HI Everyone, I am writing this from about 20,000 feet well above the city of Managua in Nicaragua. It feels kinda weird to be writing a blog entry up here but anyways hopefully I can make you feel like you are up in the air with me. At the moment we are passing over Lago Nicaragua, which is surrounded by a myriad of Volcano’s and then on the other side of the Volcano’s is lots and lots of savannah and farmland. Why am I up in the air high over Nicaragua you ask? Well I am flying back from a wonderful four-day stay in Guatemala, at Lake Atitilan, which is about 2 hours out of Guatemala City. When one of my mates suggested I venture up for a few days to race in the Guatemalan ... read more

. Goodbye Xela Double-click any photo for a larger version. I had to cross the border and stay in Mexico for 3 days to get a visa renewal for Guatemala. It used to be that you could hop across any Nicaraguan/ Honduras/El Salvador or Guatemalan frontier when your 90 days were up but last year they amalgamated the visa so you can only spend 90 days total in the four countries. Lot of people get caught and fined because they think they´re ok when they enter a new country. When you enter Mexico by land you get a tourist card which states on it that you must pay $23 at a bank before you can leave. I went to the bank the day before I was leaving but the teller said it had to be before ... read more

PANAJACHEL Left Lanquin/El Retiro together with Eline, Angela, Sarah and Liz at 6am in the morning and took a chicken bus to Coban. And from Coban we hopped on another bus to to Guatemala City before reaching our final destination, a little town called Panajachel located around the lake known as Lago Atitlan. Guatemala City itself is not a really safe place to be in, even during the day. We had to get off the streets and hop on to another bus immediately or risk being mugged. Quite a stressfull experience and thankfully we managed to pass through unscathed. After god knows how many hours, we arrived in Panajachel safe and sound. I liked Panajachel as it was a little town with loads of stalls on the streets selling knick knacks which were a steal. And ... read more

We spent our first couple of nights in Guatemala in a pretty town called Antigua, it used to be the capital until it got destroyed several times over by earthquakes. Antigua is a very touristy town but nice to be in for its creature comforts: cappuccinos and what not. The day after we arrived, we climbed Volcano Pacaya which I had climbed 8 years ago when Amanda and I had visited Guatemala. - even the volcano had changed with a nice walking path up the side of the volcano and official guides to accompany you. We went on the tour at dusk so got to see the sun setting behind the foggy sky :) On arrival Nick bought a walking stick, well it was just a stick, for about 25 cents and some Skittle sweets, the ... read more

We decided to kill some time by Lake Atitlan before our flight out to Peru. The Lake is one of Guatemalas main attractions and it was easy to see why. It was beautiful. We headed from Panajachel, where all the buses arrive, to San Pedro. It was a very bumpy 30 minute boat ride to get there. San Pedro is a travellers hangout, where roast spuds can be bought, and English football was watched. Yes!! It was a nice place to relax for a couple of days, though whether this had anything to do with the view, and lack of anything else to do, or whether it was the passive smoking of various herbs, I guess we will never know. We went to San Marcos, a smaller village on the other side of the Lake, after ... read more

After a hasty escape from the expensive but quaint town of Antigua, the 4 of us (a Scot, a Californian, an Aussie and I) made it to San Pedro, on the shores of beautiful Lake Atitlan, described by British writer Thomas Huxley as the most beautiful lake in the world, which was immedietly understandable. We boated across, after being hassled by a drunk on the beach for a while. San Pedro is a little laid back hillside town, and has the odd feeling about it that most of the inhabitants are hippies and backpackers that meant to pass right through it years ago, but just never left. What did we do there...well, here I will offer a very non-descript and family oriented account of our fun in San Pedro. Sunday night, we all went out pretty ... read more
