South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Salar de Uyuni September 24th 2010

We got a night bus from La Paz to Uyuni which took around 12 hours and wouldn’t have been so bad if the last 3 hours of the journey hadn’t been on unpaved road! It was ridiculously bumpy considering this bus does this journey for tourists daily and there was no chance of any sleep on that part of ‘road’ - It was literally like sitting on a power plate with the setting to max! Anyway we arrived in Uyuni early in the morning ready to start our 3 day trip of Salar de Uyuni. Salar de Uyuni is located in the Southwest region of Bolivia near the Andes and Chile, and is the world’s largest salt flat at 4,086 sq miles. The Salar was formed as a result of transformations between several prehistoric lakes. It ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz September 21st 2010

We arrived in La Paz, capital of Bolivia - which is also the highest capital in the world, in the afternoon after coming by bus and boat from Copacabana on Lake Titicaca. As we started to drive through the beginning area of La Paz (Alto) we became quite worried that this was the main part- To say it looked like slums would be doing slums around the world an injustice. It was so busy and dirty, there were people everywhere, so many dogs, there were children and women begging, people trying to sell whatever they could, and it just generally felt a bit dodgy. We found out afterwards this was an area called El Alto which is the poor suburb of La Paz and basically a no go area for tourists - luckily we were not ... read more

First of all thanks to everyone who comments it’s great to know you are enjoying the blog and we love hearing from you! After another over-night bus (we are getting used to these now and quite liking them!) from Cusco we arrived (along with Mindy and Joel) at the Peru/Bolivia border around 7.30am. We got off the bus and headed through to passport control. We then realised we didn’t have any Bolivian currency on us and there was no cash point so with a mixture of Dollars, Euros, Pounds and a few Peruvian Soles that we found in our pockets and bags we managed to scrape together enough cash to exchange at the only money shop at the border for some Bolivianos and carry on through to passport control. After getting our passports stamped and filling ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu September 18th 2010

So we got woken up on day 3 at 6am (a lie in!) to start what was to be an easier day of trekking than the previous 2 days as it was only a few hours in the morning until we got to the camp at lunch where we would be staying until the next day. It was one of the South African sisters birthday this day and amazingly the chef had made not one but two actual birthday cakes! They were so good, god knows how he did that on a mountain though! So we had those for breakfast and we set off slowly as although Vic was now fine Scott was really ill with sickness, bad stomach, headaches and dizzyness. He didn't eat breakfast and we were worried that he wouldn't be able to ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Inca Trail September 14th 2010

So on Tuesday we were up and out of the hostel by 4am to meet up with our tour group for our 1st day on the famous Inca Trail. Just to give you some background, The Inca Trail is by far the most famous trek in South America and is rated by many to be in the top 5 treks in the world. In 27 miles (approx 43km) it manages to combine beautiful mountain scenery, lush cloud-forest, subtropical jungle and, of course, a stunning mix of Inca paving stones, ruins and tunnels. It is a 4 day trek high up into the mountains, starting at km82 in Cusco, passing the Inca ruins of Llactapata, Runkurakay, Sayacmarca, Phuyupatamarca and Wiñay Wayna before finally arriving at Machu Picchu, the mysterious "Lost City of the Incas", for sunrise ... read more

The 15 hour overnight bus from Nazca went smoothly and we slept for most of it despite the windy route which went up and around the mountains (at one point we were literally on the cliff edge) climbing to the city of Cusco which is 3600m above sea level, our highest town yet. Just prior to getting on the bus in Nazca, Scott got out of the taxi, (Well i will call it a taxi but it was more like a 1990's, 17 year olds first Renault which had been lowered to show off the illuminous lights underneath-think xmas tree decorations, complete with a rear spoiler, which was really just a random chunk of metal and ridiculous pieces of aluminum stuck all over acting as mud guards.) at the bus station and ripped his trousers on ... read more

South America » Peru » Ica » Nazca » Nazca Lines September 11th 2010

***Sorry guys few days behind with blog due to no internet connection, but should be fully up to date over the weekend, Including Cusco and the Inka Trail . . . Anyway onto Nazca *** After a great couple of days sandboarding and chilling in Huacachina we headed to Nazca about 2 1/2 hours away, mainly to see the famous Nazca Lines. The Nazca lines are engravings of various animals/shapes including a dog, a monkey, a triangle, a condor and a spider. The lines have have been etched into the ground and can only be seen from the air, so we took a small jet plane over the lines to view them properly. No one knows how they got there or when. The plane was tiny with only 4 passengers, the pilot and a guide to ... read more

South America » Peru » Ica » Huacachina September 10th 2010

We arrived in Ica, direct from Paracas at around 1pm and hopped straight into a taxi for the short ride, not knowing what to expect of either Huacachina or the sand dunes which this little town is famous for. The town itself has a great travellers vibe and is set around an idylic lagoon with a handful of local restaurants and hostels. It has only been established in the last 5 - 10 years and was bourne as a direct result of the huge sand dunes and the fact you can sand board and buggy ride over them. We both hope it remains natural and undeveloped, although not convinced it will be the same place in another 10 years time. The temperature was considerably hotter than Lima and after a quick explore of our new surroundings, ... read more

South America » Peru » Ica » Ballestas Islands September 9th 2010

So . . . Today we had a trip planned to Paracas to see the famous Ballestas Islands which are renowned for their wildlife and can only be visited by boat. We had an early morning bus to catch from Lima to Paracas-Isla Ballestas at 4am which meant us only getting a few hours sleep in our hostel reception before our 3am pick. The bus journey headed south down the coast and was probably the most comfortable bus ride ever with big, reclining seats which pretty much went into beds. All tours start at 8am and as we were running a little late on the bus, we only just made it with our tour guide trying to make us run with our oversized bags to the pier. The speed boat was FREEZZZZZZZZING - The first site ... read more

South America » Peru » Lima » Lima » Miraflores September 9th 2010

This is going to be fairly long as we are starting from the beginning back in the UK... So we arrived and checked in for our London-Miami flight at Heathrow on Monday morning fine, and took off on time. The BA plane was comfortable, there were good films showing, and we were really excited about starting our rtw trip. 9 1/2 hours went by pretty quickly and luckily managed to sleep for some of it, so we arrived in Miami feeling surprisingly fresh and went to check in for our Miami-Lima flight, which was in 3 hours time and another 5 1/2 hours. After some typically large American pizza portions we boarded the flight to Lima and promptly fell asleep for most of it, landing at 9pm in Lima, 3am in London, almost 24hrs after we ... read more
