I have to admit that one main reason I decided to go to Japan this time is the ohh so tempting straight flight from Boston to Tokyo that JAL is initiating with their brand new 787 Dreamliner planes from Boeing. In all my travels I dread layovers specially long haul flights and this will be a chance for me to be on a brand new spanking jet! Check in was a bit slow at terminal E at Logan, the check in staff always apologising ,it's the maiden voyage we are still working out the kinks, while waiting my turn I heard some commotion behind us and it was the flight stewardesses having photos taken with the Minutemen dudes all costumed up and ready for the media, I did not realize how big this event was! At ... read more

At the Legazpi bus terminal we intended to catch a bus to Naga and then connect to Daet in Camarines Norte but then the locals told us there is a direct bus to Daet, no a/c and it will only take 4 hours, hmm.. the bus conductor promised us it will be minimal stops so we took it. We had breakfast at the cafeteria and then off we go, from the get go the bus was slow, trying to pick up every one on the road including cats and dogs perhaps. And so what was to be 4 hours turned to 6 as we arrived in Naga we were told to transfer to a very full bus, we got seats allright but it was very hot, and the girl next to me is puking buckets. There is a week long convention in the city of Legazpi, court judges or something that made it difficult for us to find a hotel/GH to stay in, going around and round, we decided to check out Xandra hotel in downtown, people told us it was crap but they have available rooms and it wasn't too bad at all in the end, we had a big room with toilet. We already started to get hounded by this guy who claims to be a guide for Mayon, we told him we arranged something already but he keeps lingering around so we just have to learn to ignore him. We went for a walk to the LCC mall and have late lunch there, we were supposed to meet this dude , a Mayon guide in the hopes we ... read more

Took a taxi to Ermita from the airport, the driver asked for 250PHP claiming his meter is not calibrated yet, we have to go to the departure lounge to get a cheaper taxi, anyhoo I bargained for 200PHP and off we go being dropped off at Cagsawa bus office. We got the last 3 seats for the 7pm bus to Legazpi. It's only 3pm so we walked to Robinson's mall to chill while leaving our big bags at the bus company office. We left on time, heavy traffic out of Manila, Celine Dion live in Vegas is playing in the movie screen, painful to watch, a relief when they shut it. Like any buses in Asia it seems they only have 2 settings, off and on, and on means 18 celsius, so we donned our winter ... read more

The hired van we took from El Nido took just over 5 hours to reach the quiet tiny village of Port Barton. From the big town of Roxas we made a turn on a side road and past green rice fields, jungle winding up and down mountains and before you know it Barton is within sight. We were let off just before the bridge that connects a mangrove to the rest of the beach area, we found our accommodation, Greenview resort, we decided to splurge a bit and spend a little more for comfort, it's a big cottage, it can actually fit 5 people, our own toilet and veranda and lots of space. We got it down to 1,200PHP from 1,500/night as we are staying for 5 days. We requested if we can cook our own ... read more

We chose to stay at Lualhati cottage as they allow us to cook, the premises is full of fruit trees, guyabano, atis, pomelos, banana and Till's favorite, star fruit which he comes to pick from the trees every chance he gets. It's his turn to be fruit picker, I hounded constantly the plum trees behind our homestay in Mestia, Georgia when we last traveled together. Well, despite the location being nice we struggled to sleep as the constant barking of dogs and crowing roosters some starting at 1am kept us from having a deep slumber, not to mention the tricycle and truck noises as we were just near the main road, I was still iffy the next morning so we decided to postpone island hopping for the time being. Walked to town and looked for breakfast, ... read more

My German buddy Till arrives in Coron straight from Germany,he is as pale as I could remember him, great to see him after 5 months, we had great times travelling together in the Caucasus, and we'll see if we can give him some tan before he leaves the tropics. Lots of catching up to do, we had a few beers at the Sea Dive restaurant where we are staying and then took him to one of my favorite eateries in town, Trining's, earlier I bought some "pitik" a kind of lobster that I've not seen anywhere else in my travels and some squid so Till can have a great start to his Philippine travels, I dropped the seafood in the morning and they cooked it for me, It was fantabulous, needless to say we gorged the ... read more

It's been years since I was last here in Coron and let me tell you a lot has changed since! 1st the road from the airport to Coron town is now paved, and the small center is bustling with tourists, and restaurants abound, when back then I struggle to even find a good place to eat lunch! Lots of backpackers, some staying to work for a bit with travel companies, I have the same thinking, and I met MJ, a guy who runs his own travel and excursion tours around the Calamianes region. His take is a tad bit different than others, he tries to take people to areas not popular with the mass tourists, remote islands to snorkel or overnight in, eco friendly etc. I got intrigued in this concept, why not, you just walk ... read more

8 years ago I was in Oz for the 1st time, never thought I would come back there again until my best bud from my Trans Africa trip egged me on to stay with him at his new Gucci pad in the suburbs of Sydney, having not seen him for couple years and since I am in the neighborhood I decided to book a flight and spend the holidays with him. Arriving eventually at Sydney airport via Jetstar, I could not find him at the arrivals hall, luckily I have his number so after asking around where to buy a sim card, I tried to activate it but I was told it will take at least 24 hours to be functional! So what a guy to do? I asked the customer service girl to call my ... read more

Uncomfortable bus cama from Sihanoukville to Phnom Penh, 4 hours, I was next to the stinky toilet, have to put a scarf over my face to be able to sleep and not suffocate on pee perfume. Midnight we arrived at PP and have to wait almost an hour till the bus came, we got sorted out transferred to a regular bus, but is more comfortable actually, and it's not full so we were able to spread out. 12 hours it took us, border was very straight forward but we got stuck in Saigon traffic. Got dropped off at District 1 Pham Ngu Lao, backpackers area. I have no guidebook and dont know where I am so I befriended Romain, a French dude on the same bus and we both walked to find a hostel together, a ... read more
