Days 1 & 2 - How to get from Canada to New Orleans in 40 easy steps. Step 1: Leave Canada on a Thursday afternoon and drive to Maine ahead of impending snow storm (and by snow storm, I mean flurries… because Maine didn’t get a snow storm and we’re from Canadia). Step 2: Kill time in Maine by eating, going to the mall to search for snow shoes, and going to Starbucks because the hotel at the airport is boring. Step 3: Check in at airport hotel. Be appreciative when the mister at the desk gives you a deal on the rate for no reason. Share chocolate with him as thanks. Step 4: Wonder why you have a couple of missed calls on your cell that was turned off coming from a US number – ... read more

Monday, December 23, 2013 (Eleuthera Island (Princess Cays) I was up at 5:00 am this morning so I could start writing my blog from our first day. Cindy and kids woke up at 7:45 am. There was no real rush to wake up earlier because our tours started later. After eating breakfast in the Symphony dining room, we gathered our belongings from our rooms and heading to our meeting place to exit our ship. This morning we needed to take a tender to Eleuthera Island (Princess Cays). Here is some information on Eleuthera Island (Princess Cays). This island in located in the Bahamas’ and is an exclusive port for Princess Cruises. The entire island is 100 miles long and 2 miles wide. Princess Cruises owns 30 acres of the island. They say that Princess Cays, when ... read more

Mantis Shrimp with eggs David Sanchez had found a mantis shrimp with eggs and shared with Steve the day before. Steve took me to it today but the mantis was very shy in the hole. I moved on and run into Diane who showed me a different color garden eel. I spent some time with them. There was one red one within the yellow ones. Diane told me later that it was not mating colors that it could be a different species. I saw 2 with holes very close to each other and I saw them touching faces. My photo is not so good but I got proof of life. As I got close the smaller one went into the hole and never went out again..and I didn’t feel like waiting for it to go back ... read more

HALF MOON CAY, BAHAMAS AND ONE DAY AT SEA PASSING HAITI—Tuesday and Wednesday, November 19-20, 2013 Half Moon Cay--I woke up when the ship dropped anchor this morning. This small island in the Bahamas is owned and operated by Holland America Cruise lines. Valerie’s shoulder was bothering her this morning so decided to first soak in a hot tub before disembarking the ship. Tendered to shore with Christina and Paul about 10:30 and then walked up a path to the information desk. The information we had gotten on-line said that there was a nature trail that went out to a bird sanctuary and we thought that would be a good thing to look into. The woman at the desk said that storms had decimated the bird sanctuary but that there was still a nature trail and ... read more

Another day, another Bahamian island. In less of a rush to go ashore today as the sun is out and I am eager to grab a couple of loungers, have an early breakfast and soak up some rays, as all my friends tell me the weather in Spain has taken a turn on the cold side. Did the 'German' thing and put our towels on the sunbeds and had the healthiest breakfast of the trip, no fried food and no bread, just fresh fruit, cold meats and cheeses and very enjoyable it was too. Alex stuck with tradition with a piled high plate! Lay in a sheltered spot out of the wind and worked on our tans until the tempation to explore the island Of Grand Bahama became too much and we hopped off the ship ... read more

Up early again, excited to arrive in the port of Nassau. I remember staying in Nassau with BA and the crew hotel overlooked the beach toward the port, I used to get up early to watch the massive cruise ships manoeuvring their way through the barrow channel, often five or more ships arriving after each other. Poor Alex wasn't getting a lay in this trip! Off for breakfast the wandered off the ship for a look around the shops in Nassau. After two minutes in the famous straw market, got bored with the calls of "hey pretty lady you want to buy something?" if you so much as glanced at anything on the stall. Wandered along Bay St and found...wait for it...the Havaiana shop, a whole shop dedicated to flip flops in a wonderful array of ... read more

Superb sleep in the amazingly comfortable bed, woke early to strange nosies I wasn't used to, Alex slept through them all! Couldn't resist opening the curtains for a peek outside and found us opposite a small island with white beaches and the bluest sea ever. Tried to get back to sleep but excitement took over much to Alex's dismay, up and at it for breakfast by the pool and to jump on the next available tender boat to the island. The island is owned by Norwegian cruise lines and boasts bars, shops, stalls, bbq area and even mini open buses to take you on a tour of the island. Unfortunately the weather for our four days on the cruise was not the best but although quite cloudy it was still around 86 degrees whatever that is ... read more

The Turks and Caicos islands consist of 40 islands and cays, eight of which are inhabited. The islands are located 550 miles southeast of Miami Florida just below the Bahamas chain and just to the east of Cuba and also the island of Dominican Republic and Haiti. Interesting to know that the turks and Caicos are located in the Atlantic Ocean, not the Caribbean. Best thing to do in this island is to do snorkel on the pristine coral reef and see stingray at play. We also drive around on a guided tour and saw several 18th century churches, beautiful bermudian -style buildings and salt ponds. while we were driving, we saw wild horses and donkeys freely roaming the streets. We also enjoy the 150+ year old working light house and visit "the salt house" a ... read more
