Tim version: * Headed to Caye Caulker via Belize City, a hole of a place, and loved both the journey out to and Caye Caulker Itself. * Got to "swim with the sharks" and the Rays, enojoyed waaay too much local rum, made some good friends, got sunburnt, got covered in sandfly bites, and thoroughly enjoyed it all! The version thats sitting in a canoe, drifting in peace in warm carribean waters, just taking in the tropical island views: Caye Caulker. The usual destination in Belize along with Ambergris, and for good reason! I bussed from San Ignacio after a morning reading the Lonely Planet guide to Mexico and enjoying one of the biggest fruit platters ever, to Belize City, and met a very interesting guy on the bus who had just bought a puppy for ... read more

As we get off the H2o taxi and walk along the jetty, there is a mosaic sign greeting us. "Welcome to Caye Caulker, GO SLOW!" And this was the attitude toward life on the Is, chill out, relax, have a good time and go slow man!I look along the beach and i see palm trees, waterfront bars and reef, i think i'm going to enjoy C.C. We had originally planned to stay in Belize city but had been told it was shitty (& it was!) and to go straight to C.C. So we tagged along with most off the bus onto the h20 taxi to an Island of the coast of Belize, C.C.We planned to stay 2 days and ended up staying 5, this place was great. All sand streets, no cars, golf cart taxi's, walking ... read more

Yet another very early morning pick up by a shuttle bus to get me to Belize from Flores. The dilapidated bus is full of backpackers, took about 3 hours to get to the border, we were asked to carry all our belongings and walk accross the border after immigration and we hopped on the same bus into Belize City, I have to pay 20 quetzals to leave Guatemala but none in to Belize. Anotehr 2 or 3 hours later we arrived at the port in belize, we got dropped off and most of us went staright to the boat for Caye Caulker. We waited for about an hour before the boat left, a good 25 minute boat ride, turqouise blue waters, the reef seem to be shallow and lots of mangroves along the way, we finally ... read more

So, we went to Tikal yesterday and the day before. Pretty amazing spot. A huge mayan ruins sight with temples and the whole shabang. We camped there overnight, with our new travel group - Stina (Norway), Andrew (Australia), Josh (Denver) and Scotty (Australia). We're all very impressed we've been able to travel for so long together and not bite each others heads off. We went from Lanquin to Tikal and now here together, however sadly Josh had to leave today so the dynamic is a bit off. In any case, we woke up early the next morning in Tikal (5:30) to make it to the top of a temple for sunrise, however we were disappointed once realizing that it was overcast so there was no sunrise to be seen. However it was still neat to hear ... read more

The water taxi to Belize took about an hour. Leaving from a dock in Belize City, it eased through a tight canal with boats of all sorts on both sides, and passed shops that cater to the many cruiseships that arrive in the area, before taking to more open water at a higher speed. The water was not to rough, and the sun was out, so it was a pleasant trip in the 75 foot, passenger only, motor boat. We arrived in the afternoon sun at a older wooden dock and walked a few feet to the shore. The girls waited for their luggage, which was following on a second boat due to lack of room, and I hurried to Tina's backpackers, right near the dock, to check if there was space. There wasn't, and the ... read more

After a few days in the Mountains, Chris, Lily & I went to Cay Caulker which was about an hour boat ride off shore close to the main reef. The Cay was OK, small and intimate but nothing special. Howevere the sand flys were so bad they ran us off the beach. The snokleing was amazing on the reef. They only let a few boats have licenses and you must have a guide with you at all times to ensure the reefs protection, but it was by far the best snorkling I've ever done, and I met some one from Sonoma on the same tour boat!... read more

So Belize was a short but sweet trip, with us only spending about 5 days there. We travelled from Flores in Guatemala, a trip that took us a long time, cramped in another bus, with yet another annoyingly difficult border crossing. This time after asking at least 3 sets of people if we needed any money to cross and being told no each time we tried to cross the border with no money. Only for us to find out that we did need money and then they refused to let Luke cross (they had already stamped my passport so technically I could leave.) After lots of arguing and begging, they finally let us cross, taking some random US dollar noted we managed to find. So we headed straight for Belize city, and hopped onto the Caye ... read more

What a place to spend it, waking up on a paradise Island, with nothing planned till the afternoon! Awesome! Had the banana cake from cake man for breakfast, wandered around the island to try and find a t-shirt but as it was Xmas day toucan was closed :-( (oops!) Spent the day swinging on a hammock reading my book after a mojito in the cafe with Amy, Heather, Louis, Lara, Chester, Vicky and Carol. It had been very chilled and allowed me to get on the internet thanks to the tour guide leaving his mac in the hotel lobby so we could all have access to the internet!! Cheaply for once :-) Getting the water taxi in a bit and starting the 4 hour trip to San Ignacio, where hopefully I will go caving. Can't wait!! ... read more
