this is written on the InterCity (IC) train from Anwerpen/Anvers to Amsterdam after I jumped on (just) at 3pm - having jumped off in Antwerpen/Anvers (so that is where the liqueur comes from - had one in Brugge - like yellow Chartreuse). Anyway headed off form the hotel Pantone, grabbed some pastires and yoghurt drink from the corner store just by the Hotel des Monnaies metro - unlike yesterday Sunday they had virtually run out of pastry things but got a couple of their last. All set for a little less than 3E - after the usual massive dinners I have been having the idea of payng the Pantone 15E for breakfast was quite ridiculous so def. did not take them up on it. The train was at 11.18 so notionally had enought time - but ... read more

Tonight is our last in Antwerp which is large and very cool city in the north east of Belgium. We’ve had a good time here - running in the Strada Park in the early morn, walking through the cobbled streets and squares, looking in the shops (mainly window shopping as many do not open early in the week or early in the day), gazing out at Scheldt River (see view back to the town from the river, pic 1) and eating of course! We had a particularly great meal at the Grand Cafe Horta on Monday night - mussels for me, salmon penne for A, washed down with a lovely Chablis. Today we took the train to Amsterdam to see a little of the Netherlands and to visit the Van Gogh Museum. Looking out from the ... read more

After an overnight stay in Dover (where we visited a great restaurant called The Allotment), we took a Norfolk Line ferry from Dover to Dunkirk. Driving from Dunkirk to Antwerp took just over an hour and was easy. The tricky bit was driving around Antwerp. I knew our hotel was somewhere near the Central Station - always an easy landmark to find in a city - but unfortunately there were roadworks right outside the Radisson Hotel where we were staying. This meant we couldn't turn directly into the road we needed but had to go round the block, get stuck in a traffic jam, avoid cars, pedestrians, cylists and trams! But eventually got to the hotel and checked in. This meant we had the afternoon and evening to explore Antwerp. For me, it felt like a ... read more

Back packers deserve more credit. I mean, they can fit their lives into one bag that then goes on their back. It has become easier to be a so-called backpacker in Europe, but it is still not nearly as easy as when I can have the luxury they call a suitcase. This morning we woke up to pack up our zip lock bags with clothes and stuff them into our backpacks. Every morning in Belgium, Carolyn has left out an amazing spread of food! I wonder if she does this everyday for the boys, because if she does, I think she is a saint. This morning we awoke to custard filled pastries, fresh rolls of bread, cheese, ham, coffee, espresso. You name it, it was probably on the table. Not looking forward to our NINE hour ... read more

A relaxed day in Antwerp. It was the first day in too long, that was were able to sleep past 8:00am. We moved quite slowly the entire morning, and didn’t make it to downtown Antwerp until 2pm. I had no idea what to expect from Antwerp, but it was soo cute! It was a very midevil little town, with a great story behind it. On the water’s edge, there is an old beautiful castle. As we walked through the castle Banjamin and Carolyn told us the history of Antwerp. The tale goes that a giant used to live in this castle. One man defeated the giant, cut off his hand, and threw it into the water. Where the hand fell in the water is where Antwerp poped up! All around the city there are hand chocolates, ... read more

Today got off to a slightly disappointing start as there were no croissants or pastries for breakfast! Things perked up, however, as we walked along the riverside to the train station, bound for Antwerp. As we neared the station Clare decided we were in the wrong place but I disagreed - it turned out I was right. However, my victory was short lived when I realised that the Interrail tickets required to get reduced reservation fees (or even fares free of charge) were not in my bag and I had left them back at the Hostel...1-1. Instead of trapesing all the way back to the Bauhaus we reluctantly forked out the 30 Euro charge for two returns, paid the grumpy man, and continued with a large dint in our daily budget. After leaving the very grand ... read more
