... read more

Since Lana had to return to work in the Great White North and wasn't too excited about backpacking around Cuba anyway, just the three of us flew to Havana from Guadalajara the day after Lana flew from Puerto Vallarta to Calgary.... read more

So, via this circuitous route, we landed in Cuba and it would take a far more eloquent scribe than yours truly to even begin to paint an accurate picture of it. I should say at the outset that we haven’t had enough time here to do any more than scratch the surface of this intensely complex country whose political and cultural values are cause for heated and bitter debate. The aim is to give a flavour of the place, not justify or condemn the Castro regime that is patently flawed - so was the one it replaced almost fifty years ago. I’ll explain how we’ve interpreted the situation by the places and events we’ve seen, what we’ve established by talking to all kinds of people here, what we’ve read etc; one thing is for certain ... read more

Its been a week of departures. It seems the press in the outside world were fixated with Castro’s retirement and the consequent “elections”. “Elections” in a loose sense of the word, in that we are not living in democracy. It is not the people really who chose their new president. They had to vote for the new representatives in parliament but they are all from the same party. It was no big surprise to anyone here that Raul got chosen as the new leader. And whereas the outside press seems to think that this signals a big change, the ppl here don’t see it that way. They think that yes, things will start to change now but only very slowly. A good friend of mine pointed out that when things do change, there will be problems, ... read more

January in Oxford Street can only mean one thing - sale shopping. As I joined the stampedes and elbow my way to that elusive size 10, 70% off jacket - to join the other six jackets in my wardrobe - I felt a small sense of guilt about my excessive consumerism. Fast forward two weeks and I've just landed in Havana, which couldn't really be farther from our cookie monster consumer driven society. In a country where everyone earns the same wage - disposable income and "I wonder which brand of toothpaste I should buy" just doesn't exist. People are resourceful, nothing is wasted and it seems that through the forced hand of trade embargoes Cuba has achieved the current biggest western buzz word - sustainability. Driving into town and the road from the airport was ... read more

Aspaldi idazten ez dudala eta, gure berri emango dizuet. Oraintxe bertan Chiapasen gaude, Mexikon. Idatzi nuen azkeneko alditik ez dut travelbloga eguneratu, izan ere Australia eta Ibai utzi nituenetik Mexikora etorri naizen arte ez dut argazki kamerarik izan, hortaz txapa bakarrik idazteko, erruki izan zaituztet. Kontua da Australiatik, Macaura, Hong Kongera eta Londresera hegan egin da gero Euskal Herrira itzuli nintzela, gabonetan. Bertan etxekoekin egun goxo batzuk igaro eta Naiararekin ekin nion berriro abenturari. Ez diot beraz, Ibaik bezela munduari bira eskumara emango, baina orain nire zoriontasuna ezin handiagoa da. Naiara eta biok espero baino gehiago egon ginen Euskal Herrian baina azkenik Urtarrilaren 31an Kubarantz abiatu ginen. Kuban La Havana izan genuen lehen helburu. Y La Havana... está que se cae. Etxe kolonialak guztiz zaharkituta daude eta fatxada denak ... read more

WELCOME TO THE HOTEL INGLATERA….such a lovely place….such a lovely face It’s a wonder all the women aren’t pregnant and all the men asleep. Cuba runs on sex, fuelled by rum, coffee and tobacco, supported by the familiar background soundtrack, it’s hot, and wet, fecund. They have the best of everything. Travelling thru the city and countryside you still get an endless barrage of patriotic reminders of the revolutionary struggle, now nearly 50 years on! Libertad, Liberty, is a consistent theme, but this doesn’t ... read more

Cuba... Everyday I feel differently about her. She is a land of such extremities and contrast, of that I am sure, but at the same time I do not feel I can say with any conviction or authority that she is one way or the other, or even say simply from my heart what my feelings are towards her, as they come and go like ebb and flow. Unfortunately, the travelblog website is blocked in Cuba and I have been dependent on getting an email off to Australia for someone to post my blogs there. I have wanted to document my thoughts more, but it has been difficult to note down what I have felt and seen in the short time slots I have had when I did finally find a tediously slow internet connection in ... read more
