Ok! So it's Monday the 22nd now, but since I didn't have internet for the second half of the trip I'm just writing theses blogs now! I got back yesterday. Let's go back in time and pick up where we left off........ So Sarah and I woke up really early to go and check out the goat farm and "midget golf" only to be completely foiled. We took the bus to a super random part of town, but the walking directions that the bus website had given Sarah didn't match up with where we were at all. We walked around in the freezing cold and snow for a while, not seeing where we were, and eventually gave up on our dreams of seeing the 7 famous goats at the farm and the 100 different types of ... read more

Hopla. En avant! ... read more

Yesterday I took the train to Antwerp to go to the Christmas market and to do some shopping. Usually all the shops are closed in Belgium on Sunday, but the two Sundays before Christmas, they open them for shopping. I was in luck because Antwerp is known as the big shopping (especially for diamonds) city in Belgium! The Antwerp Central Station, also known as the Railway Cathedral, was built in 1905 and looks like a bascilica with high marble columns and an elegant staircase. The platform is 35 meters high and only consists of glass and metalwork. It was the most beautiful station I have ever seen! I first walked down the main shopping street in Antwerp, the Meir, where there were lots of great shops and they were all in beautiful historic buildings - the ... read more

Except there were no real hills in Antwerp... And I did not see an ant... Mosquitoes yes... The trip to Antwerp nearly wasnt.. After catching the Eurostar to Brussels, we proceeded to find the connecting to Antwerp, after much confusion we were ushered onto a train, only to be put in the first class cabin. We did not have first class tickets so I jumped off the train to have a better look.. Next thing I know the bells are ringing, Chris is screaming at me and the train was about to leave! Luckily, I managed to jump back onto the train and we rode to Antwerp in first class style.. After being picked up at the train station by Chris' Antwerp contact, we were lucky enough to be offered a tour around Antwerp that showed ... read more

From Shell: We were greeted in Amsterdam by Steve and things have got even better from there. Got into Holland at 10am, chatted with Steve and his mate Jan until the jet lag caught up, and then had a nanny nap while they went shopping for us - thanks guys. This meant that we then stayed up way too late but had a great dinner with Zeynep, Kevin and Jan. Next day we slept through our hangovers and met Marja's dad Aulis at the airport and then all drove to Antwerp in Belgium. Steve pre booked an apartment for us and said it was 'near the action'. We walked out of a carpark to be presented with the most staggering view of 15th century onwards guild buildings, with statues coated in gold leaf on every gable. ... read more

As some of you may already know I’ve actually just spent the 6-7 weeks camping out at a place in Antwerp (124 bed hostel). Two things lead me to this interesting situation, the first was a phone call whilst I was in Holland and the second was I needed a rest from travelling. Allow me to explain….. You see if you ever get the wonderful opportunity to go travelling for an extended period of time you’ll soon realise moving around all the time, exploring new places and watching your back when you’re travelling solo can be very tiring…. I know this is going to sound crazy and probably drum up some hate mail from a few of you but seriously… it’s really is hard work sometimes. Also as you may have noticed in my last few ... read more

Martin and I were fortunate to be in Antwerp for the 2nd Indian Customers vs RTD cricket match. A couple of training sessions before the day meant we actually got to touch a cricket ball and for me, a couple of swings of a cricket bat in the nets... Despite my duck, I managed not to let any balls pass me when fielding, but alas, didn't get to show them my Sandy's special flipper as I didn't get to bowl. At least I faced a ball though, Martin padded up and his batting partner faced three balls and was then out. That was the entire RTD team dismissed! We then had a fantastic dinner/dance hosted by the Indian Customers and overnight stay at a hotel on a lake. Martin and I chose to spend the following ... read more

23rd January: Incessant, driving rain, and a filthy windscreen, hamper progress to Antwerp. That, and searching diesel stations round Calais for the elusive heavy truck road tax needed for Belgium. I'm now back on the Tina Turner tour European leg - no White Cliffs of Dover again, for me, until early April. Bed at 3am. At 6.35, outside my truck window, a drunken colleague on this twenty-truck tour holds a loud, slurred, incoherent conversation. Then “Namibian Colin”, who shall feature regularly in this blog, accidentally blows his airhorn at 9 o'clock. When doing his daily sit-up getting out of bed, his bulky paunch catches the stalk on the steering column; he's simply too fat! 24th January: Terrible! Four bendy young honeys in miniskirts degrading themselves on stage...IN LEATHER. Yes, of course I watched the show. 'All ... read more
