"I've just spotted a little owl." It's 5.40am and my heart misses a beat. A man with a white plaited beard is standing in the far corner of the room. What the hell, has he been in here all night?! I remember where I am. It's Malcolm the bird man. We met Malcolm the night before in the D&D brewery, near Los Naranjos. Malcolm is originally from Ipswich in England and I'd say he is in his sixties. His speech was soft and slowed, like someone pressing the slightest of touches on a record of his voice spinning on a turntable - a result of travelling the four corners of the globe for years spotting birds while indulging in a cocktail of drugs. He fascinated us with his knowledge of all things feathered and a 6am ... read more

Got up quite early, me and Pedro made our way down the ferry dock to catch the 620am ferry out of Utila, the trip was quite smooth. Took all day to travel to Copan Ruinas and we chose to stay at Manzana Verde hostel recommended by Martin. Leo(Argentina) and Valentin(German), the boys who travelled from utila with us all the way took the last 2 bunk beds and me and Pedro have to share a double bed just for the night to save money. We were both tired so we went to bed early, an English guy was quite loud that night, coughing, and snoring the whole night and woke us all up at 5am chatting with some girl and going in and out of the room before checking out, Valentin got annoyed and said something ... read more

Happy Birthday to you! It seems this month has been full of birthdays and birthday parties. And here in Honduras, they sing the "Birthday Song" with a twist. After the English version, they add "ya queremos pastel..." which means freely translated "now we want cake"! (and it continues with "and coca-cola also, and coffee for the old folks") When I returned from the states, I rested for almost a full two weeks. After school I would go back to the house and do absolutely nothing. Which was very good for my health, but bad for my social skills! But I did get better, thanks to God. When I returned there was a full week of hot weather and I faithfully took a strange tonic my mother conjured up which did the trick!! The 15th of this ... read more

Honduras and the Copan ruins We only really made a quick trip into Honduras (we were not really sure what we were up to at this point) all we knew is that we had three weeks left in Central America, and Karen was still holding on to the fading idea of getting to Nicaragua...fading fast... Travelling is just one set of huge descisions about where to go next (oh what a life!!!). So we popped accross the border to Copan, (actually not just popped: a bus, another bus, onto a smaller bus, then an even smaller smaller bus. you get the picture, with a dutch couple and a german guy. (no rain) hurrah!!!However lots of men in cowboy hats, wrangler jeans and cowboy boots. Welcome to the Central American Cowboy Look Yeh Haa. Old men ... read more

The Mayan ruins of Copan are located one kilometer outside of the town of Copan Ruinas on the road towards Lago Yojoa and San Pedro Sula. This archaeological park is relatively more expensive than other Mayan sites, but it is well maintained, researched and presented to visitors through the extensive structures, monuments, and historical and cultural interpretations. Admission into the ruins was $15 USD per person, another $15 for the museum, and $7 for the onsite tunnels. All are worth the price. Also within the park is a restaurant, two gift shops, bathrooms, and about a dozen macaws and another dozen or so of another local animal that looked like a cross between a cat, a rat, and a tapir. There is also a nature trail and picnic area. The area surrounding Copan was first ... read more

We boarded a Hedman Alas bus at 5:00am for the five hour trip to Copan. These buses are luxury buses with different classes of service on board. Executive Class Plus is the most expensive class and has the most comfortable seats. They are more comfortable than those on a train or plane, including first class. They recline almost horizontal so that it is very easy to catch up on the sleep that one missed by getting up so early in the morning in order to board this bus. Lucky for us, the bus station was only a few blocks down the street from our hotel. Breakfast was included and the bus made a brief stop at Burger King for some ready made breakfast. While my wife slept, I carried on a conversation with an expat, a ... read more

So the first day with the new group and the last day of private transport and we're leaving at 6 again. Josh and Claudia came to say goodbye which was sweet of them (I'd have been in bed if I didn't have to get up!!) It was about a 7 hour trip to the border and then onto Copan (only 20 mins after the border). Here we could go and visit the Copan Ruins, go to the bird park and get pictures of you with them, or in my case nap and watch awful TV... After pancakes and milkshake though!! It was really hot and wandering around ruins wasn't appealling and looking at the schedule for this part of the trip there are way to many early starts for it to be a holiday and 4 ... read more

Our shuttle from Antigua to Copan Ruins felt like it took forever! Was hot and early but hard to sleep cos was a mini van so no head rests to rest our sleepy heads on :( All the luggage was put on top of the van and part way along the journey the driver slammed on his breaks and suddenly jumped out of the van and started running back along the road. It certainly woke us up and we turned round to see what he was doing and someone spotted the rogue suitcase on the other side of the road that had fallen off! Everyone in the van had the same thought - I hope that isn´t mine! And yay it wasn´t mine! Turns out I was sitting beside a couple from El Salvador that I´d ... read more

I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year!!! This past month has been so busy, between Period II exams, the Christmas Program, and church activities, I was going all the time!! The last Sunday in November our church went to Limon for the service. We had a nice time of fellowship there and I took my camera along to get some beautiful shots. Every time we go there I always say, "I wish I had my camera," so this time I didn't forget it. On the way back we packed in the back of the truck, along with some hitch-hikers. This is one thing I love about Honduras, riding in the back of pickup trucks. It is such a fun experience every time! The Honduran school year lets out in November, ... read more
