Unfortunatley my entire blog has been lost due to an unforseen crash with the providers main server. Feeling pretty low about that at the mo as i had anticipated to use the website as my main journal. Hindsight dictates i should have backed it up. Note to self back everything up. well it is 1042 pm Costa Rica time. Im on 24 hour radio duty in case of emergency at any of the project sites. Much has happened since my last entry, but not quite feeling the love at the mo to write vast amounts. You can drop me a mail through here or on my email ewensilcock@hotmail.com i will add to this again when i can work out what happened and when. last night we had a pool party, i built us a pool 5m ... read more

Hey its actually Friday a bit behind again. Will get to that later. Monday saw the HCP's arrive, for the rest of us thats Host Countriy Participants. It is the other string to Raleigh's bow. They sponsor up to 20 locals to join in the expedition. Which other wise the would not be able to afford or have the opportunity to do this. We have 7 joining us this time. Only issue is they don't speak English, which is a little presumptuous, and i can not speak Spanish. One even asked me if I didn't want to learn, through a translator, that was... As the day progressed we had some more classes and then we popped into town to get some bits for the projects. On the way back we popped into Pop's for mango ice ... read more

Up early as we needed to see one last campsite before we left, again unfortuantely there seemed to be no recentley trodden path so after 45 minutes we decided to give this up and work with the areas we had already seen. Whilst we were waiting for our ride I took some interesting photos of a building at our secret location. Bats seemed to be plentiful and after 20 mins I had got a couple of decent shots. I must have taken a bout 200 photos and out of them about 5 were ok. Whilst we were waiting for our ride I decided to read the leaflet I was given with my malaria tablets, I wish I hadn't as the given side effects didn't sound great. I have to take these every day and I haven't ... read more

My butt hurts i forgot how much sitting on a rubber boat can ache, especially after 4 hours, oh and yup my knees are very red. I should have learnt by now that i burn easily!!! So much for becoming sensible at 30!!!! Saturday saw me inflate the boat we will be using during the adventure phase at some point and in some capacity I still can not give too much away. I think though that a few people have an idea about what is happening as it seems to slip out form various people from time to time. I have forgotten to mention Dave recentley, he is still about but his presence is limited due to the high level strenuous work going on. I think I may have made a istake bringing him as he seems ... read more

Hi all, we have just got back from a small road trip around some of the camp sites we will be using during the adventure challenge phase of the expedition. This is where the participants head off on a four day hike across a mountain range and have to fend for themselves. After this all the four groups meet up and are bused to a secret location that we visited yesterday for a survivor style challenge again over four days. During this time they have rations but no tents, so it is up to them to build hammocks and basha's to accomadate all of them. At the moment i'm feeling a little odd we still haven't settled into a daily routine for instance last night i was in bed by 1930 but up by 0500 this ... read more

Arrival into Costa Rica went without a hitch, flights and connections ran smoothly. Although it still freaks me out being that high in the sky and having no control over it. Ross (program manager/scottish!!!) met us at the airport where we arranged cabs to Costa Rica backpackers. We being myself, Emma S, Nimrat, Piers and Ian all Project staff. On arrival they hadn't heard of us although Ross was adamant he'd had a 20 min conversation with them earlier in the day. We have truely arrived in Central america!!! After checking in dropping the bags off in our room we headed down for a cold drink and a catch up with our new friends.... read more

Up early, well id been up half the night didn't sleep to well, 0700 its a lie in to what i'm used to now, although its 1400 UK time. The Country Director met us we loaded a couple of 4WD's and made our way to Field Base, home for the duration of the project, in Catie in the area of Volcan Turrialba. An imposing volcanoe not exactly dormant. We arrived roughly 2 hours later after a lengthy 60 km journey over pretty bumpy roads not your typical UK roads. We were met by the rest of the team Marco-Logistics/comic, Hugh and Amanda-assistant logistics, Kiran-Medic, Yvette- accounts, Helen-admin, Esla and Emma p twoof the translaters going out to project. Breakfast followed, a local speciality rice with black beans which is known as pinto. This is eaten for ... read more
