The trade and economic embargo held against Cuba by the USA has lasted for some decades now. America has prohibited American companies and their subsidiaries trading with Cuban entities and prohibited its citizens from spending money in Cuba. (That’s right - I’ve always thought that US citizens were prohibited from visiting Cuba - however the various pieces of legislation that piece together the embargo actually only make it a crime to SPEND money in Cuba. SO for all those Americans aching for some April sun in Cuba I guess you just need to find a philanthropic friend to pay your WHOLE way.) As a result I naively thought that this may mean that American culture may be less prevalent in this tropical island nation. Disappointingly, as I jumped into the cab at the airport bound for ... read more

Snakes at the Lincoln We´d booked our beds in the hotel Lincoln and jet-setted over miami and into Havana for our first leg stop. I should have been wearing a white suit, smoking a big cheroot. A hotel fit for the world´s best racing driver was surely fit for us so our rationalising went. But its been almost fifty years since Fangio checked in, and that should have been a warning. These days, the Lincoln is a sad hollow gaff, like being the last kid to leave in school. Five people for breakfast in a hall fit for 100, a lift that only goes up when you want to go down and always a porter on hand to screw you for another few dollars. But, secretly, I liked it for the same reasons. This place didn't ... read more

Thursday 2 March to Saturday 4th March Well, we are finally here in Havana libre (Free Havana!), as Fidel likes to call it. We talked about it and planned it for ever and then suddenly we arrived, courtesy of a great Virgin flight (nice food, good movies and drinks). It was 29 degrees and sunny when we arrived, a welcome change from the cold back home. We shared a cab from the airport with a swiss guy called Eves who had been travelling in Canada, Panama and Costa Rica for a few months and was coming to Cuba for a month. He had been waiting at the airport for two hours for his swiss friend who lives here in Havana to come and meet him - some mix-up had meant she wasn’t there. So Eves came ... read more

The flight from Cancun to Havana took one hour, but experiencing Cuba in 2006 is like flying into another world. It feels like you're entering a museum amidst a visual explosion of once in a lifetime travel sights and experiences. Where else, for example, can you catch a taxi ride in a 1948 Dodge as you can in downtown Havana? Ah Cuba; the rhythm, the rum, the salsa dancing, the music and the beautiful Cubana chicas, the rum (¿did I already mention that?), the havana cigars, the colonial buildings and the fiestas by night. There's a good chance you will have the travel experience of a lifetime in Cuba, but the initiation can be quite challenging. This is because Cubans are famous for working their angles with tourists, and I believe they are the undisputed masters ... read more

God dag godt folk!

I did mean to write this up as soon as it happened as it was so fascinating .. but obviously here I am trying to remember it 2 weeks later. We arrived into Havana and picked up some transport from the airport .. we were meant to being picked up but that failed to materialise so we found a guy who had a van who was leaving immediately and not trying to rip us off ... some people were asking $25 per person but we managed to get into town for $20 for both of us. The guy who was driving had a couple of other people to pick up and drop off so we got to see bits of Havana that we probably wouldn't have otherwise seen. The thing that struck me most was how ... read more

... read more

Left Quito very early in the morning for a 7:30am flight to Havana via Panama. Had a 2 hour layover in Panama, tried to buy more Euros but they don't sell them there (only buy them). With the one hour time change arrived in Cuba at 2:30pm. Overall the flying time as only around 3 hours (1 + 2). We exchanged the Euros to CUC. At the airport the posted rate for US$ was 0.89 but we're not sure if that includes the 10% levy (later found out it does not). Took a taxi (nice new Volkswagen) to our casa particular: Casa Mer. First impression was that it looked more run down than it did online. The inside is nice and clean. The house was built in 1944 and appears to be from that era. The ... read more

With a hurricane class 3 on the day of our departure we tempted fate.. who spared us by having both our different flight canceled 4 hours apart (our rent a car was returned and I had already left the airport). Ted and I caught up and as there was no electricity, light, nor gas at the family house we normally stay at, we have finally checked in a hotel (which we probably can't leave until tomorrow now as the waters are rising). One happy chap is Ted cause his photos of the waves crashing on the Malecon promenade are going to be...smashing. Oh, well; travels do turn out to be adventures when unexpected things happen (like chasing after the guy who stole my photo camera last night). So all is well, even though we don't know ... read more

I little more of my observations of the people of Cuba... Food: I forgot to mention their passion for... mayonnaise! They sell huge pot of it and have it for breakfast and probably lunch too. I don't care cause I'm sticking to my favorite: Guayaba marmalada (goyave jam) which reminds me of my mother's. Quite hard to find anything vegetarian in normal restaurant and nothing enticing in the few vego places I have found!. I think I'll revert back to fruits (only a few cents) and daiquiri. Oh, I forgot to mention I now make mean daiquiris! The bods: It is hot, and 'occasionally', cuban man will uncover their chest -not to my displeasure-. Guys, close your eyes. Girls, this is not bad! The man here have muscly but very lean bodies with every single little ... read more
