Geo: 0.233333, -78.2667Oh my! Our Spanish doesn't seem to be improving much. We repeat over and over, "no comprendo" and it's rather embarrassing. Maybe attending a Spanish school is in order at some point although we (or at least Donna) have talked about this since we travelled in Guatemala in 2001 and still have not done it.Accumulating 'stuff' during our travels, especially early on in the trip, is not what we want to do but visiting the largest market in Ecuador on its biggest day of the week is a temptation that Donna cannot ignore. Like treating Jim to photograph a feast of colour, faces and activity Donna is compelled to buy 'un poquito'. So, off we went for hours of fun. Ecuadorian people are so friendly and bargaining here is a very different and pleasant ... read more

Geo: -1.37865, -75.8716Life in the jungle is simple - especially when we are being looked after so well at the Napo Wildlife Centre and our mission is to see wildlife. During lunch one day, Ryan - the visiting filmmaker - excitedly pointed out the river otters fishing in the lake while a 15-foot long caiman hovered around looking awfully hungry.A visit to two local clay licks demonstrated a frenzy of hundreds of parrot and parakeets scrambling to ingest clay (that helps them to process the toxins from the seeds they eat) while not getting eaten themselves by any number of predators. The scenes were fascinating. Our evening canoe to see more otters and, once dark, the shimmering red eyes of the baby caimen was beyond description. We were fortunate during our Amazon stay - we saw 7 ... read more

Geo: -1.37865, -75.8716We just spent 5 days in Yasuni National Park in the heart of the Amazon at the Napo Wildlife Center (NWC). We will describe our first few days in the Amazon in this posting and finish it off in another posting. We were greeted in the airport by our naturalist guide Juan Carlos immediately upon our arrival in Coca, taking a bus to our launch point on the Napo river - one of the direct tributaries of the Amazon river. As we waited for our motor boat, Jim took the opportunity to capture some pictures that let us know we were in a unique part of the world. That two-hour boat trip was filled with anticipation as we sat in awe of the river and its currents, the jungle along the shore and the barges ... read more

Geo: -0.759999, -90.33Well, we sure hope we don't get behind in our blog entries too often because trying to remember all that has happened during these action-packed days becomes difficult for a couple of old fogies like us!We spent our last few days in Galapagos piling one experience upon another including kayaking and our last hours on Isla Isabella snorkelling amongst a large group of 30 or so sea turtles. The water was a touch warmer (although still not warm) which made it that much more enjoyable. We packed up our gear, took a boat over to another part of the harbour and walked a trail of lava rock with more iguanas, sea lions and white tipped sharks than you could imagine seeing in one place. After lunch, our group of 16 loaded into our boat which ... read more

Geo: -0.744303, -90.3117We just got back to Quito from the Galapagos this evening and we leave for the Amazon early tomorrow morning. Not sure we're going to get a chance to write the final entry on our time on the islands until we re-emerge from the jungle... which we hope will be next weekend. Thought we'd at least share an image tonight of one of the faces from the last week we won't soon forget. Some narly eh?!... read more

Geo: -1.05463, -91.0107Wow! We have had a very exciting few days getting to and around the Galapagos Islands. We are enjoying the 14 other Intrepid tour 'mates' who come from England, Ireland, USA, New Zealand & Canada - all part of the wildlife. Early on Sunday morning we made our way to the airport and had an uneventful flight to Isla San Cristobel. Our first experience with the wildlife was a walk along the boardwalk of the sleepy town. There were sea lions lounging around everywhere - on park benches, on the sidewalk, in the park - blissfully napping on the sunny Sunday afternoon. We also went on an exhilarating bike ride from up in the highlands all the way down to the beach where we swam and saw more sea lions.Monday was mostly snorkelling. The ... read more

Geo: -0.223151, -78.5127Some technological difficulties have challenged us and now we think we are able to become true bloggers! Sorry for the delay, folks. We are alive and well and have even skyped our 'baby' today from a cafe in Quito. How cool is that?! Last time we traveled for an extended period, some 28 years ago, all we had was snail mail and an occasional phone call from a post office that had 3 second delays after each person spoke! So here we sit drinking coffee in a cafe listening to a live blues band in the restaurant/entertainment center in Quito at 10:30am.Here's a quick run down of our first few days of our trip:After a full nonstop day and night on Tuesday doing last minute preparations including our final rabies vaccination, money pick-up, a ... read more
