We were sad to leave Budapest, but Hvar was a great change from the craziness of traveling over the past few weeks. We flew from Budapest to Split, Croatia on Tuesday morning, then took a ferry to the island of Hvar. Walking into the Split airport (with one backpack filled with wine, as well as one obviously marked "fragile" duffel bag, we walked through customs as if we had nothing to declare. Awesome. As we walked off of the ferry, we were bombarded with people heckling us, asking if we needed a place to stay. Fortunately, we had already booked a room with a lovely Croatian woman named Ivanka Ivanovic (of course). She picked us up at the harbor, and immediately became our Croatian mother, telling us where to go, eat, shop, swim, etc. She ... read more

We are alive! ...we just have not been able to find an internet connection strong enough to upload pictures. So, you will have to roll on descriptions for now. What we learned in Hungary: The best languages to know when traveling are Hungarian (of course) and German. Lucky for us, we know neither. ...and even luckier is the fact that Hungarians don't like signs. Apparently all Hungarians are born knowing which train track they need and the name of all streets. Lets just say, Hungary was an adventure and Budapest is our favorite city so far. The city is divided into two parts, Buda and Pest, by the Danube. Buda is the old portion of the city and is strikingly hilly, with its cliffs rising right out of the river. They have special uphill trollies ... read more

We haven't had much luck with trains... On Monday, we leisurely walked to the train station in Prague, thinking we had plenty of time to make our train. Once we got there, we couldn't find our train on the departures list. Though this seemed strange, we waited for a few minutes before asking the (quite rude) woman at the information desk. It turned out that our train was leaving from a different station, which we, of course, had not even considered. We had fifteen minutes. In panic mode, we ran, packs and all, down to the subway (without a ticket since we were out of Czech currency - thank god a tram cop didn't stop us since we haven't had much luck with them either!), found the other train staion on the stop, and made ... read more

After missing our train in Dresden, we arrived in Prague around 11pm. Our hostel definitely received good reviews based entirely on the location...not the facilities. (since when does a bowl of corn flakes count as "breakfast"?) Despite our initial bad impression, Prague was absolutely magnificent. Over just a few days, we managed to see a lot...and took many pictures, which unfortunately don't do the city justice. We stayed in Stare Mesto, on the east side of the Vltava, and on Saturday we climbed the hill on the other side of the Charles Bridge, which gave us a wonderful panomaric view of the entire city. From there, we walked through the Loreta, the Prague Castle, and winded our way throughout the narrow city streets. Everything is cobblestone and even the sidewalks are made of carefully placed ... read more

Hi everyone, Mollie and I had a fantastic time in Dresden. We were there for just one night, but managed to see some amazing sights and got a good feel for the city. As you can see from the photos, the majority of the buildings in the Old City have been rebuilt, due to the destruction of WWII, only in the last ten years. The Frauenkirche Church, shown below, was just completed in 2005- the darker slabs are actually from the rubble, while the rest is fresh sandstone, which will ultimately age to black as well. We also took a tour of the Semper Opera House, which was magnificent! Fortunately for us, my roommate, Jemi, put us in contact with his awesome friend, Rudi. Therefore, we had our own personal tour guide of the city. ... read more

Berlin has definitely been an experience - as one of the largest cities in Europe, it took some time to get used to the size! Leah and Sean put us in contact with their friend Anika, and we got to stay in her apartment in Kreuzberg all week with her four roommates. Once you get past the size of the city, the neighborhoods are really great. ...and as we have read, Berlin is like New York in the 80s. exactly. haha We have spent the past three days wandering around to memorials and museums and also making time to sit in the cafes and people watch. We spent most of our time in (the former) East Berlin, mainly Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg. The amount of history to absorb in this city is intense. Last night ... read more

Yesterday afternoon Sarah and I arrived in Braunschweig to meet and stay with Leahs ex boyfriend, Sean ...looking quite American in shorts and flipflops. He picked us up at the train station and gave us the tour of his city. Then wanted to give us a taste of a typical night in The Schweig, as he so fondly calls it. We bbqed on his balcony and even though the grill smoke went right into his upstairs neighbors window, the neighbor just popped his head out to see what we were cooking and gave his approval. Apparently everything starts and ends late in Braunschweig. Seans rowdy group of German friends turned up around 11 to hang out before going out for the evening. It was an eclectic group, with constant chatter in English, German, and Spanish. ... read more

Amsterdam Europe » Netherlands » Amsterdam » Amsterdam By Mollie Sarah June 15th 2007 Mollie Sarah Hi everyone! We are now in Amsterdam...flew in yesterday morning and spent most of the day wandering around the city. We took a boat tour of the canals and hid from the rain in some fantastic cafes. Last night we hung out with Peter, our couchsurfing host, who lives in Haarlem, so we got to see another part of the city that is not as tourist-laden. This morning, Mollie and I went to the Van Gogh museum and have been walking around since then. Apparently, no one in Amsterda... read more

We made it! Sarah and I arrived in Reykjavik arond 2am EST ....7am in Iceland. We were totally dazed and confused, running on adrenaline. What we didn't realize is that the International airport is about 45 minutes from the city of Reykjavik and that the area in between is completely uninhabited. Miles and miles of volcanic rock with the only vegetation being mosses and lupine. It was beautiful, unlike anything we have ever seen before. The guesthouse where we stayed for the night was really cute, about a 15 minute walk from the town center. Once we dropped off our bags and found some coffee, we decided the best way to handle our jetlag would be to soak in the blue lagoon. The blue lagoon is a geothermally heated pool about 40 minutes outside of ... read more
