Now back in Mexico and as Cuba had no internet connection (the Cubans are not permitted to use the internet unless they are performing some specific governmental task or studying and always need a license to use it) I wrote a diary to type up now and looking at what I´ve written this may end up as a bit of an epic but please feel free to skip the words and just look at the pictures! 17th June Our journey to Cuba started at 3.45am after an extremely wet evening during which I shivered my way through a piano concert after a 45 minute walk in torrential rain followed by an hour and a half in a 20minute taxi journey. After an unanounced aircraft change in Veracruz Anne and I made it to Cancun airport where ... read more

Firstly, sorry if any of the following is out of date, we've been very lazy and busy at the same time!! We can both honestly say that Havana and Cuba, was....an experience! It wasn't all bad, there were definite highlights, most of which included El Mundial (the world cup for you Gringo's) and surprisingly for Tom the amount of gorgeous, scantily clad women! Our trip began with a delay at Birmingham airport...a sign of things to come?! The flight was pretty hell, the only film involved a man and ten huskies. We never quite figured out why! Immigration in Havana is intimidating to say the least! It was copied from the East German border checkpoints! After waiting ages and finally getting out of the airport we got our first look at Havana. Like most places the ... read more

English After four months and a half we have finally got back home! We arrived at Venice airport safe, tanned, and thin (-5 kg Alvise, -2 kg Chiara). It was really strange to be back at Venice airport and listening to people speaking italian rather than spanish. Many feelings and thoughts are occupying our minds. We think we had a fantastic trip and met really interesting people, but actually we are happy to be at home after all this time. Of course, as soon as we arrived in Italy our first priority was guess what? Food!... anyway, before getting fat again, let’s update the blog about our last stop: Cuba. 'Vamos bien!' These are the first words we read on an advertisement, as soon as we arrived in Cuba, while going by taxi from the airport ... read more

Hiya, A couple of weeks have passed and, in the meantime, we have broken Havana´s bewitching spell long enough to do some travelling around Cuba. We decided to travel for a week, starting first by going to the Isla De La Juventud with four friends (Angela, Maria, Adama and Adama´s six year old daughter - Amatu). Part of Cuba, La Isla is a small island off the southern coast of Cuba that used to be the hangout of Francis Drake and Blackbeard (or was it red?) and was apparently the original inspiration for the book Treasure Island. In the sixties it was renamed "Island of the Youth" in honour of the thousands of volunteer students that went there to get industry set up. We had heard it was a beautiful, quiet island, half of which is ... read more

oh yes, we made it through the costums and into cuba, even though i (hilde) got stopped and had to empty my purse completly, and the poor lady had to look at all my crap. Anne M has finally delivered her paper, on time, and even though we got held up one extra day in La Habana because of that, we can't complain, cause Havana is very nice in it's own special way. we love the old cars, hate the old (poopy) smell. still warm, all the old skin is peeled off, and we're ready for some cuban beaches, colonial Trinidad, and cigars... CUBA LIBRE, no es facil... hilde y anne m PICRTURES from La Habana will appear when Ante gets home to norway and uploads some. these are from Trinidad... read more

Time has flown by and I realised that I hadn’t sat down and written for well over a month. I have been reliably informed that summer has hit the UK so I thought it might be safe to write again without making you all too jealous of the beautiful weather we were enjoying while you suffered the cold. Especially now because someone here quite rashly turned the thermostat up in Cuba and we are finding it hard to do anything during the day because of the heat. We know that it will only get worse so are trying to adjust to the inevitable. Of course, there are perks to the weather change - we are officially entering mango season and they are popping up everywhere, big, juicy and cheap. And the heat gives a good excuse ... read more

Writing this one up slightly out of order, as there´s still plenty more to come from Cuba, just so I can put up some fidel pics!! Well, first things first, the beard survives!!! I arrived in the Plaza at around 8.30am. The man himself was already in full swing, ranting against Georgey W, and praising his new bestest friends Hugo and Eva. The huge crowd, of mainly young people dressed in red T-shirts carrying various slogans, were loving it, and waving their little paper flags vigorously at appropriate moments. Somehow I managed to squeeze myself into an excellent position directly infront of old Fidel, literally standing on the covered cables leading to/from his mic. Except at the particular point where I was, they weren´t actually covered. I resisted the temptation to cut the cables, shout out ... read more

Apologies everyone but the internet is pretty crap in Cuba, so I have had to download my Cuba trip in dribs and drabs. Cuba Libre - Free Cuba, or another way of asking for a rum & coke. Arrived in Havana on the 10th. Your hand luggage is x-rayed after you pass through immigration. Mini had a camera charger in her bag, and was asked if she had any other electronic items, whereupon she showed them her walkie-talkies. There & then her passport was requested, and she was told to collect it at the exit. After we got our luggage we went to the exit and I got through no problems, however Mini was told to go through Secondary Inspection. A lot of electronic items are prohibited in Cuba such as DVD players & cordless phones, ... read more

So, here I am after all this time. The most important place on my trip. The place I´ve wanted to go for so long. The place I´ve been so excited about... Cuba!!! Well, the day I arrived, it rained. They´ve been starting to have water shortages there´s been so little, but the day I arrived, BAM!!!! Only place I´ve been so far that didn´t have an unusual amount of falling wet stuff was Santiago in Chile (and I guess Iguazu!). It´s almost like it´s followed me from home... Ne´er mind. Well, I had a little walk around my local area of Vedado anyway. I´ve read a lot about the hassle you can get here as a tourist, from people who want to sell you dodgy rum or cigars, blah blah blah. Well, there really wasn´t any ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Cuba » Oeste » La Habana March 27th 2006

Monday 27th March Well, we have finished our first month in Cuba. In many ways we have really settled in and I am very much getting used to not having to work for a while (I think it is just starting to feel like I’m not just on holiday). My Spanish is improving daily and hopefully by the end of my stay I might be able to understand someone other than our Spanish teachers (I’m convinced the Cubans outside our classes speak a different language ;-)). Much the same applies to our dancing which is coming along slowly. I still have much to learn before I can swing Olga round the dance floor confidently, but we will be happy if we can go dancing salsa together properly once or twice towards the end of our stay. ... read more
