Geo: 20.9691, 101.4Bumpy roads - literally. No, this is not some metaphor for a stage in our travel or the state of our marriage. This leg of our trip was characterized by long, hot, and very bumpy journeys. It was one after the other and even when we expressly requested air conditioned transportation, open windows was the vendors' interpretation of AC. And when we made assumptions about what kind of travel we were going on, boy, were we surprised! I guess that is what happens when you make assumptions (assume = make an ass out of u and me). Surprises go with Asia and less-travelled areas. In this part of northwestern Laos, not only is the infrastructure not here, the vehicles are more basic and you need to pay a lot if you want something better. ... read more

Geo: 19.8841, 102.142Luang Prabang was the right place at the right time for us. It is a quiet city with no shortage of charm and we found a delightful place to stay (Villa Chitdara). We liked it so much we stayed in this town for 4 days each at the beginning and ending of our time in Laos.Filled with temples and monks, this World Heritage Site's most intriguing attraction is the 6:30am daily 'alms' where the monks walk in silence through the streets while locals and some tourists give them offerings of rice. There are times, as well, when needy children collect rice from the monks. Jim was fascinated/obsessed by this ceremony and got up almost every morning to photograph it.We met a few of the novice monks. Vixsai chatted with us one morning before starting ... read more

Geo: 22.3945, 104.056What a gift our trip to Sapa was! On our own again without our friend Mary, we arrived in Sapa by the night train from Hanoi at 5:30am to cool temperatures. Well, cool to us; they were nothing like the frigid (-35 degrees), snowy weather many of our friends had reported from home in Canada. Upon arrival at our hotel, Fansipan View, we immediately became friends with the manager, Thuyen and her Dutch friend Monique. Next thing we knew we were enjoying dinner seated in a circle on the floor surrounding a hotpot at Thuyen's sister's home acquainting ourselves with sisters, mother, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews. How extraordinary was our time in Sapa, as we got to know Thuyen, her husband Quang and their baby daughter Anh Ngoc! After that lovely dinner, a couple ... read more

Geo: 21.0245, 105.841At first we didn't like Hanoi, however, it did grow on us. It is impossible to describe the chaotic madness of the city but once you hook into its rhythm it has a kind of curious charm that is quite compelling. Wandering, or should I say dodge-walking, the streets of Hanoi for two days took us to some of the tourist sites including a memorable experience at the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. With guards snapping at us to queue here, march forward there, keep silent, hats off, hands out of pockets, we formed a solemn procession that passed by Uncle Ho's preserved body (that returns to Russia for 2 months a year to be restored). Here For a Good Time Not Ha Long TimeHa Long Bay, in the Gulf of Tonkin, includes some 1,600 ... read more

Geo: 17.6152, 106.316This was a trip well worth the effort of diverting from the beaten path of most visitors to Vietnam. The national park tour, our accommodations and the beauty of the surrounding rice paddies and villages made this a memorable stop.We had received an email from the Phong Nha Farm Stay with many instructions and information aimed at managing our expectations and ensuring we realized this was an out-of-the-way spot. Taking the very comfortable 5-hour train ride from Da Nang to Dong Hui and transferring to a car for another hour drive, we arrived in a tiny village. We crept our way down little lane ways until they opened to a stunning view of rice paddies on our right and a beautiful big and lively hotel on our left. People were obviously having fun and ... read more

Geo: 15.875, 108.336Since we had taken a 'sleeper bus' during the day journey to Mui Ne, we thought we were well prepared to take a sleeper bus overnight from Mui Ne to Hoi An. When will we learn that nothing is predictable in Asia or in the way we travel? The bus ride was 17.5 hours long (2:30pm-8:00am). The highlights included:beautiful coastline scenery (fishing villages, ocean landscape, rice paddies, sand dunes)scary road conditions and trafficnon-stop, penetrating blow-horn bus and car honkinga 'dinner break' of 14 minutes (due to delayed arrival for bus change). Since there was insufficient time to order food in a restaurant, we tried a street stall bang mi (baguette sandwich with, amongst other things, pate) that was frightening to see how it was prepared and what went ... read more

Geo: 17.0849, 107.111I feel a sense of space and contentment. Warm breezes, a beach side hut, swimming in big waves, and delicious food everywhere we eat. Pho is the national soup, eaten at breakfast and other times of the day. The stock is the key. I've tried pho many times and had the best pho stock at a local, sand-floored restaurant here. It was absolutely amazingly delicious! Food in Vietnam is the best....We share laughter daily with the Vietnamese people - from our favourite corn vendor to the very friendly guy who works at the clothing store next door to us. Mui Ne is becoming the kite-surfing center in the world and we were mesmerized by the activity.Exhilaration.Above - colourful half moons dancing in the windBelow - speed, rooster tails of ocean sprayA graceful collection of ... read more

Geo: 10.7592, 106.662Our good friend Mary has joined up with us in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC or Saigon). She arrived safely late at night and we were on the go from the moment we got up in the morning. No jet lag for her! It's so nice having someone with whom I can chat and giggle. It gives Jim more time to be alone and it's nice for us to have a fresh face in the mix.Wow!! What a bustling city Saigon is! We thought the traffic of Phnom Penh was crazy. Well, Saigon's is faster, there is more of it, far fewer bicycles, no tuk-tuks and more aggression. I made the mistake of doing what I would naturally do when stepping out in traffic and realizing it was unsafe - I bee-lined it back ... read more

Geo: 10.61, 104.18Two very important parts of our lives and what do they have in common? Nothing except they are 'top of mind' in this blog entry. Read on…Kampot is described in our guide book as "…this charming riverside town with its relaxed atmosphere and a run-down French architectural legacy". What I experienced upon arrival was yet another dirty city but I warmed up to it. Feeling worn out from our gastrointestinal flu and disappointed by the discrepancy between the town we thought we were arriving at and the town we experienced, we found a beautiful place to stay on our second day; a quiet garden, a spacious clean room, a DVD player and a wide choice of DVDs and unlimited fruit shakes at our fingertips. Geo: 12.45, 107.2Ahhh Cambodia... Cambodia time means anything except the real time - your guess is as good as mine. Cambodia descriptions are so colourful - like the menu item 'vegetarian breakfast (extra cost for sausages and hotdogs)'. It is a country of smiling friendly people who want to understand you and often don't but pretend they do then nothing happens when you think it will happen. Gotta love it!We are beginning to visit the far reaches of Cambodia - less people, fewer tourists, less English spoken, rougher roads, reduced facilities. For instance, there were only mototaxis (motor scooters) to get us from the Nature Lodge to the town where we were being picked up by the Elephant Valley Project (EVP). So, my driver put my big backpack in front of him, I sat behind him ... read more
