Volcán Turrialba Travel Blogs

Background: Costa Rica is a Central American success story: since the late 19th century, only two brief periods of violence have marred its democratic development. Although still a largely agricultural country, it has expanded its economy to include strong technology and tourism sectors. The standard of living is relatively high. Land ownership is widespread.

Unfortunatley my entire blog has been lost due to an unforseen crash with the providers main server. Feeling pretty low about that at the mo as i had anticipated to use the website as my main journal. Hindsight dictates i should have backed it up. Note to self back everything up. well it is 1042 pm Costa Rica time. Im on 24 hour radio duty in case of emergency at any of the project sites. Much has happened since my last entry, but not quite feeling the love at the mo to write vast amounts. You can drop me a mail [View Full Entry]

Hey its actually Friday a bit behind again. Will get to that later. Monday saw the HCP's arrive, for the rest of us thats Host Countriy Participants. It is the other string to Raleigh's bow. They sponsor up to 20 locals to join in the expedition. Which other wise the would not be able to afford or have the opportunity to do this. We have 7 joining us this time. Only issue is they don't speak English, which is a little presumptuous, and i can not speak Spanish. One even asked me if I didn't want to learn, through a translator, [View Full Entry]

So, we have failed to update this (sorry to those few who read this!). We stopped taking classes a while ago, and since internet is at the school, our opportunities to update this thing have become less and less. We have been very busy, which has been nice, but time has been going by really really quickly. David and I have been busy painting a house for missionaries here, in beautiful hues of blues and yellows. It's nice because the view is unbelievable there, and another host mom, Macha, has been overly hospitable, bringing us cold drinks and giving us [View Full Entry]

Up early as we needed to see one last campsite before we left, again unfortuantely there seemed to be no recentley trodden path so after 45 minutes we decided to give this up and work with the areas we had already seen. Whilst we were waiting for our ride I took some interesting photos of a building at our secret location. Bats seemed to be plentiful and after 20 mins I had got a couple of decent shots. I must have taken a bout 200 photos and out of them about 5 were ok. Whilst we were waiting for our ride [View Full Entry]

My butt hurts i forgot how much sitting on a rubber boat can ache, especially after 4 hours, oh and yup my knees are very red. I should have learnt by now that i burn easily!!! So much for becoming sensible at 30!!!! Saturday saw me inflate the boat we will be using during the adventure phase at some point and in some capacity I still can not give too much away. I think though that a few people have an idea about what is happening as it seems to slip out form various people from time to time. I have forgotten [View Full Entry]

Hi all, we have just got back from a small road trip around some of the camp sites we will be using during the adventure challenge phase of the expedition. This is where the participants head off on a four day hike across a mountain range and have to fend for themselves. After this all the four groups meet up and are bused to a secret location that we visited yesterday for a survivor style challenge again over four days. During this time they have rations but no tents, so it is up to them to build hammocks and basha's to [View Full Entry]

Arrival into Costa Rica went without a hitch, flights and connections ran smoothly. Although it still freaks me out being that high in the sky and having no control over it. Ross (program manager/scottish!!!) met us at the airport where we arranged cabs to Costa Rica backpackers. We being myself, Emma S, Nimrat, Piers and Ian all Project staff. On arrival they hadn't heard of us although Ross was adamant he'd had a 20 min conversation with them earlier in the day. We have truely arrived in Central america!!! After checking in dropping the bags off in our room we headed [View Full Entry]
