Decided to take the bus and walk from Bondi Beach to Coogee Beach. Have nice big breakfast and off I trotted. Arrived at Bondi Beach where there were plenty of surfers despite being quite cool. There were also some swimmers in the open air swimming pool at the side of the beach. Walked the cliff path first to Bronte, Clovelly and finally Coogee. Walk takes about an hour and a half but kept stopping to take photos ect. Caught the bus back from Coogee to Circular Quay, indulged in fish and chips on the quay and then stayed to watch the light show which is called Vivid. I it started at six o clock by six thirty you could barely move I should think the whole of Sydney was there. The lights on the bridge were ... read more

Am back in Sydney for a while to sort out visas which I have to say has been a little stressful. Have succeeded in obtaining the Vietnamese one and waiting on the Thai one at present. In the meantime I am staying south of Sydney in a little place called Chiffley. There are three beaches nearby two of which I have visited already. I really wanted to go and see something at the Opera House while I was here but there was nothing much on when I was here initially. Anyway went and had a look and have booked to see a contemporary dance company on Tuesday Evening. Today I visited the modern Art Gallery which had an exhibition of Photographs on, quite interesting. Also at circular quay today was one of the big liners it ... read more

Arrived in Alice springs after an eight and a half bus trip from Coober Pedy. Lots of sand, bush and not a lot else. After checking in to the accommodation I booked to go on the rock tour. Three days in the bush. First day consisted of an early start and a long drive to Kings Canyon where we walked the rim. 3.5km. The first leg of the walk was called heart attack hill, three hundred plus of very uneven steps to the top of the canyon. There was much huffing and puffing not only by me but also the twenty something's. the walk around the rim of the canyon was more like rock walking, the rocks very crumbly as they were sandstone and loads of stepping which was really hard work as it was twenty ... read more

After leaving Adelaide I spent eleven hours on the Greyhound Bus before arriving at Coober Pedy at 5am. I did manage to sleep quite well actually the bus wasn't full so you could stretch out a bit. Coober Pedy is an old mining town and most of its inhabitants live underground in the old opal mines. The temperature remains pretty much constant at 25degrees. martin greeted us at the bus stop and delivered us safely to our accommodation, which consisted of a small dorm with two bunk beds off the main corridor of the mine. No door or privacy good job it wasn't very full, ha ha. We were about two floors beneath the surface and considering I don't like caves it wasn't too bad, quite fun really, never slept in a mine before. Makes you ... read more

Spent the last five days discovering Adelaide. I am staying in Glenelg which is a suburb of Adelaide with a couple Hans and Gerda who came originally from Switzerland but have lived in Australia for about thirty years. Explored the city by catching the local tram, very easy from where I am staying. Adelaide is not a huge city and is very easy to get around. Some of the Victorian architecture has been preserved and adds to the charm of a green tree filled city. I visited Adelaide Arcade which is a beautifully preserved Victorian shopping arcade complete with original tiled floor. Also visited the Tandanya Aboriginal art gallery which was interesting. Walked along the beach to Glenelg town and in the opposite direction to a place called Seacliff. Today Gerda took me to Halletts Cove ... read more

Today decided to visit the Ballarine Peninsula as I had one day left of the car hire before I left for Adelaide. The drive took about an hour and twenty minutes. Visited both Queenscliff and Portarlington, both very nice little sleepy seaside towns. I had thought about going on the ferry to Mornington Peninsula but by the time I got there it didn't leave enough time as the ferry only goes once an hour and takes about forty minutes and I didn't really have time for that so visited Portarlington instead. The weather was warm and sunny, bliss. Nice way to spend a lazy Sunday.... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Halls Gap May 17th 2013

After leaving Warrambool, set my GPS for Halls Gap, decided to take the fastest route as it was going to be a two hour drive. Well it was an incredibly straight road, so I couldn't grumble about that and it obviously ran parallel to the main road but the surface!!!! Was awful in places and at times it went down to one lane of bumpy, rough tarmac. The good thing was I think I was the only person on this road!!! Eventually got to the Grampians and Halls Gap the weather was awful just torrential rain so I decided to head for the Motel in the end and try again tomorrow. Tomorrow came and hurray it was dry, still cloudy and grey but dry. Took the Horsham road up into the mountains to look for Mackenzie ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Otway Ranges May 15th 2013

The title says it all, I must have picked the absolute worst time to drive the Ocean Road, it has been almost non stop torrential rain, freezing cold a top temp of about 10degrees with a wind chill factor bringing that down to just above freezing. Add to this high winds and heavy seas, do you get the picture, sounds like home doesn't it. The plus side was that I endured it all, the roads to my surprise weren't flooded and I arrived safely in Worranbool unscathed. After leaving Pollo Bay I went to Otway Point, it was raining but not too heavily at this point. The road to the lighthouse was about five or six miles and this area is renowned for koala bears. I saw some people had stopped and were looking up into ... read more

Woke up this morning and the weather had improved and although cold, yes, cold it was at least dry. Decided to go to the information centre who told me the coastal path was just over there!!! pointing to the beach!!! Very helpful!!! Walked along the beach and the pathway on to the next beach still no sign of the coastal path, so decided to go to the Otway National Park. I looked at the map and could see there were two possible routes making a circular drive. So off I trot heading away from the Ocean road up into the hills. Turn left said the GPS which I duly did into something called Torrents Track, it didn't look much like a road but I thought well that's what the GPS said!! Well the road turned into ... read more

Second day of the Gt Ocean Road, ate a hearty breakfast and set off to Bells Beach where they hold the Ripcurl Pro surf championships apparently!! Must be true there were some pretty amazing waves there, you could see them forming quite a way out to sea. It was quite warm and the sun was shining. I watched some surfing some of them were really good going over the top of the waves and then back in front, very clever and what's more they all looked very fit, well have to have some excuse for ogling them I suppose. Next stop was Anglesea did not look much like the Anglesey in Wales but the weather was about right. By the time I got to Aireys Inlet it had just started to rain. I walked up to ... read more
