Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Hamilton October 17th 2010

We had decided to stay in Hamilton for a couple of reasons - firstly, it was very close to the towns of Rotorura and Lake Taupo and also the Waitomo caves (all of which we intended to visit) and secondly, we had heard there was a reasonable about of nightlife and as it was a Saturday and it had been a while since we had been out we decided to head for there. The drive down from the Coromandel was pretty uneventful although once again the scenery was great. We arrived into Hamilton at around 6 and immediately saw it was quite a lively town when we passed a large pub, which was holding it’s annual Oktoberfest (German beer festival) as well as several other bars/clubs and nice looking restaurants. We managed to find a private, ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Coromandel Peninsula October 16th 2010

Continuing on from our previous blog, after driving back through Auckland we had decided to head east and then back up the coast to a region called the Coromandel Peninsula. Looking at a map of the north island of NZ, this is the part which slightly bends away from the main land area and there is a very scenic ring road (freeway 25) which follows the coastline in a huge loop passing through various town - In a way, similar to it’s UK namesake ‘M25’ but with the added bonus of no traffic, beautiful forest on one side and crashing waves against sandy beaches or rugged cliffs on the other (so in actual fact, nothing like it at all). Our initial plan was to make our way to the starting point of this loop, Thames and ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Bay of Islands » Paihia October 15th 2010

Once we had done our food shop and (successfully) got petrol, we headed up north about 4 hours from Auckland to an area called The Bay of Islands (BOI) and the coastal town of Pahia. Scott did the driving and took to it like a duck to water, quickly getting used to driving a large automatic vehicle and overtaking slow drivers, made easier by the fact that in NZ they drive on the left like at home. After getting out of the city and onto the quieter roads we soon saw that the country actually did have more sheep than people! On the way to BOI we passed through a town called Whangerei which looked pretty sweet and they even had a place called Sheep World which was full of bright pink sheep! Very strange. On ... read more

After a mammoth 13 hour flight from Chile on Sunday night (which actually went quite quickly as it was through the night so we slept a lot) we arrived in chilly Auckland, New Zealand, on Tuesday morning, losing a day of our lives due to the time difference! We got a shuttle bus from the airport to the apartments/hotel we had booked, as taxis were ridiculously expensive, but as it was only 5am we couldn’t check in, so we left our bags and went to have a look round Auckland in the dark. Luckily we were based really near the Auckland sky tower, which is the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere, so we popped in to have a look as it was the only place open at that time due to its casino and hotel. ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago October 10th 2010

Our flight from Buenos Aires- Santiago (Chile) in first class went very quickly and it was great to have a couple of hours of pampering, starting with the first class lounge at the airport, followed by a meal on the plane and a film in the flat bed seats! When we arrived in Santiago it was around 5.30pm so we got a taxi to our hostel, which turned out to be one of our favourite hostels we have stayed in so far this trip. Our room was huge with a great hot shower, the staff were really friendly, it was central and it had a swimming pool. We got changed and decided to head out for a nice meal and some drinks for our last night in South America, which we were both pretty sad about. ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires October 8th 2010

Hola from Buenos Aeries, So after arriving at the BA bus terminal after our marathon 17 hour bus ride from Iguazu Falls (seriously, no where near as bad as it sounds) we had decided to treat ourselves and check into a rather nice boutique hotel in the fashionable district of Palermo in Buenos Aeries - It actually had a bath tub (our first since we have been travelling and Scott was very excited about this, it’s amazing how the little things we take for granted can be so pleasing when you have been without them for so long). So after a quick freshen up we decided to explore the area and have a bite to eat as it was now early afternoon - after a fairly pricey burger and chips and a bit of window shopping ... read more

After a morning on Ipanema beach (where Scott finally got to go in the sea - and was knocked over several times by huge waves) we left Rio on Monday afternoon and had a short flight to Foz Do Iguazu on the Brazillian side of the Iguazu falls. After collecting our luggage, we jumpedin a taxi across the border to the Argentine side, Puerto Iguazu, where we would stay for the night before starting our day at the Iguazu falls on Tuesday. We explored the small town and found a fancy Italian restaurant which looked fairly reasonably priced at £4 per pasta dish - However, in Argetina, restaurants charge seperately for the sauce so it ended up being one of our most expensive meals to date (At the grand total of £15 - but worth every ... read more

South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Rio de Janeiro » Ipanema October 1st 2010

After 3 planes and 36 hours we finally arrived in the world famous city, Rio de Janeiro! We left La Paz on the 28th and had an early morning flight to nearby city Santa Cruz, where we spent a few hours in the centre (very hot, humid and not much to do) before a flight to the capital of Paraguay, Asuncion. We then spent the night there (Tam airways put us up in a 5 star hotel with dinner as they changed the flight schedule- was a pain but good to have a few hours of luxury!) before our early morning flight on the 29th to Rio. When we arrived we jumped in a taxi to the hostel we were due to stay in to find they were full, but as it was based in a ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz September 27th 2010

After arriving back in La Paz at 6am after an 11 hour over night journey (from hell- bloody bumpy road) from the salt flats tour, we decided to try and chck in to a different hostel (the Adventure Brew) with an Aussie couple we had met on the tour. As it was so early the hostel said they wouldn't know until lunch time if they had a room so we took advantage of the free breakfast pancakes and used the internet while Scott watched some football. Lunchtime finally came and we were a bit disapopinted with the room they had offered us so we quickly hopped accross town to see if the Loki (where we stayed before) had a double room for us, luckily they had a room available so after checking out of the AB ... read more
