We left No Name harbour Wednesday March 12th at 6:30 am in the dark. We traveled slowly through Biscayne Bay and were able to put up sails when we came out of the Florida channels at 7:30 am as the sun came up. The ocean was quite confused for the first little bit until we got to deep water. It was a beautiful sunny day, 13 knot steady winds and no gusts. We had all sail out. We were averaging about 7 knots. The Gulf Stream was very narrow on Wednesday and less powerful than usual, so our only indication we were in it was the fact we had to correct our course about 10 degrees. The winds picked up as the day went on, rising to 18 knots steady and gusting up to 25 knots. ... read more

Castaway Cay is like marmite for the crew on this ship. You either love it or you hate it. I can honestly say that I despised to place during my first contract. Possibly due to the fact that it was the morning-after head ache that we all had to endure after our infamous thursday late nights. Nothing is less appealing than having to work on a hot and sticky island , covered in sand and 4 year olds screaming in your ears. This, I am sure, anyone can do without! But it is this island that seems to attract our cruisers. Nothing says "exclusive" more than a privately owned island by his royal Mickeyness , where the passengers of one cruise ship can have all to themselves for the entire day! So, it's the 100m dash ... read more

Geo: 24.25, -76.5March 1st, 2014 – Loss of a Dear FriendHi all,We received word yesterday that Tony's dear friend Paul passed away. This is horrible news and we feel so helpless being so far removed from all of Paul's family and friends at home. It was Paul who did the trip south with Tony 25 years ago, and Tony has been reliving the route and reminiscing at all the spots that they visited together. As we continue south, we will continue to think of Paul every step of the way. After all, Tony's opening line to the locals on each and every island has been, "Twenty-five years ago…" and he would tell the same story, over and over, about how he and his buddy Paul sailed these waters…and spoke of the adventures they had...We are at ... read more

(I've been too busy or (truthfully) lazy to get this blog entry done, so it's long after the trip was over. I decided to finish it for Jan, Dan and Marilyn) Our last full day in Paradise we rented a boat and captain for 4 hours. Our captain was Too Tall Derrick, a real nice guy. He took us on a tour of Paradise Island and a couple of the other islands. Once again, it was a perfect day, sunny and 81 degrees. After seeing the two islands where they filmed the classic TV series "Gilligan's Island," Too Tall asked if we wanted to do a little fishing. After about 10 minutes, Dan and I passed the poles to the wives and that's when fish were caught. Marilyn pulled in a fish every couple minutes. They ... read more

Geo: 24.1005, -76.4024Black Point Settlement is known to cruisers for two things: Laundry and Free RO Water (Reverse Osmosis) Prior to being a cruiser myself, I did not realize how excited I would get about these things! So before we even arrived, I was excited about doing laundry and filing up the water tanks! Once I got here, we found the many other little things that make Black Point a wonderful place, like...- Scorpio's which served up a great "Cruiser's" BBQ the first night we were here.- Lorraine's which serves up great bahamian home cooking.- Ida (who owns the laundromat and will do you laundry for you if you want) also provides hot showers. $4.00 for 8 minutes of wonderfully hot water!- Ida also cooks: 6 Conch Fritters for $1.00, Beef and Chicken Patties at $2.00 ... read more

After lounging around a good part of the day swimming and getting some sun, we decided that we would visit the Rum Bahamas Festival in Nassau. It was a weekend long event with many rum distillers showing their wares. It was at a very interesting location, Fort Charlotte. The fort dates back to British Colonial times, built in the late 1700's. It's built on a hill that's the highest point around Nassau. It's kind of a ruin now and a cool location for the festival. The whole festival wound around the fort. There were many booths offering rum samples and all kinds of tropical rum drinks. There were a few bands playing Bahamian music and some other performers roving around. After sampling a few of the rums, Dan and I went for a drink made from ... read more

Geo: 24.1833, -76.4587Just when I thought the iguanas were cool, I found swimming pigs! These guys hang out on the beach all day, and each time a dinghy or boat approaches, they charge for the water in search of handouts! They swim right up to the side of your boat. Being in an inflatable dinghy means you must keep some distance. We were told their hoofs will pierce the dinghy as they try to climb on!Staniel Cay was just around the point from Big Majors Spot, so a little further in the dinghy, and we were in town. We didn't walk around to the largest of the grocery stores, but we found everything that we needed between the Pink Store and the Blue Store. It was funny, they were side by side, but one would have ... read more

Modern air travel is miraclulous and miserable. If you're old enough to remember when all airplanes had propellers, which I am, it's amazing to consider that you can leave 30 degrees and snow and be in 83 degrees in sun in a matter of a couple hours if...everything goes well. That's where the miserable part can come in. It seems from our experience that it's damn near a 50-50 proposition for everything to go as scheduled, especially when you can't get direct flights. Changing planes just about guarantees one of them will be late for some reason. Yesterday it was the flight from Charlotte to Nassau. Thunderstorms in Charlotte delayed our departure for 2 hours. Then when we finally got to Atlantis, they had no record of our reservation booked through booking.com. Two more hours later, ... read more
