be your run-of-the-mill summer rock festival with the occasional hard rock or heavy metal band thrown into the equation. What awaits me is three days of aural assault and straight up brutality. A closer look at the running order reveals band names like Gutalax, Human Scum, Splattered Mermaids, Vomitory, Necromorph, Bowelfuck, Rottenness, Vulvectomy and Sublime Cadaveric Decomposition. The genre these bands belong to could be roughly described as grindcore, although there are a million ... read more

The average Czech person loves the outdoors nearly as much as their beer. When asked about the weekend, nearly every one of my students – except one group whose extra-curricular activities are harder to get out of them than secrets out of a dead person – will inevitably answer (wrongly but endearingly) ‘we were in the nature’ – a stock Czenglish phrase which is the equivalent of the Germans ‘making a party’. The extent to which the Czech’s love their outdoor sports is evident no more obviously than on the ski slopes and ice skating rinks. As the visibly English skaters lurch around the ice rink with the smoothness of Frankenstein’s monster or precariously wind their way down the slopes there are inevitably hundreds of six year old kids doing figure-of-eights around them making these despondent ... read more
