Today I decided to explore the South Bank, Brisbane. In 1988 the EXPO exhibition was held on this site. Today there are a few relics from that time also some refurbishment of the area which took place after the exhibition. The South Bank is where most of the cultural centres lie, Queensland Performing Arts Centre, The Lyric and other theatres etc. As you cross Victoria Bridge from CBD there is a parkland area which stretches along the side of the river. As you begin the walk past the theatres the first thing you see is the Ferris Wheel, not sure if this was there during the EXPO exhibition or whether it was a later addition. Further along are cafes, a concert hall, pleasant walks through a small rainforest area and pathways with metals structures supporting bougainvillea ... read more

Arrived in Brisbane to much cooler temperatures a mere 26 compared to 33-36degrees in Cairns and humidity of 90%. The place I am staying is very nice with a decent sized swimming pool which is great. Caught the bus into the centre of the city yesterday. The city is on a river which runs pretty much through the centre. I visited the city centre but it was very busy and decided to go to a concert by the Queensland SO which included circus performances and classical music. brilliant!! The South bank is the cultural area with a big wheel a bit like the London Eye. Didn't get much time to explore this but will probably go back tomorrow.... read more

Decided to spend the last day of my stay in Cairns at Kuranda. The first stop was the aboriginal village of Djapukai where we were entertained by dancers acting out stories from dreamtime, their story telling history which is sacred to them. This was followed by a dance theatres and music, which included making fire from rubbing sticks. Afterwards we had a talk on herbal medicines which are still used today although some of the fruits and berries are toxic until treated. That was really interesting. We were showed how spears and shields were used in the past and now for hunting. Following on we swerve showed how to throw spears and boomerangs. I tried the boomerang throwing and first couple of throws were rubbish but the third one came spinning back to me. Result!! After ... read more

Well the big day arrived and I was very excited, off to the Great Barrier Reef. The weather had been hot and sunny for three or four days with no rain and the day I went out was pretty much perfect. The sea was calm the sun was hot and not too much wind. The first stop was to be Michaelmas Cay which has been formed from coral and sand, it is part of the middle reef. We had to wear stinger suits as its still stinger season these consist of head to toe suit which includes a hood. By the time you have this on, your mask snorkel and fins there is not much of your body showing. The water was warm and the fish were plentiful I decided to enjoy the experience rather than ... read more

Today I visited the rainforest at Daintree which is about a two hour drive from Cairns. En-route our driver Lisa pointed out a roundabout on the duel carriageway. She said that a couple of years ago when they had quite bad floods the road flooded quite badly. The water was quite deep but everyone continued to drive through in good Aussie fashion. When the water subsided there left on the roundabout was a fifteen foot crocodile!!!! Good job no one broke down!!! First stop was tea near the Daintree river where they actually grow the tea, a very nice tea it was too. This was followed by a river trip looking for crocodiles. Apparently there are some quite big ones however we didn't see those only a very small one on the river bank. The guy ... read more

Today it stopped raining!!!! And as I am staying quite near to the Botanical Gardens I thought that I would see what they had to offer. Well it didn't disappoint, there were some interesting plants in the Aboriginal gardens, some lovely foliage and very unusual flowers. Also they have an art gallery and events centre which were originally storage tanks, so they are round with some metal structures in them but that's about all and they are used for concerts and all sorts of things really good inventive architecture. Cool. Spent the afternoon in the centre of Cairns where a concert was held, free of charge and provided by the local council. There is a manmade lagoon on the sea from for people to use instead of the sea as it is stinger season in the ... read more

Well folks arrived in Cairns a couple of days ago, got a taxi from the airport to my accommodation which is a ten minute bus ride to the centre of town. The first day it was a full on tropical storm, the rain was relentless so just got on the bike and cycled into town and although soaking wet for the whole day it was warn rain so it didn't really matter too much. Wondered around the town to get my bearings, found a man made lagoon for swimming, all the shops and information centres etc. rode back along the sea front and got wet again. Day two guess what raining again, decided to catch the bus into town rather than get soaked again. Decided as it was raining I may as well get wet so ... read more

Got up early this morning to catch the 8.20am train to Katooomba, the journey took around two hours. I decided to take the hop on hop off bus as I couldn't find an information centre in the town. Firstly I took sky train across the gorge. In the middle of the sky train you can stand on a glass platform and see right down in to the gorge. It was a very long way down. On arrival at the station there was a one hour queue for the trip down in to the rain forest via a cable car. Teas sounded a more favourable option so went back a bit later when it was a bit quieter. Unfortunately some of the walks were closed as they were carrying out come work on the scenic railway and ... read more

Decided to visit Sydney Zoo today as I am not sure how many of their animals I might see in the wild so thought I ought to take a look. Don't think I have been to a zoo for about twenty years. Walked across the bridge and started talking to a girl who had lived here for ten years. She was from China originally but elect because of the pollution and the weather. She taught IT at the college. We had a discussion on the English monarchy, the weather in the UK, the fact that she wanted more time to do the things she wanted, and what I would be doing on my travels. She said she had never been out of Sydney. Arrived at the ferry in the overseas dock was the Cunard liner the ... read more

And now for something completely different, I wasn't really quite sure what to do today so I went to the Rocks to get some information about the train to the Blue Mountains. I visited the museum there and walked along the old cobbled streets where the early settlers of Sydney lived. A lot of the houses were demolished when they built the bridge in the 1930's but a few remain. at the weekend there is a market and to be honest it is so busy you don't notice the old buildings so it was good to see it when it was a little quieter. After this I wondered through the city and to be honest half an hour was enough for me as I am not really a city person. There were all the designer shops ... read more
