Had to get up at 4am for this but it was definitely worth it, absolutely majestic, tranquil and beautiful, this is the America I wanted to see. The guide told us that it generally takes climbers two days to scale the wall of El Capitan or as the Native Americans call it To-to-kan oo lah which I think sounds much nicer. You could just imagine a Native American on his horse with his bow and arrow looking down at the valley beneath. Simply beautiful!! The only down side was that the waterfalls were a mere trickle as the rainfall has been so low in the area this year. Shame but thats life. Going back to San Francisco sure you will like the photo of Golden Gate bridge!!! In the fog!!! Hmmm a tad disappointing but am ... read more

Early rise at 5.45am yawn yawn eventually left LA at 9.15am as the coach got caught up in heavy traffic. First stop for lunch was at supposedly Danish town of Solvang?? Will check with my sons partner to see if it's authentic and looks anything like Danish architecture, quite charming either way. Next stop a place called Hearst Castle built around 1900 by a millionaire who owned several newspapers. Apparently all the rich famous and interesting people were invited, Charlie Chaplin, David Niven etc. The house was on top of a hill overlooking the ocean so the views were great. For the first time in my life I witnessed the whole of the sea covered in a blanket of mist it looked interesting unite interesting but when you have visited places like Chatsworth nothing compares I'm ... read more

Have caught up on sleep after the sixty hour train trip, we passed near to the Mexican border where the housing was very different to the Eatsern side of the USA. it seems very run down more like trailers rather than houses, not really sure what you would do for a job in that sort of environment. Mining maybe?? I guess you can see why the Mexican people want to get over the border for a better standard of living. Arrived in LA at Union station, rather a grand place with marble floors and ornate walls, it's nice that they have kept the historic architecture, there are big sort of leather armchairs joined together in a row of about four really comfy for a weary traveller. Also there are quiet garden areas where you can sit, ... read more

Left St Louis on Tuesday, it rained really hard in the morning so I didn't go out as didn't want to get soaked before the journey. Monday was thunder and lightening and rained intermittently so managed to get my new camera sorted out. Caught the train at 8pm on Tuesday and arrived in LA at 4.30aM on Friday. Most of the journey was across Texas which is a huge state, most of it is either flat agricultural land or desert. it took two day to get through Texas alone unfortunately there was no wifi on the train so couldn't update the blog before today. Arrived in LA this morning. But have been through three time zones in as many days so not quite sure what time it is!!! From what I have seen of LA I ... read more

Arrived yesterday after leaving Memphis, the countryside around Memphis is very flat and rural for about two hundred miles north, then it becomes a little more undulating. Arrived in St Louis about six pm weather was beautiful. Am staying with a couple, Rachel is a doctor and Todd an attorney, haven't met Todd yet but Rachel is lovely. The area is really nice with great eating places and a really beautiful park. Today I spent the day walking in the park, the weather was really warm around seventy five degrees. The park was lovely with all the autumn colours in the trees, every so often there was an open building with benches inside and people were having BBQs, children's parties of just family gatherings, it had a really lovely atmosphere. Sorry no pics at the moment ... read more

Well had to be done, and boy did I enjoy it, the best museum I have been to GRACELAND. I loved it. You forget as time goes by what great music he sang, some you don't hear for years and you hear them again and they sound so fresh and alive. I can't believe so many people still go after thirty five years. The guide said that thefamily only own 15% of the business now and they still make around 8million every year. The personal items still belong to the family. I was transported back to my teenage years, I loved the music and still do. the house has been pretty much preserved as far as you can tell and does look very 70's. There are commentaries from his ex-wife and there are original photos still ... read more

Left Roanoke yesterday by bus en route for Memphis, weather has been great until last night just after we left Nashville the driver informed us that he had been told by drivers returning to Nashville from Memphis that there were some pretty hefty storms coming up he wasn't wrong. Having said that it was the lightning that woke me up and then I noticed it was raining pretty heavily too. There was this guy on the bus who said night, night to everyone, then this young guy who sat across the aisle from me said "good night John boy" and i just fell about. Thought I arrived in Memphis at 7.30 but hadn't accounted for the central time zone so it was actually 6.30am. The place I am staying is about two miles from Graceland so ... read more

Well what can I say about Roanoke, errrrmmmmmm!!!!!! Not a lot really, the journey here was lovely about two and a half hours from Charlottesville, the trees are lovely at the moment, vibrant yellows, oranges, greens and deep reds. We passed by well manicured lawns with ornamental ponds, with a backdrop of rolling hills covered in autumn colours and behind that the blue ridge mountains. Paddocks with either horses or cows, neither of which I fancied riding thank you Mrs Player? ha ha can you see me on a horse!!! Wouldn't know which shoes to wear for that!!! People seem to use their front porches quite a lot here maybe we should adopt them in the UK then perhaps neighbours would actually speak to each other. The one good thing that they had in Roanoke at the ... read more

Arrived in Charlottesville the same day as the Dali Lama, I always keep good company, ha ha, there is stone block in the pedestrian area where you write messages about also almost anything. when I arrived there were greetings for the Dali Lama written, haven't seen much graffiti so I suppose it works!!! The area has quite a few vineyards and ranches with white painted fences and horses in the paddocks. The only downside is that once you are here getting around outside of the town without a car is hopeless, however this hasn't stopped me enjoying myself. Have found a lovely place to eat called Baggbys they do GREAT soup I have tried the cheesy potato and the clam chowder. YUM YUM!! Have walked along the river, been to the cinema and sat in the ... read more

Left Washington DC and arrived in Charlottesville the same day as the Dali Lama. He was giving a talk in the town, unfortunately our bus was delayed and we didn't arrive until the speech was half way through. couldn't get a ticket but did listen to some of it from a bridge above the site however there was traffic going over the bridge so it was difficult to hear it. Charlottesville is a delightful little town, it has a very cosmopolitan feel, laid back and relaxed. have already found a great restaurant, the theatre and a concert hall. There was a country band playing in the street when I arrived and coupled with a beautiful day it was very enjoyable. Tha lady I am staying with is very musical and she plays several instruments, cello, violin, ... read more
