I hope this all finds you well & enjoying a Thanksgiving meal- turkey, mashed potatoes, home-made cranberries, pumpkin pie... ahh I'm a little (alot) jealous!! The last few days have been a little cold & wet, but good. I haven't got caught in the rain, but haven't seen the sun since I have been here. Ahh the beauty of cloudy, cold europe. I have been spending my time going to all sorts of different shops- searching out all the local fashion designers collections.... which has brought me to all different corners of Antwerp. For those of you who know what shopping in a crowded Barney's or Bergdorf's on a sunday afternoon trying to see the latest this is a much more pleasant experience! I am able to see the cloths, no crowds- such a great experience! ... read more

Hello all! Well I don't have any fun pictures to upload yet, but I arrived in Belgium yesterday. My flights were ok; my Philadelphia to Brussels was delayed though and I arrived in Antwerp a little later than expected. While walking to my relatives house (who I am staying with while I'm here) I actually ran into Manu- and he let me know he left the keys with the neighbor for me to get in. Pure luck that I ran into him- kinda crazy. I hope that this finds you all well & when I have more to report I will! Also, for those who have left a message- thank you so much! I am so happy to share this journey with you! Cheers Ida... read more

31/10/08 We got up at 7:30am for breakfast and too leave the house at 8am to make it on the 9am train to Antwerp. I had gotten the tickets from Amsterdam to Antwerp at a special rate for the weekend for 34.60euros each return. We could travel anytime on Friday, Saturday or Sunday and return anytime on Sunday. So thanks to me we missed the train I intended for us to catch by 5 minutes (the 8:56am to Antwerp) and ended up getting the 9:56am. We nearly got on the wrong train too - well it was going to Antwerp but a special train that you needed to book and by chance one of the ladies mentioned to us on the train that you needed to have specially booked a train ticket on this seat to ... read more

There's something special about touring, shopping, visiting & living the Antwerp experience with bona fide Antwerpenaren :) It's taken me years to get to know this city & it's people. Antwerp is so multifaceted, has so much to offer, there's so much to tell. I'm going to break it down into bite sized pieces & try to stick with the history & fun of each entry in a limited style. The photo of the elephant, in my last entry, is part of the Elephant Parade. There are 71 elephant statues distributed all over the city of Antwerp until the 1st wk of November. These statues, designed by dozens of Belgian & Thai artists, are intended to raise awareness of the plight of the Asian elephant. Bernaerts will auction the statues off & the finances raised will ... read more

There was a point at the end of this summer when I realised how very special my last night in Prague was - retiring from the unbearably hot and noisy hostel dormitory to surrender sleep for a second night in a row and dance, for 3 straight hours at that nightclub to my preferred strand of tech house getting the high-energy reception it deserves. This rather inspired me to try and see Silicone Soul live as soon as I can, since I'd been listening to their mixtapes since about last November and hence came my love of tech house. Their gigs calendar offered two choices of where to go - Antwerp or Glasgow, and after realising the former was a free entry club and that I could still get cheapo Eurostar tickets for £24.50 each way, ... read more

G'day The first thing I noticed about Belgium, was that it is incredibly flat, the second thing was that were a few strange things about. This started as soon as we landed, after the rather normal straight forward landing, the entire plane burst into applause. But then maybe that was because we were flying Turkish Airlines? Philippe was there to greet us at Brussels airport, and whisked us away in his car to his home, just outside of Antwerp. Philippe had taken the week off work to tour us around Belgium and did a wonderful job of playing tour guide, navigator, host and personal translator for the entire week. The slight change in weather (37 degrees in Istanbul, and Belgium was 14) was a little much for Sarah and I. But despite the cold, Antwerp was ... read more

Our whistle-stop tour of Belgium ended with a brief trip to Antwerp-on realising our train to Amsterdam went through the city, we couldn't resist stopping off there to see the location of Rob Lee's famous hat-trick of headers in NUFC's return to European football in 1994 (well, famous to people in Newcastle, anyway!) ;o) Our train was at 7:30am and it was a double-decker, which I found quite exciting! Why don't we have them in England?! We were slightly delayed, arriving in Antwerp at 8:15am, and so after storing our luggage, it was a rush into the city to see what we could. First of all though, we were starving, and on spotting a McDonalds on Kaiserlei on the way out of the station, we couldn't resist a trip in for a cheap breakfast. I wasn't ... read more
