Antigua is cold this time of year! I wish I had figured that out before I arrived carrying nothing with me except light t-shirts & clothes. I had no idea what to expect when I arrived in Guatemala City Airport except the hope that someone from my language school would be there to pick me up when I got out. As soon as I cleared customs - There he was. Sergio, my driver. It was going to be a 45 minute drive from Guatemala City to Antigua. I didn’t know what time it was. I was too tired to ask and soon fell asleep as soon as the car started moving. All I knew was that according to my watch it was somewhere close to 12am and I could no longer remember which timezone I had ... read more

A very hectic afternoon

January 2000: I was living in Antigua studying Spanish for a month and had made friends with a number of people from different nationalities. One in particular was Eva from Denmark who I had previously met in Oaxaca in Mexico. We planned on a weekend away to the beach and headed there by bus for some sun and surf. When we arrived there we hooked up with other foreigners on the bus and had lunch, after that we found a spot on the beach to setup my tent and store our gear. When we finished we swam awhile and then went for a walk around. This was one of the luckiest days in my life, we came across a turtle breeding organization and went in for a look, to my amazement the staff were preparing for ... read more

Hey Everyone, So i finally arranged some time off and went on a vacation like i had been planning the entire time. I decided not to leave the country like i had originally thought i would do, and instead went to an island that is still part of Guatemala called Monterrico. It was only a 3 hour bus ride from where i was, but the difference in weather would be the same as going from Washington state to Hawaii. Monterrico even has the nickname of little Hawaii around Guatemala. The reason i decided to stay within Guatemala is because i knew it would be cheaper to stay closer, so the ride there wouldn't cut into my budget and therefore i could stay longer. My plan was to go for as long as my money would take ... read more

Everybody likes surfing... Hammer, wahnsinn!!!

Unser Hostel in Antigua

After a relaxing couple of days, it is time to head to the beach for my last few days in Guatemala. We took a nice 2 hour shuttle ride(no sickness!) to the beach in Monterrico. Along the way, we saw a volcano erupt, which was pretty neat as well as loofahs growing. I had no idea they were plants. We stayed at Johnny's, which is a cute little resort on the beach. The biggest decision of our days was whether to lounge in a hammock or on the beach. Lex did attempt to go swimming and almost drowned. The waves there were the largest that I have ever seen, and a local guy told us that it is off season for the big waves. I can't even imagine how large they get. It was basically just ... read more

I HAVE NEVER IN MY 125,00 MKS OF RIDING EEVER SEEN ANYTHING THA YOU COULD COMPARE TO OUR RIDE THROGH LOW MOUNTAINS ON A 2 LANE ROAD THAT WAS PURE CURVES THE WHOLE WAY . I ACTUALLY WAS STARTING TO HOPE FOR A STRAIGHT STRETCH AFTER THE FIRST HOUR AAND A HALF.WE SAW AUAVA PLANTS ON THE VILLAGE SPOTS AND THE MESCAL. Pretty well have to catch up later. We've had long days, very little internet places as we travel further south. Leaving Mexico turned out to be a bit of ... read more

Paradise island. Last weekend I went with a friend to an island near Monterico. We took three chicken buses and a boat to an island on such a hot day. It took about five hours but boy was it worth it! The local buses are interesting to say the least. You sit two to a seat but when the bus fills up which it always does people just tend to come and sit on your lap, forcing you to move up and they kind of put one cheek on the seat. When two people do this it works quite well as they can then lean across the isle onto each other and therefore you can fit six people across, it's very cosy but it just works. I've realised personal space is not a big thing ... read more

Hello again, Well you will have to hang tight for pictures. Apparently i didnt pack the cord that connects the camera to the computer, so until i find one in one of the many markets (yes they will have one, the markets have everything) you are out of luck for pictures. But we are taking some, mostly alot of mental pictures though. So, we left Antigua on.... ummm on friday? Im starting to loose the days already. We headed south to Monterrico. Again, on the crazy chicken bus. They call it the chicken bus, because as you can imagine, they transport chickens on them. It smells. Bad. So went from Antigua to a town called Escuintla. A busy smelly transport town, where we were shoved off the bus, packs thrown on to the roof of the ... read more

We entered town and turned toward the beach. When we paused to gain our bearings and choose a course of action, a cute, little, local girl ran up to the window to suggest some places to stay. She was about nine years old and a hard worker, running ahead of the truck, directing us to various establishments. We checked out a couple before checking into the Marlin hotel. A color changing pool, cheep rooms and pool table were the main selling points. We put on our board shorts, waxed our skim boards and headed to the beach. The shore break was quite large, pounding the black sand with a fierce, crashing roar, but we skim boarded anyway. A few times I was engulfed in a wave then slammed against the shore, but nothing too bad. We ... read more
