From Dubai we did a short sidetrip of one week to Oman. Short, but enough to see some highlights and get a taste of a country we probably would never visit otherwise. Oman is a wealthy country with a high living standard, and is still a very traditional muslim country: all men wear white jalabah's with traditional hats and the woman are dressed in black clothes with veils or burka's. Small mosks can be found on virtually every corner of the street. We can honestly say that Omani people are some of the most welcoming people we met on our trip. Locals are extremely happy to see you and are very helpful. They all want to have a chat with you to practise their English. Tourism in Oman is still in its infancy and most tourists ... read more

India, love it or hate it????

Aaaaaaaaah India. The Holy Land of mysticism. Where pilgrims take a bath in the Ganges with women doing the laundry a few meters further away. The land of the Taj Mahal and magnificent temples. Of colourfull women wrapped in sari's and heavily bearded men wearing turbands. Needless to say: we were full of expectation when we arrived in India. There is a saying about India that goes around between backpackers: “India, you love it or you hate it”. There is no road in between! Well, we still haven't figured out which way to swing: love it? Or hate it? Perhaps time will tell, but it is in any case a disturbingly thin line between the two. Yes, India is all of those lovely things above and much much more. But it's also the land of child ... read more

Okay, don't get confused: we are posting a blog about Cambodia but are allready some time in India now. We just couldn't find internet in India untill now. While we are posting this blog the teller reads “ 165 days on the road”. Pffew, it really doesn't seem that long! 154 days, mostly in the tropics, without any incident? Something was bound to happen sooner or later. And yes, Raf got dengue (or whatever it was) near the end of our stay in Laos and was running a high fever on Christmas day. Yes yes, and a Merry Fever to you too, thank you very much! We immediately went to the hospital the day after because the fever didn't go down. In the hospital they were thinking in the lines of malaria, dengue or lyme and ... read more

Happy Christmas holidays everybody! Not too cold there in Europe? ;-) We didn't get a white X-mas here, that's for sure! Instead, we had a relaxed ánd exciting trip in northern Laos..... Again we crossed a border on foot, this time from China to northern Laos. The first thing that struck us when we crossed the border was how poor Laos actually is. What a big difference with China! In the main cities of Laos standards are good (although you can't really speak of “cities”, they are basically big towns, even the capital). But in the more remote countryside the story is very different. For us, it felt like being in Papua all over again: people were dressed in rags and dirty clothes and we even saw some bare brested women in one poor village. Before ... read more

At the end of this blog you will know everything about: crazy chinese tourists crazy western hippies cheating temple monks (probably also crazy) crazy entrance fees and better: how to avoid them our first real case of sickness called “travellers fatigue” (us getting crazy?) our three highlights in China and how we went through the four seasons in four weeks time So, hmmm...where shall we start? We ended our last blog with the story about entering China. After entering we immediately headed for Kunming, a provincial city in the south-west of China. Kunming was quite a surprise. We had expected a sleepy provincial town (like we had seen some in our earlier visits to china, cfr. Bart's fourth visit and Raf's third to China) with it's occasional shopping malls, but still with the obligated old ladies ... read more

Hello, wanna buy something from me? That's what we heard some 100 times a day here in Vietnam. A quick review of what we did after Thailand : We visited only the north of Vietnam (2 weeks), and we were a little surprised of the touristic bomb that has exploded here. In some places there are more tourists then vietnamese it seems. Luckily we did only the north, considering the typhoon that blasted against the middle of the country about a week ago. A lot of travellers that wanted to go from north to south vietnam got stuck somewehere in between. But, as we escaped earthquakes in indonesia, duststorms in Australia, floodings in Papua and Sulawesi and god knows what else in other countries, we escaped this typhoon too. Our journey started in Hanoi : a ... read more

First a short note before we start: there are a lot of bloody pictures at the bottom of this page. Don't scroll further down if you can not stand blood.... Well, we have been in Thailand for only one week, but what a week. We spend most of our time in Phuket and a few days in Bangkok. Phuket is your standard touristic beach destination. You might as well go to Turkey for a beach holiday, you wouldn't notice the difference except that Thai people have these tiny eyes. It's also a place that was hit hard by the 2004 tsunami. Nowadays, you can not even notice there has ever been a tsunami at all. Everything has been rebuild and there are little reminders of the earlier tsunami. Except perhaps some warning signs on the beach ... read more

oftewel : "Toe kom mee naar snorkelland" voor onze allerliefste Belgskes! For some memories of good old times, click the video at the bottom. Its a hint at what we have been doing the last weeks and We have been humming this song quite a lot :-) We are now back in Asia and more precisely Indonesia. Yes, again Indonesia! We allready visited Java, Sulawesi and Papua earlier on our trip. Now we explored some smaller islands. Our quest after two months travelling on a tight shedule: relaxing, doing absolutely nothing worth mentioning here, island hopping, snorkelling and beach spotting. The result: succeeded! If you want to go island hopping, there is probably no better place then Indonesia. Indonesians like to refer to their country as "the land of a thousand islands" and yes, they even ... read more

Another chapter coming to its end: Australia. Time to write down a few new lines for our 'mates' back home! Well, we have been definitely been honouring our name “boysontheroad” lately, as that is exactly what we have been doing for the last couple of weeks: being on the road. Being on the road for quite some miles, I may add. We have driven exactly 5870 kilometers in just 20 days. Not bad is it? :-) We started up in the tropical north of Australia, in Darwin, and then made our way down to the arid center, after which we backed up again to Darwin to drop off our campervan. So, more simply put : we went down an then up again, doing almost the same route twice. Quite crazy if you consider the distances up ... read more

Hello all! From now on we will start writing our blog in English as we are meeting a lot of fellow travellers from all around the world that want to follow our blog….Perhaps this can be a good occasion for the mums to practise their English??? For those same worried mums, don’t worry: we have survived Papua and are still alive and kicking. We have just arrived in Darwin, Australia and will be picking up our campervan tomorrow morning. And then these boys are on the road again for another three weeks touring in Australia! Papua seemed more like Africa then Asia: the people were very dark black skinned and have the same frizzled hair as black people do. I guess there must be a migration history of some kind between Papua and Africa or perhaps ... read more
