It's time Jan got a little payback for taking such great care of me after having total hip replacement surgery on December 27th. Without her help I would have gone to a rehab facility rather than home. It sure was nice to go home. She treated my surgical wound every day until the staples were removed and the doctor was amazed how well it had healed. She waited on me hand and foot...literally. I couldn't put a sock or shoe on my right foot for over 3 weeks. So, this little trip is a bit of a thank you to her. We have done quite a few winter trips to nice warm places for longer than this one in the past years since my retirement and we were planning a trip to Tahiti and Bora Bora ... read more

Geo: 24.3024, -76.5398Cambridge Cay is a mooring field within the boundaries of Exuma Land and Sea Park. In my opinion, it is truly a little slice of heaven! I loved this place! There were trails to walk / hike, plenty of snorkelling, and it is protected all 'round. So it is always peaceful in the anchorage. Unfortunately, my underwater camera decided that it was no longer waterproof while we were there, so the number of photos since Cambridge Cay is rather limited. We snorkelled several times here and saw some great sea life: Sea Turtles, baby conch, Ocean Triggerfish, Nassau Grouper, Eagle Rays, Angelfish, Queen Angels, Squirrel fish, Parrotfish…just to name a few!... read more

Central America Caribbean » Bahamas February 18th 2014

Geo: 24.3042, -76.5648We anchored off of Bell Island for one night before heading around the corner to Little Bell. Bell Island is privately owned by the Aga Khan. There is a marina being built there and ships, barges and equipment were arriving daily. The sand that they've dredged out has all been piled high on the far side of the island (you can see it from LIttle Bell / Cambridge Cay). The amount of lights on this island at night make you wonder if it shines like a beacon up to outer space! There must be twenty wifi signals at full strength, but they are all locked - Doh! C'mon, when you've got that much money, can't you just open up one signal so that we can check weather?!? :)The trip around Bell Island was lovely. ... read more

Geo: 24.6014, -76.821We spent two nights at Norman's Cay in the anchorage just off the beach club. The new owners of McDuff's (Beach Club) are prepping for their grand opening, but in the meantime they were doing a "soft opening". In other words, if you walk right in and sit down, they won't turn you away - but otherwise, they are still closed. They were willing to prepare dinner for your party if you made a reservation in the afternoon, but that's the way it is in most places going through the Cays. It was a beautiful resort that they have obviously re-done recently. Everything was so clean and modern. We spoke with one of the new partners who was telling us about their plans. They are expanding the runway, looking to bring in a customs/immigrations ... read more

Geo: 24.7498, -76.8372I got to see the iguanas!!! But boy! The 'price' we paid to see them was less than worth it. Allen's Cay, although beautiful, was very uncomfortable. At least I thought so. Maybe it was just the days while we were there, but the swift current, with the opposing wind, and a less-than-desirable holding ground made for one VERY sleepless night! This was the first spot (since this trip began) that we had to set, and reset the anchor numerous times. The anchorage was packed full of boats and so to find a spot that would allow for swinging room was already a challenge, but then to find one that actually had sand for our anchor to dig into was a whole other story. We probably re-anchored a dozen times at minimum. Not fun. ... read more

Geo: 25.0265, -77.5446Ahhhh!!! It's a NEW DAY!!!The rolling lasted for a total of about 60 hours…but it's finally gone! Since about 8am today we've enjoyed a calm harbour and beautiful sunshine and warmth again! That's what it's all about out here…taking every day as it comes! And today called for a swim! After doing a bit of clean-up (Tony put away all the extra anchor and rode that was "staged" on the foredeck "just in case"!!) (I scrubbed the transom of the boat AFTER the pictures!) a swim was in order, followed by a warm fresh water rinse with my solar shower! The sun's out, we are back to "normal", and we are now figuring out when to make our jump to Allen's Cay to go see the Iguanas!!! (Go ahead! Click on it!)After Allen's Cay I'm really looking ... read more

Geo: 25.0265, -77.5446Waiting out weather in a harbour that is not very well protected. Over thirty six hours of pitching and rolling so far…and it's still going. And to boot, the anchor locked blew shut onto Tony's head. Feb. 13th, 2014 – Lyford Cay, New Providence (Near Nassau)Hello Family and Friends,We are presently anchored in Lyford Cay on the west side of New Providence (for those who are geographically challenged, let's just say "Nassau" - even though we are NOT in the city.) We swore we wouldn't go to Nassau - it's big, built up, and it has a Starbucks. That's not what we are looking for out here! In Miami, sure…but not out here! Here, we want to experience the local cuisine, to meet the locals, celebrate their culture. (Although I'm THRILLED to have found ... read more

Geo: 25.0265, -77.5446Another gorgeous sail from Alder Cay to Lyford Cay. We stayed here for a few nights, waiting out strong winds. It's sunny, and beautiful, except for the winds that are blowing at 20 knots. Here, there are big orange starfish hanging out under the boat! ... read more

Geo: 25.8125, -77.9008North of Bullock's Harbour we passed Little Stirrup Cay and Great Stirrup Cay where the cruise ships bring their passengers to their "Private Island" for a beach day and for many water sports. We actually sailed right past one of the cruise ships that was anchored there for the day. We came around the top of both islands and then headed south on the eastern side of the Berries and slipped into the anchorage just below Great Stirrup Cay. We were anchored right off of Goat Cay. The Sea-doos that the cruise ship passengers rented whipped around us all afternoon. We took it in stride. Out here, it's an honour to be considered "part of the scenery". :)We also took the dingy over to Great Stirrup Cay to walk up to the lighthouse and ... read more
