Today I enjoyed beautiful orchids, visited the jungle, the desert, Hawaii and looked at medicinal plants, all for free in the Botanical Gardens in Washington DC. I think it's great that all their museums are free, what a great way to get people in and educate them, even the less privileged and families can do it when it's free. Well done Washington!! The orchids were beautiful all shapes, sizes and colours. This was followed by a brisk walk asthe temperature has dropped to about 55 and it feels a bit like the UK, not liking that too much, never mind. Next stop was a sculpture garden which I found when looking for a warm drink, all sorts of cubic stuff but the one that stood out was a stainless steel tree which had obviously fooled one ... read more

Decided to fly to Washington from Boston as it was a ten hours on the bus, eight hours on the train and one and a half hours to fly plus it was only ten pounds dearer than the train!!!!! Place where I am staying is very nice it's a huge bedroom and a huge bathroom with a jacuzzi bath in the basement. The first day I was here it was really hot about 80degrees and quite humid. Saturday I did the usual sights White House etc, then went to the Holocaust Museum in the afternoon. It was very emotional and moving but very well worth a visit. In one areas you can listen to people who survived telling their stories, some had lost their entire families, very sad. Today I visited the American Indian museum, the ... read more

The place I have been staying at is called a co-housing unit. The people who live there are acommunity's who help each other and maintain the premises as much as they can without outside help. They each donate four hours a week to do something around the place, I.e. gardening, cleaning etc. There is a committee who organise things and there are communal areas where you can do yoga or work out at the gym they have. They also have guest roomswhere's guests can stay for a small fee. They are very supportive of each other and do not have any rules about who can live there. It had a really good feel, the people were friendly and everyone looked out for each other. The guy I stayed with was a community artist and worked with ... read more

Have arrived in Boston, after a three house journey by bus from Brattleboro. I eventually got the hang of the T (subway) and found my way to the new accommodation. Another lady called Eileen from Co. Cork I. Eire is also staying here. We ventured out in the evening and found an excellent Thai restaurant. The following day I took a trip out to Spectacle island, so called because there are two small islands joined in the middle which resemble a pair of specs. The space between the islands has been built up over a period of time. I took a walk around the island which takes about an hour,it was a nice way to see some of the islands and the harbour. I imagine it would be really nice to picnic there in the summer. ... read more

My very first garlic festival, today with my host Rebecca we travelled to Orange where there was a garlic festival which celebrates an amazing number of different garlics and many other healthy options. There were many different crafts, home grown vegetables some of which I hadn't seen before, local hand dyed wool, music food and dancing. It was well attended and the atmosphere was great. The trees are now starting to change to their autumn colours which are vibrant. It has been a comfortable and relaxing stay and Rebecca is a great person and very kind she couldn't have made me more welcome. Next leg, off to Bosotn tomorrow.... read more

Arrived in Brattleboro on Amtrak trains from New York, it's the equivalent of a little English market town with the Connecticut river nearby. Very quiet and sleepy just what you need after New York. Walked round the town yesterday they have some great shops here mostly arty. There one shop called Beadnicks which is just amazing whether or not you are interested in making things from beads the display alone is well worth a visit. Every colour you could possibly think of and every shape and size, from minute to huge wooden beads. It's GREAT and the guy in their was really nice. There was another art shop/gallery which had several different artists work. Some great photographs and amazing wood carvings, one of a horses head carved from maple wood and the grain in the wood ... read more

Leaving New York today heading toVermont, weather fine, trying to type on train is a bit difficult thank goodness for predictive text. Yesterday visited the Guggenheim Museum, which was a bit disappointing as the ramps were being prepared for a Picasso exhibition in black and white. However there were some great exhibits, Monet, Degas, Picasso and some great photos. This was followed by a stroll in Central Park, it was a warm September afternoon and the park was very busy. It al happens in Central Park, I did some traditional Greekdancing, watched a guy blow enormous balloons, listened to a drum band they were really good, watchedroller skating dancers, there was volleyball, people running, biking walking, riding in carriages. Saw advertising in the sky something to do with jobs, letters created in the vapour trail. Wow!!!!! ... read more

this is one crazy place, today I viewed the city from the Empire State building, the wall cladding is marble and just amazing. Did an uptown bus trip Harlem etc then back to Times Square which was heaving, and so, so, so, busy. Found solace in Bryant Park behind New York library. As I walked back I found free concert in Madison Square garden, musicians playing in a triangle about ten feet across with traffic whiz zing by and people sitting listening. At Union Square park a local farmers market and loads of people playing chess!!!! Whew!!!Fetter aching like mad!!... read more
