Planning a 3 week road trip through Guatemala with our young children. Any suggestions? Things to avoid?
In April 2009, we will be driving south from our home in Playa del Carmen, Mexico through Belize and into Guatemala. We plan to spend three weeks exploring the country. Our trip will coincide with semana santa and Easter and we plan to spend several days in Antigua to experience the festivities there. I have been reading this forum and some of the blogs, Browntown's and others, in preparation for our journey.
We will be traveling with our two young children, ages 6 and 7. They handily managed 16 days in Belize last year and we are all excited about this new adventure. I am slowly piecing together our itinerary and looking for suggestions. I am interested to hear all of your travel tips and advise and, perhaps just as importantly, cautions about what not to do and where not to go with the kids. Is the trek up Pacaya too much for them? Do I need to worry about them falling in with a bad crowd in San Pedro? (Just kidding, we live in Playa del Carmen. They can handle "that" sort of thing) Have any of you made a trip of this nature with your kids?
Belize was an absolute blast. If anyone is planning a similar trip, I managed to blog through most of the journey. I am happy to lend advise about the places we visited.
Reply to this Well, we are packed and ready to go. We leave Playa on Monday morning. Any last minute tips and/or advise?
Reply to this Hello Michele 😊
Unfortunately there is not always somebody available who can answer all the questions. Hope you have a fun trip. 😊
However, here is a thread you may find interesting.

Reply to this Thanks Mell. We are really excited to get on the road. Let me know if it is permissable to post link to my travel blog on this thread. I'm going to blog as we go along and post in (almost) real time.

If you post it on this thread and post links to particular blogs which fit in with the topics only on other threads, I think it would be OK. There is a fine line between conversation enhancing links and self promotion. 😊
Reply to this Oh, I know as I am the queen of shameless self promotion!! 😉 In this case, it seems like it might be helpful to other folks planning the same kind of family trip or similar. I can't be the only one travelling in CA with the kiddos. I'll post them here as we go along. Wish us good luck and safe travels!!
Reply to this BTW, Guatamala is also on my list of places I want to go. Last time I was there, I didnt get to see much because it was pretty dangerous. I heard things have greatly improved. I dont know yet if I will be going with my boyfriend and daughter or alone, when I go.
Reply to this I would love to hear about your trip, Michele! Hopefully my daughters and I will go to Guatemala in December.
Have a wonderful trip!
Reply to this Hello Michelle 😊
Your links dont seem to be working.
If you are going to regularly post links here rather than just one it would be a problem. I though you just meant one. What would happen if members give updates about their travels regularly on the forums then those threads would push all the threads of those planning trips down the queue.
Sorry to cause this confusion. 😊 I am going do delete your last post.

Reply to this One other point: If you do post a link with a blog about your trip, please make it a TravelBlog link. Sorry to bombard you with rules, but TravelBlog has a lot of members which is what makes these rules necessary. 😊
