Central America Caribbean » Bahamas » Exuma June 3rd 2013

We planned a vacation from CA and narrowed our options down to either Curacao, Belize or the Bahamas and opted for the Bahamas. Phase II of operation vacation was which island to visit, I knew that Nassau and NP were out of the question but the deeper I looked the more islands I found to visit in the Bahamas. After some whittling we came down to Bimini, Eluthera and Exuma and eventually settled on the latter. Exuma did not disappoint (other than some rain) and during our visit we stayed outside of Georgetown and visited local beaches, Stocking Island and did the Cay tour to the north of the island. We had a great time on this very relaxed and slow paced island (restaurants closed at 9:30 pm) just milling about and seeing what we could ... read more

17/5/13 Nassau, Bahamas Avast there me hearties! Up, fed and out, Nassau awaits, the proper pirate stronghold, home of Blackbeard and other fearsome and fascinating buccaneers of the high seas. Arrrr Jim lad this be the place I wants to see. First though we had to get off, walk the plank I mean along the pier, go through the welcome centre, run the gauntlets of taxi touts, hair braiding ladies, tour touts and eventually escape through the gates and out into the city. Once more the line of jewellery and souvenir shops but we had a map and things to see so we carried onwards. We had a quick look in the straw market, which was basically a large building full of craft and souvenir stalls with very forceful ladies trying to get you to buy ... read more

Most likely. My soda cup for once is empty and I only manage a couple of drops of fluid before knocking it over and waking Peter.I am fully awake a few hours later and feel better after the first cup of coffee that Peter has retrieved from Cafe Promenade. It's hot outside on the balcony as the starboard side of the ship is now facing east in the mornings.Breakfast this morning is at Johnny Rockets for a change. Allure and Oasis are the only 2 ships where Johnny Rockets serve breakfast as it is normally just lunch there. I have a lovely ... read more

Geo: 25.06, -77.33After a good nights sleep we awake as Allure drifts into the Bahamian port of Nassau. The hot tropical sun is starting its climb along with the temperatures. We head down to the main dining room for breakfast. Suitably nourished we grab our things and head towards the Solarium at the front of the ship. It's an adult only area and a nice place to relax and chill. The place is deserted as a lot of people have gone ashore. Having visited Nassau more than once we had decided not to go on any shore excursions or tours this time and take advantage of a relatively quiet ship. Peter does venture off briefly to take some pictures of Allure and the other 2 ships moored alongside us, Disney Dream and Carnival Ecstasy. We take dip ... read more

With my blogs, I aim to capture out of the ordinary experiences, travel off the beaten path, provide insight to local culture, and highlight alternative perspectives. From a worldly, cultured standpoint, the epitome of a conventional, predictable, and an uninspiring escapade would be to take a cruise. However, I am sure that if you stumbled across a four night cruise to the Bahamas for less than $250 leaving from a nearby port, you couldn’t resist either. Never having been on a cruise, I had some preconceived expectations. I imagined I would spend the entirety of the cruise on the top deck, in a lawn chair with a Miami Vice in my hand (half piña colada half strawberry daiquiri). Occasionally I would dip in the pool to cool off and if that got old, I would read ... read more

Yep, Bahamas! Those of you who know us, know that we are not really resort kind of people. In fact, we very often speak critically of people who travel to another country only to never leave the resort and as a result, never experience the actual country. Resorts always seemed to us to be overcrowded, overcharged, overdone, and lacking in any real sense of history, culture, and authenticity. There is the argument that resort guests are offered daily excursions, activities, and tours which can provide the opportunity for history, culture, and all things authentic. Then, there is the counter argument that such excursions, tours, activities, and the like are limited and superficial. And so, the argument can continue indefinitely. We have always preferred to travel the road less travelled, to steer away from resorts and their ... read more
