Voila, dit zal dan de laatste blog zijn voordat we vertrekken. Time flies by….!

"Do you mean I can have 4 days off?" I said to my boss after double checking the roster. Sounds good to me I thought, perfect time to get away for a couple of days. After looking around at my options I decided to take the Eurostar to Belgium for 4 days. Some chocolate, beer and waffles would do me nicely. So after spending Thursday evening with my friends in London (also for the last time at our house in Avenue Rd), I boarded the early Friday morning service from London to Brussels where I then connected on a northbound train to Antwerp. My first impressions were obviously "grand" after arriving in the magnificent Central Station. Wow, what an impressive building. The "OLD EUROPE" feel was balanced with an Art Deco lego block with the letter ... read more

I HAD to visit this VAN GOGH museum. It was part of the origional plans of this trip so I couldnt leave town without that. But that just meant I couldnt catch a train out of Amsterdam till later on in the afternoon. I checked it out and the museum was open at 10am. Ah it was fine I could just go back to the hostel and hang out for abit and maybe get some breaky. Problem was it was raining. Pissing rain actually. As soon as I left the station from my slumber!! I didnt bring an umbrella for space reasons. I figured I would be fine with just a rain jacket. NOPE. Best thing to do with the rain is keep it the hell away from you. I walked towards the hostel to go ... read more

Antwerp, Belgium July 8-10 I caught an early evening train to Antwerp from Lille and arrived to my host’s apartment around 8pm. I got a bit lost on the way, but that tends to happen quite often in new cities. Riet was immediately very welcoming and easy to talk to. I could tell we’d get along great. After dropping off my load at her place, we walked a short distance into the center of town and went to a bar where there was a good local rock group playing. We’d arrived a bit late, and it was completely packed to the door with people. We squeezed our way in and grabbed a couple of drinks. I of course got my first Belgian Trappist Ale on tap!! I got Orval, which was served in traditional Belgian fashion, ... read more

De Verscholentuin Antwerp, Belgium Thursday, July 2 2009 Today has been an emotional rollercoaster, so bear with me on this one. I thought I should chronicle what I did on my first day, just to keep you up to date on the difference between the farms. First of all, it looks like I'll have some company here shortly. There are a few otehr WWOOFers who want to show up here soon, so I might be moving out of the caravan and into a van that they've converted into a room. Works for me. Just so long as they don't try to put me in the treehouse (yes, a literal one room house in the trees...but the ladder is a bit frightening). I told 'em I'd stay for around 3 weeks, which is about the median for ... read more

De Verscholentuin Antwerp, Belgium Wednesday, July 1 2009 Some days I just don't know what to do with myself. Today I traveled from Amsterdam to Antwerp and met Luc, one of the two owners of De Verscholentuin. That's the name of Luc and Lous's yoga and meditation studio. I suppose I should have asked more questions (I had set this up before writing my guide for the first time WWOOFer), because I was expecting something totally different. I'm lying here in a caravan (that's a small tow camper for me and you) that I've just finally gotten some fresh air into. It had been closed up for 3 weeks since two girls from Japan had WWOOFed here. Anyway, the place..it's small. The studio holds perhaps 12-14 people, and is mainly rented out to outside groups who ... read more

... read more

Today we left Rotterdam and took the train to Antwerp for a short day trip. It's a great place to just walk around and just take it in. We walked from the central station to the waterfront. The archetecture is beautiful, and the shopping abundant (unfortunately we weren't really there for that). We came across a few markets, including a little flea market in a square that had a lot of interesting memorabilia. It was a really nice time, but we cut it a little short to make our way to Bruges. ... read more

We left Brugge early in the morning on Wedensday, June 3, taking the local Brugge bus from the Bariseele to the train station, and then the quick 80 minute train ride to Antwerp. The weather had turned much cooler, but we still wore shorts but this time with a sweatshirt. Antwerp is not as immediately apppealing as Brugge in the "cuteness" sense. It is about four times the size, and its center is a mix of newer and pold buildings. There remain several wonderful churches and a large collection of art (featuring Rubens) is scattered around town. We spent the first day wandering around the center of the city, stopping at Ruben's house, several of the old churches, and had a nice lunch sitting outdoors on a lovely square. The ambiance was immeasureably aided by the ... read more
