We took Hedman Alas bus from Antigua to Copan Ruinas in Honduras after a one night stay in Antigua. So long Antigua, we will not see you again after passing this way three times! The seats on Hedman Alas were pure luxury! When we got to Honduras, the immigration officer was a joker imitating a lion for “Leona” and me as poquino for “jr.” Everyone is a comedian! Arrived in Copan Ruinas which is a funky little town of 6000 people two miles from the Mayan Ruins. Took a tuk-tuk to our hotel. We were staying on the edge of “town” four blocks from the center of town. The hills around town are full of birds and Casa Del Café B&B is great place to stay. Great people in a quiet area. We went to the ... read more

¡¡¡¡¡FELIZ NAVIDAD!!!!!! MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It doesn't feel a bit like December with the gorgeous sunshine and heat, but it's been a fabulous Christmas celebration!!!!! It's also hard to beleive that I've already been here for TWO WEEKS! Crazy! And only "3 days and a wake-up" left (as my dad says ... although I hadn't been keeping track until I talked to him on Thursday and he gave me the count-down). Here are the last few days in review ... Tuesday, December 22 I left La Joya on the 7am bus. It was so sad to leave! I wanted to stay for a week at least. Note to self: If I ever want to get away from it all La Joya is where I need to go! The bus was pretty full, but thankfully I got to ... read more

A pleasant mile walk to the ruins on a lovely paved sidewalk. Guides were perched outside their hut. One approached us, talking about the tours available. We asked “Do you know Juan Carlos?” “No, I don’t.” We paused, not sure what to do. “Oh, well, yes actually, he’s my cousin.” In these towns everybody is everybody’s cousin. We said, “He was recommended. Is he here?” He answered, “No, he isn’t here now.” Which was technically true, if he meant that Juan wasn’t actually standing here in front of us. Actually, Juan was there inside the hut twenty feet away. Eventually, we got Juan and glad we did. He was born in Copan and had been a guide for twenty years. His photo was in my souvenir guidebook. On the 15th, Ashley and I started our trip through Honduras and Guatemala. Stayed one night in Tegucigalpa (capital of Honduras) and visited two churches the next morning - really nice plaza and walking areas in the center. Then we took a bus to Lago de Yojoa. Rented a row boat for equivalent of about $3 and managed to row ourselves down the canal to the lake. We each tried rowing on our own but decided it would be much more efficient if we each just rowed one oar together. When we got to the lake, jumped in - really refreshing despite the algae everywhere. On the way back down the canal rowing in our swimsuits, a local family was in a boat coming the other way. We said good morning and the man told us ... read more

Whoo-hoo!!!!! I made it safe and sound to Honduras on Sunday! Everything went super-bien with the trip, my luggage came through without a problem and I arrived at Copan around 6:30 Sunday evening. When I touched down at San Pedro it was 82 degrees F outside! =) =) =) LOVE IT! It was great to see the mountains, chat in Spanish with the taxi driver, and have a fabulous nap on the 3 hour bus ride to Copan. Sunday evening I attended my host family's church. There are a lot less people attending now than back in February when I was here last. The political/economical situation I feel has affected every part of life for everyone. Monday morning I walked with my host brother, Daniel, to Mayatan and was able to see my former students and ... read more

This entry is about 6 months late. After the last journal, life became so demanding I put a halt to everything. Then upon returning to the states, I didn't want to think about the trip for a while, and then I found the job, and then I got busy again.....you get the picture. But I'll try to sum up the last two months of my stay in Honduras in less than 5 pages. :) April and May were busy months. Not only was it the last semester of school, we also had to plan for a presentation and graduation, exams, final grades and the national tree day celebration. And of course the children were so excited to be getting out of classes they could barely contain themselves, which was a job in itself on a normal ... read more

Hi guys, Mitch and I are in Copan as of yesterday and it is very nice! Very hot a humid and tropical. We went to the ruins which were pretty interesting and the pictures are coming. Today, we went horseback riding and it was really sweet. The horses here are small and bony looking but pretty strong and the guide pretty much just followed us as we led our own trail ride! The people here seem very friendly. There are not too many tourists here right now because the elections are coming up and that may cause problems. However, in small towns and on he islands, I don't think we will have trouble with that. Tomorrow we are headed to Utila Island (in the Carribbean) where we will get certified for Scuba diving. It is cheaper ... read more

La Esperanza is a small town in Honduras whose name means 'hope'. We arrived on the morning of Sunday, Oct. 11 with the hope of - cold! After sweating it through the lowlands of Guatemala and Honduras, I wanted to feel cold again and to have some reason for the two sweaters in my backpack. At 1721 m, La Esperanza is the highest and coldest town in the country. La Esperanza is actually composed of two towns, La Esperanza proper and Intibuca, an indigenous community of the Lenca people. Although our guidebooks suggested La Esperanza as a good place to view or experience Lencan culture, not too much cultural happened during our couple of overnights. Perhaps we would have seen more if stayed for the potato festival and the crowning of the 'potato queen'. What we ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Honduras » Western » Lake Yojoa October 10th 2009

In our Lonely Planet guide, Central America on a Shoestring, there was a great listing for a microbrewery/hotel near Lago de Yojoa, a picturesque lake in central Honduras. We got a lift from the Jungle River Lodge at 7 am in the morning of Oct. 9th to La Ceiba, and made our way to the D&D Bed & Breakfast and Microbrewery via San Pedro Sula. By the time we were dropped off by the chicken bus in front of the road to D&D, it had started to rain and the sky was getting darker. D&D was closed. Argh! Unfortunately we didn't have a backup plan. The brewery was 5 km away from the nearest town and the only other hotel in the area, which resided next door to the brewery, was also closed. This was the ... read more
