After leaving Lake Tekapo headed south, decided to stop at Omarama for one night. Not really much in the way of a town but found some interesting clay cliffs about twenty minutes drive from the centre. The road from the highway turns to an unsealed road after about 4kms, I have found them difficult to get used to as they are really bumpy and dusty but when in Rome etc. after about another 4kms the road is only fit for 4WD so walked the rest of the way. Couldn't find much information about the cliffs but looking at them it would appear clay between the sandstone is eroded and leaves the sandstone which looks a bit like the sandcastles you make with wet sand. Following at his took the mountain rothe towards Wanaka stopping off at ... read more

After leaving Moeraki I travelles to Twizel which is a small town on a lake about an hours drive from Mt Cook. It is a fair sized lake and they were holding rowing trials on it the day I arrived apparently a regatta is due this weekend. Following day I visited Mt Cook and all it's glory, in the information centre they had some photos of people climbing at the beginning of the century it's unbelievable he hat they climber in, in those days. Needless to say the mountain every in the hot summer we are having is still snow capped which makes for some nice photos. The lake as you approach Mt Cook is the most amazing colour of blue I think caused by the minerals in the water. Spent most of the day walking ... read more

Arrived in Moeraki after leaving Dunedin. The train station in Dunedin is great as the entrance hall has been pretty much preserved as it was when it was built. It's all glazed tiles and mosaics floors, which has been well looked after. The exterior of the building looks good too. Apparently they have a fashion show in Dunedin where the models walk the length of the train station using it as a cat walk and people sit in the train which is parked in the station, bit different wonder if it will catch on in London???? Also visited the Botanical gardens which were really well looked after although a bit past theie best seasonally. Made my way to the Octagon, the centre of Dunedin to sample a delicious pizza sitting in the sun with glass of ... read more

Woke up this morning to hear the pitter patter of rain!!!! I had already booked to go to Stewart Island so despite the rain and the fact it was really cold I set off to Bluff just outside Invercargill to catch the ferry to Stewart Island. The journey takes about an hour and it was quite rough on the way there. One or two people looked a bit pale but it was ok. Arrived at Stewart Island still raining, but every now and then it would stop so I managed a feshort walks in between the showers. Decided to take the bus tour as it seemed a better option than getting soaked and cold all day. The driver was very informative and told us that there are four hundred full time resident on the island which ... read more

After a day sitting on the coach yesterday I thought I should get some excercise, so today after a good breakfast I decided to take the gondola to the top of the mountain opposite where I am staying. At the top you can watch people hurling themselves off the bungy I might be a bit adventurous but not quite that mad, although I have to say it was fun watching. After a large brownie and a pot of Earl Grey thought I had better head down so decided to walk back!!! The lady in the information kiosk told me that you could indeed do this and told me where to pick up the trail. On my way down people were whizzing past on the zip wire, but as I had done all that before I just ... read more

Arrived in Queenstown, picked up the hire car and headed into town. It was Waitangi Day a national holiday and the cloud gradually cleared from the lake and presented us with a beautiful warm day. The town is on the edge of a huge lsmall the town is compact so it's easy to get around but I believe this is the Mecca for the adrenalin junkies so I don't really know what I am doing here!!!! Plenty to do, bungy, jet boats, zip wires, paragliding, skydiving the list goes on,actually when I think about it I have done some of these things so perhaps I am in the right place. Decided to book a trip to Milford Sound as its a fairly long journey and driving would have been quite tiring and expensive in fuel. The ... read more

Heading for Wellington and my return flight to Christchurch I followed the East Coast stopped at Napier for one night, an Art Deco?? Town with black sand, sorry folks but it just doesn't hit the spot for me. Next stop was Upper Hutt about a thirty minute drive to Wellington. Did some walking here managed to force myself over a narrow swing bridge to do a walk up to the dam, well worth it. Next day took a ferry across the harbour from Days Bay to Wellington to observe the festivities of the Seven tournament, not quite sure how much of it was to do withRugby. Everyone visiting the tournament goes in fancy dress, great fun, needless to say accompanied by lots of booze and jumping off the wharf into the sea. In the morning I ... read more

Had to be done, lovely magical Maketu, just had to go back again, it's not the most beautiful beach I have seen but the whole place has such a great atmosphere, it's like something from the sixties, everything is very laid back, relaxed and frankly wonderful. It's difficult to explain really but the place just has a really lovely feel to it. Only managed to stay for one night but my cabin was right on the beach, so was able to lie on the bed listen to the sea and watch the sun go down and the full moon rise. Just a perfect evening. Bliss. Next day on the road to Ohope a much bigger town than I was expecting but nice, a harbour and lovely beach. from there headed towards Gisborne once again a biggish ... read more

Left the Bay of Islands on Thursday and headed to Whangerai which is a NZ city, quite busy after the quiet life of Northland. Headed out to Tutukaka as I didn't want to stay in town other than for shopping and an ATM. Tutukaka was a small inlet which was pretty full of expensive yachts And dive schools. Ventured on to Matapouroi which was quite a decent sized bay with enough surf for bodyboarding but near the river people were using paddle boards. The weather has been quite hot and last night it was a bit humid the result of some nice little mozzie was about twenty bites on my face and around my eyes so look as if someone has punched me at the moment, lovely. Drove to Orewa Friday heading further south, nice beach ... read more

Arrived here a couple of stays a ago, found a lovely campsite just outside Pahia which is situated near the river, a lovely situation. The first day I visited the Waitangi treaty grounds where the treaty was signed between the Maoris and The Europeans hopefully to the benefit of both communities. A celebration is held here every year on the 6th February and the Maoris come in their waka's (traditional canoes) which are quite something to see. made from massive kauri trees and hollowed out to make the canoe. Apparently before the trees are felled they strip the bark from one side so that it begins to decay and makes it easier to hollow out. The canoes are huge and can carry the rowers, food and family. The treaty house has been made in to a ... read more
