Geo: -41.7581, 171.602I can feel the wind blowing through my hair – all ¾ of an inch of it - as the skies clear up and we hit the rugged west coast of the South Island. We are scooting up the coast, staying one night at each location until we get to the point at which we head slightly inland and north. It is exhilarating, freeing, joyful! We have had a run of glorious sunshine and cool breezes and all we do is drive, locate a walk or two to view various landscapes and stunning vistas and stay in unique and friendly backpacker hostels. Our favourites are Global Village and Beaconstone Eco Lodge. I now ask each hostel if they have a cat (to which I am intensely allergic), guiding our decisions about places to stay. ... read more

Geo: -44.85, 168.388Queenstown is known for its adrenaline-inducing adventures; one can find anything from skydiving to bungy jumping or parabungy to white-water rafting. Not being inclined towards this craziness at this stage of our lives, we drove through Queenstown, north for about an hour, through the sleepy town of Glenorchy and over to Kinloch Lodge. Although the weather was mostly cold and rainy during our 3-day stay, we managed to do a couple of nearby walks. We used the time and location to get laundry done, cook some warm comfort foods, watch movies in the cozy movie room, hang out with other travellers, read, and do other quiet activities. The hot tub was sweet! Sitting in an afternoon rain overlooking the lake with the surrounding mountains casting their shadows down upon us was epic. Not exactly ... read more

Geo: -45.4151, 167.718A bit of frustration in the wind here in New Zealand for us travellers. The past few days have been a comedy of errors it seems. After leaving the Dunedin area, we headed down to the Catlins which is the southernmost part of New Zealand. We had planned on staying 3 nights at a backpacker hostel that was situated just off a wide crescent beach. After driving past all the major viewpoints and hikes along the way due to the blustery, rainy weather, we arrived at our destination with our sights set on a restful 3 days with no driving and maybe, just maybe, time to read and chill out. We were enjoying the company of a British couple while making and eating our dinner when a big, furry cat walked into the common ... read more

Geo: -45.8125, 170.604Dunedin is a curious city, described in our travel guide as 'exuding artsy, boozy ambiance' (i.e. our first sightings were numerous interestingly dressed college girls, carrying their own bottle of wine walking down the main street preparing for a Friday night on the town). We showed up at Hogwartz Hostel, high up on a hill with quite a climb up a staircase shrouded by bushes and vines, lugging all our groceries and bags into an old Bishop's home and up another majestic flight of stairs to our room. We had been 'offline' for most of our time in NZ so when we saw that the local library had Wifi we decided to make contact with the outside world and do some visa preparation for future travels. We dove into the library at about 10:00am ... read more

Geo: -44.0074, 170.483New Zealand is expensive! We realized that the travel life of no cooking had to come to an abrupt stop. We cannot possibly afford to eat in restaurants. Each day here we have adjusted our practices…we've even eliminated our daily purchased cup of coffee; we've bought coffee mugs and are making our own now. Wine and beer are no longer a daily given. Private bathrooms are just too dear for this budget. Thankfully, we have stopped here with the cutbacks; we are in hostels but I am not ready to sleep in a dorm (although Jim would probably consider it). Even Internet access is not all that available and is costly so our blog entries while in New Zealand have been less frequent.New Zealand is a nature-lover's paradise. We are hiking daily and in ... read more

Geo: -17.8, 177.42We are working our adaptability muscles. Every time we drop into a new city or country with new surroundings, climate, currency, perhaps language and if not language an accent or habits that are unfamiliar it requires us to let go of what we are comfortable with and embrace the new. Each time I can feel my mind, body and soul aching for the more familiar then settling into the excitement and challenge of another place. It's all good. In fact I really dislike it when I am feeling stuck or too attached; it is a sign to change things up. After our first 10 hours of travel, we arrived in LA with the intention of rendezvousing with my brother. Without any cell phone or access to internet and having sent him only our itinerary ... read more

Geo: 44.6729, -63.9195I think Jim and I are pretty good travelers but man, oh man, our own bed sure felt good that first night we climbed into it! Well, and every night since then, too. Am I getting old? Resistant to change? Is the draw of comfort, family, friends, home, vegetables/good coffee/chocolate so powerful that it will create inertia? Possibly, but not likely. As we prepare to leave for New Zealand, I sit here watching and listening to Tropical Storm Sandy. It was a full moon on Monday and with the storm surge, the water is very high with Atlantic ocean water splashing on our lawn. We were lucky not to have got the full brunt of this potential 'Frankenstorm' as the weather people called it. However, I must say it is such a delight sitting in ... read more

Geo: -12.0393, -77.0801Twenty-four hours in Lima was not a lot of time to see this Peruvian capital city. Arriving late in the evening, we took a long taxi drive to the Miraflores area of the city. The expressway runs along the waterfront of the city with an ominous 200 foot cliff edge lining most of one side of the road and a beach on the Pacific ocean on other. Even in the dark the sights were quite captivating.Miraflores is an upscale suburb in eastern Lima with a real multicultural feel. I was reminded of parts of Montreal here. We started our day by walking down to the water – at last…seaside! As we neared the waterfront, we passed a beautiful, erect glass building that turns out is the Mariott Hotel and is a signature modern building ... read more

Geo: -16.39, -71.53Health is always potentially a concern when travelling. We have been really healthy on this trip besides some minor skin irritations, bites and normal aches and pains. However, during our first night in Arequipa at Casa de Sillar I had a mysterious allergy attack. I woke up at 3:30am from vivid dreams of cats to which I am deathly allergic. My sinuses were totally blocked and my face looked like I had been on the losing end of a boxing match with all the puffiness and swollen closed eyes but without the bruising. Problem was, I had no idea what I was allergic to - was it the strange pillow? Perhaps the bed or room had been sprayed with something? Maybe cats lived here when they had no hotel guests? Thankfully my lungs didn't ... read more

Geo: -15.6452, -71.6055Altitude. For travellers, it is a big deal. Everyone talks about it, how high they have been, who is sick and who has no difficulties at all. We normally live at sea level. When I visit my sisters or parents who live between 700 & 1600 meters, I notice the dryness in the air and the shortness of my breath. I also have some difficulty sleeping for a few nights. Well, as my t-shirt from Boulder, CO says, 'sea level is for sissies'. We have been living at altitudes between 2500 and 4500 meters since we left the Amazon in early Sept. It's some dry up here! I always feel like I am trying to catch my breath and that is without exertion. What comes with altitude around here are lots of hills so ... read more
