Geo: 44.6462, -63.5739Home at last....for the second time since we returned from South Africa on May 10. Let me back up a bit. Our last 24 hours in Cape Town comprised of:a delicious meal of tapas and wine at 'Fork' a disturbing and well acted play about the complexities of life in South Africa post-apartheida scary 45-minute walk home from the play to our lodge - nothing happened but it did feel like we were tempting fate on our last evening in a city where everyone said to always take a cab after darka slow morning with Jim, a bit of shopping, a pedicure and haircut for me then out to the airport for our much anticipated flight home!We endured a very long trip from Cape Town to Halifax (through Dubai) - 35 hours of travel ... read more

Africa » Lesotho May 8th 2013

Geo: -29.61, 28.2336Lesotho is a unique country in Africa. It has never been colonized although was a protectorate of Britain. Their famous leader King Moshoeshoe united many previously fighting Basotho tribes to maintain ownership of the Kingdom in the Sky. They fought Zulu warriors and the Dutch and British. The result of this remarkable history, and obviously more complex than described here, is what appears to be happy people who are very poor. The country has a very different feel from South Africa even though it is completely surrounded by its only neighbouring country, South Africa. We left the Drakensbergs, travelling through the Royal Natal and Golden Gate National Parks observing stunning mountainous scenery and stopping for a quick breakfast in the sweet and very busy little town of Clarens. The town was hosting a well-known off ... read more

Geo: -29.7908, 29.4945One might think we'd be trying to cram as many things in as we could before we leave but we are continuing on in our preferred rhythm of taking our time and immersing ourselves in a place. It feels to me that the more we cram, the less exercise we get because we end up being in some form of transportation for hours on end. So, what better place to do good hiking and soak up the scenery of the Drakensberg mountains in South Africa.A highlight of this week as we located ourselves in the southern, central and the northern regions of the Drakensbergs was the day trip up the Sani Pass into the small country of Lesotho. Our entertaining and knowledgeable guide Matt Chaplin, kept us intrigued throughout the day. His obvious love ... read more

Geo: -32.1179, 28.9975It's hard to describe South Africa. It feels like a country that has multiple personalities; each one aware the other exists yet very separate from one another. As we drove from Cape Town through the Garden Route, into Addo and then up to the Wild Coast we encountered first California-like seaside resorts where the white people play and are separated from the poverty-stricken townships where the black people live in order to work. Past Addo, we experienced the chaotic nature of towns where we were the only white people in sight. People were walking, chatting, buying, selling - there was activity everywhere. Then we drove past large, orderly farms with big equipment and onto the wild coast where families worked, bent over using hand tools while tending to their small plot of subsistence land. ... read more

Geo: -33.5474, 25.7269Oh! - how I love the coast! Wilderness is a bohemian town set above a long, beautiful beach along the Garden Route of South Africa. We settled into our lodge high above the beach then went for a deliciously long walk on the never-ending beach with waves 7-deep cresting in the bay. Searching for something interesting for dinner, we stumbled upon a Friday night market in the town centre with a pathway of booths selling food, some live folk music playing and a hopping outdoor bar that boasted the best ribs anywhere. Ah, but I had those in Kratie, Combodia…how could they have them here in Wilderness, South Africa?Given the bar was so busy, we asked a man and his young son if we could join them at their table. They graciously invited us ... read more

Geo: -33.5928, 22.2025All I want to do is STOP! What I mean to say is, on the day-to-day level I just want to stay in one nice place for no less than three nights – one bed, no packing up, a day of taking stock, getting laundry done, repacking and doing whatever else I feel like doing. On the larger level, it means going home – not right away but darned soon. As of April 12, we are 4 weeks away from returning home; every day I make myself focus on enjoying whatever I am doing yet constantly in the background, my mind is doing the countdown…27 days, 26 days, etc. Jim says he could continue travelling endlessly. This brings me to a piece of information passed onto us during our meerkat adventure (I'll tell you ... read more
