Today we left the small town on the river Mekong and headed for Luang Prabang. At seven am the children from the village were waiting eagerly to take the bags to the jetty, some of them looked very young but our guide assured us that is what they do and that they would be offended if we didn't let them take our bags. We meandered down the river which looks quite treacherous in places with large rocks jutting skywards and swift rapids in places. The weather was extremely hot and even with the breeze from the boat moving along we were all still baking. Lunch was cooked for us on the boat by the boat owners wife, in true Laos style and was delicious. In the afternoon we visited some caves where Buddha's have been brought ... read more

Today has been best day of the trip so far, we joined the boat after breakfast and began our journey down the Mekong. The weather was hot but accompanied by the breeze from the moving vessel made life very comfortable. The beautiful scenery slipped slowly by amid a sea of tranquility. We watched the village inhabitants fishing from their long boats, pulling up their nets or casting them. We were served a magnificent Laos meal, which started with curry soup, followed by a main course which consisted of various chicken dishes and stir fried vegetables, dessert consisted of fresh pineapple. During the afternoon we visited a local hill tribe, a very small basic village, most of them were farmers the houses were simple wooden huts on stilts. Most of the village were there as they had ... read more

TodayToday we left Chiang Mai and headed off in a mini bus for Chiang Rai. The journey took around four hours, but we stopped on the way at a farm shop to sample and buy dried fruits. There was a great selection strawberries, pineapple, coconut, mango and various sorts of nuts with different coatings. When we stopped at Chiang Rai we visited a modern day temple which had been designed by a Thai sculptor. It was all white and mirrored glass and there was only one gold ornamental pice which was reminiscent of the old temples. On some of the canopies people could pay a fee to the temple write a message on a charm and the monks would say a prayer for good karma. There were thousands see in the pictures. The temple was surreal depicting hands ... read more

After leaving the hustle and bustle of Bangkok at 6pm we jumped on the train to Chiang Mai. The journey took fifteen and a half hours but the journey was good. As we left Bangkok we noticed some what I can only describe as huts very near to the train ones, inside the hut was a guy watching TV the train must have a passed within sis feet of where he was sitting. At about 9pm the stewards came round and pulled down the bed and put on the bed sheets etc, all very efficient. I had a good nights sleep despite waking a couple of times. We arrived in Chiang Mai around 9.30am, we dropped off our cases at the hotel and went to explore the town and the temples. Stopped off for lunch and ... read more

Today I decided to have a culinary tour of the street restaurants, first thing I purchased was fresh pineapple and melon all neatly cut into chunks and ready for eating with a stick. For lunch I bought what I though was fish on a stick that turned out to be a chicken wing!!! Next well I am not really sure what they were, they didn't really taste of much except incredibly hot sauce and were a bit grisly to eat, don't think I will buy those again. Then on to what looked like little pancakes when cooked these tasted like the wafers you have with ice cream They fold them over and it looked like marshmallow in the middle that was gooey and then sprinkled yellow coconut on top. Very sweet and Yummy. This evening I ... read more

Today I visited The Grand Palace, Bangkok. Everyone said go early, so I did, wrong much quieter by the time I left around lunchtime???. On entering the Palace you can barely see anything for the amount of people there, this was on a Friday morning so not the weekend, there were just hoards. Decided to walk around the galleries where the walls are painted with scenes from Ramakien. The paintings depict the story of different stages of war, the rescuing of Sita, the building of a causeway to the mainland, and finally the death of Thotsakan. Some of the walls have been refurbished in recent years so not aloriginally but very intricate. Wat Phra Kaew holds the emerald Buddha, which is made from emerald but from jade. When it was fund originally it was covered is ... read more

Had a busy and very hot day yesterday, so feeling a little tired today, spent the morning catching up with a few things I needed to get sorted for the trip, doing a little shopping and then decided to try and get some air as the traffic is awful in Bangkok. There is a park over the main road from where I am staying so thought this might be a good idea as trees produce oxygen and cars destroy it. I thought I'll take my book and have a read in tranquil surroundings by the lake, I was about to sit down and noticed a tail in the grass, oh boy am I glad I didn't sit down there was a huge lizard sitting under the bench where I was going to sit. Decided to carry ... read more

Yesterday had planned to visit the Grand Palace, however got to Wat Pho first so slight change of plan. The day started I with a short trip on the BTS Skyrail which is a great way of getting around Bangkok, quick easy and cheap you avoid all the traffic. Arrived at Sachan Taksin which is the stop which gets you to the Chao Phraya river. Walked under the bridge and on to the jetty which was very wobbly, haven't got my sea legs yet!! A small boat came along the river, which was at a much lower level than the jetty so am guessing must be tidal. Consequently it was a bit of a scramble to get into the boat, no steps or anything, well this is Thailand!!!!! And the water was a choppy!! Once in ... read more

Arrived safely in Bangkok after a tiring ten hour flight from Sydney, although there is always entertainment when you are awake the time always seems to drag. Much prefer a night flight where you can get your head down. Watch a film, when you wake up, have something to eat and then hey presto you have arrived. Getting through customs was a bit of a nightmare because I had chosen to get a sixty day visa in Sydney they insisted on stamping it rather than giving me a thirty day entry visa which means I now have to go to immigration in Bangkok and sort it out. Fingers crossed. Although I have been to Thailand before I have never stopped off at Bangkok, it's a city that totally bombards the senses. The traffic is horrendous and ... read more

Today visited the entrance to Sydney Harbour near Watsons Bay. Took the ferry from Circular Quay on the way there were three other stops but it was nice just watching the world go by. Watsons Bay looked like a really nice place to go for lunch and there were loads of people eating in restaurants dotted along the promenade, almost on the beach, so a lovely situation. I walked round to Cove beach which was almost empty just a few people going kayaking, then on to the headland and the lighthouse. Just across from the lighthouse is the entrance to Sydney Harbour and some very treacherous rocks. According to the information quite a few ships ran aground on these rocks in the early days, the lighthouse keepers cottages were still there but not open to the ... read more
