... read more

So the other great thing to see in chiapas is appearantly, Palenque, well actually not Palenque, that is just a boring ugly town, but if you take a collectivo for another 15 min or so you end up in El Panchan right next to amazing pyramids. El Panchen again by itself is a bit weird, some 5 hostels, mixed together in a tourist zone, a huge restaurant, a bookshop a tatoo artist, people selling artisan crafts.... I felt like "the beach" with lots of hippies but no beach, and spacey mushroom trips to an adjacent waterfall instead of weed farmers. We stayed almost a week, playing some gigs in the rain forrest and of course we went over to see the pyramids. These were very different to the ones in Oaxaca and D.F. mainly because it ... read more

Sorry-pics aren't in the right order but I'm losing patience with the website... I had a terrible night sleep. The walls between the rooms were paper thin and I had one side with a snorer and the other with 2 blokes chatting loudly until the early hours. I think by the time they stopped, it must have been 2am, which was roughly the time when the dogs starting barking and the cockerels started crowing. I thought to myself “Why? It's the middle of the night... Aren't you supposed to start crowing when the day breaks?” In the end, I was awake before my alarm even went off, so I left the hotel at about 5.15am as it was still pitch black. I had heard that the transport to Tikal started from 5.30am, so I intended to ... read more

8th of February already and this was the end of the Belize adventure. That morning, I was packing my bag and going to Guatemala – the country I was looking forward to the most out of the whole trip. Still on a high from the previous day's experience and following the Lonely Planet's advice (start early) I left at about 8am. I knew I had to get the bus to the border town of Benque, about 12km away from San Ignacio. From there it was 3km to the border (Bz$10 in a taxi). After that, I had to cross on foot and get a bus or colectivo on the Guatemalean side to carry on the journey to El Remate, a village about 20 miles from Tikal. The wait for the bus wasn't too long – maybe ... read more

Mayan ruins are amazing! I spent 5 days hiking to and from El Mirador in Northern Guatemala. I started in FLores wich is a small little island town on the edge of a lake. Flores is total chill, I spent my days swimming in the lake and reading in hammocks. On my second day day there I left for a 5 day adventure to see the tallest Mayan Pyramid yet discovered(72 meters tall!). With 3 friends ( 2 Dutch and 1 German) that I met in Lanquin we headed to FLores to arrange out trip. THe tour operator said we needed at least 6 people to get a lower price to we picked up 2 Austrilans and were ready to go the next morning. While waiting for our bus we found that there was another ... read more

There were a couple of options for the border crossing into Guatemala. You could do the standard chicken bus for $5 Belizean, but with 4 of us $25 bz for a taxi to the border was the better choice. In a stroke of luck the taxi driver was very helpful, full of advice about managing the crossing. Borders in Central America can be simple, and can be tricky. They can also be as expensive as you let them be. Technically, entry into Guatemala was free, but we were aware that this was unlikely to be the case in practice. We knew there was an exit fee for Belize, and we were ready for that, but we were unsure what we were likely to have to pay to enter Guatemala. The driver explained the process to us ... read more

I feel like saying Happy New Year! I don't know why. Happy almost new month! This morning we got up & had salty eggs & the most delicious drink. They're called Licuados here & they blend fresh fruit with either water or milk & serve. Yummmm! I had a Papaya Licuado this morning with water. MMMMM! Mircos came to gather us up calling to us "hey gringos." :) That's us! We gathered our things & headed for the road to catch our mini bus. After walking in the hot hot sun for about 25 minutes a bus arrived & picked us up. We paid our $1.50 each for the hour bus ride into Santa Ilena, the town just next to Flores. The ride was fairly uneventful & we were just grateful that the bus wasn't jam ... read more

Up before the roosters & the sun today (5am!). The sky is clear & the stars are out in abundance. We waited in front of our hostal with Micros & watched numerous mini-buses drive by us. One finally stopped, asked for our ticket, handed it back to me & pointed behind him & drove away. I guess he wasn't our driver. Eventually our driver showed up. Jorge drove us to Tikal & we slowly watched the sky change color from black & starry to grey & brighter. The drive was beautiful a 2 lane road of dense jungle. We arrived at the gate to Tikal at 6am & waited for them to allow us through. Once we arrived to the parking lot (after 2 checkpoints where Jorge had to show a piece of paper to a ... read more

Well its been a bit since a posted something here but it seems the farther north I travel the crappier the internet connections seem to be. Since I last posted I have seen and done a lot. I hiked a volcano! Volcano Pacaya to be exact. It is a small volcano near Antigua. As far as Antigua goes, I did not care too much for it. It i full of of gringos and all you hear is english. Which also explains why everything was overpriced there as well. The volcano was amazing. I didn't get to see any lava as it had just exploded last spring but we did get to toast marshmallows over some flames there and walk into a steam cave! It was definitely the highlight of Antigua for me. I spent about 4 ... read more

Much to cover in this blog! On Christmas Eve we took a bus from Guatemala City to Flores, up in the northern rainforest of El Peten, a journey of about 500 km which took 8 hours. We then went on to the small village of El Remate, about halfway between Flores and the Mayan site of Tikal. Our hotel was La Casa de Don David, a charming collection of small casitas in a lush garden backing on to Lake Peten Itza. We could fill a whole blog about our stay there, but as well as Tikal (of which more later), we went horseback riding through the rainforest while our guide taught us some new words in Spanish. If anyone could have heard us chanting ‘pajero / pareha / pareho’ (‘small bird / a couple / smooth ... read more
